The readings for this module explain a decent amount between mass media and parties/candiates. The University of Organs article in particular explains how the media faces politicians. The readings neglect to address tone and partisan attitudes of mass media regarding politicians.

There are studies finding Republican bias and studies finding Democratic bias. Others find only media bias toward the frontrunner, regardless of party. Dave D’Alessio examines 99 prior studies of presidential election coverage bias and finds no consistent partisan bias.” The article also claims that officials lambastment of the mainstream media has lead to the creation of more biased media sources that cover candidates with more favorable biases.

In the articles that we read this week, I learned just how much social media impacted politics. Being savvy in social media during a camping is a real game changer. Social media is the new way that the public can take a closer look into candidate’s campaigns. People don’t really read the news anymore. It is all bout TV, and the Internet, and all the social media that we can access in one push of a button. This is one statement that didn’t really surprise me, but just supports me; “According to a recent Pew Research Center study, 62 percent of Americans get their news via social media platforms.” Social media is very important to a campaign because any announcement or anything can be shared to millions of people very quickly. One thing that I read in another article that I didn’t see in our articles for this week is how they are getting this information out – sharing. “he White House’s Facebook page has nearly half a million fans; its Twitter feed has 1.7 million followers. That’s no surprise: President Obama was the first candidate to announce his White House run via Web video and his vice presidential pick by text message.” I found this very cool and interesting because it shows how much we have evolved. The idea that the President shares information through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc is so cool to me and really shows how personable social media can be.

In reading the articles I noticed that the impact of social media in politics has become a central focal point of a candidates campaign. Using the media as a means to promote the individual along with the issues that they plan on tackling in office is a sure way to put them out their publically. I do believe that a lot of what is being written may not necessarily be true, and the ads, interviews, news conferences, etc always have an agenda to promote the candidate. 

Depending on which side of the media you are on can either hurt or help a candidate. There are a lot of ads that are put on reflecting more negatives against each other, rather than focusing on what the issues they plan to tackle are. Public perception of a candidate is huge in regards to swaying voters.  While on freedom house it listed countries that have internet freedom, allowing the internet to be used as a means to manipulate and disinform the citizens.  What struck out the most is that in bold on the site it stated that “Governments around the world have dramatically increased their efforts to manipulate information on social media over the past year.  So how can you trust who is being elected when those who are being elected play a part in that statement?

Intestinal absorption is diminished, as indicated by the abnormal D-xylose and lactose tolerance tests. Absorption is so bad that she cannot absorb vitamin B12. As a result, she has vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. She was placed on an aggressive immunosuppressive regimen, and her condition improved significantly. Unfortunately, 2 years later she experienced unremitting obstructive symptoms and required surgery. One year after surgery, her gastrointestinal function was normal, and her anemia had resolved. Her growth status matched her age group. Her absorption tests were normal, as were her B12 levels. Her immunosuppressive drugs were discontinued, and she is doing well.

1.       A researcher is interested in the relationship between caffeine consumption and level of stress. She has participants keep a diary for one week during which they count the number of cups of coffee, tea, and cola-based soft drinks they consume, as well as recording consumption of chocolate and medications that have caffeine as an ingredient. In addition, participants complete a measure of “daily hassles” experienced during the week.

 

2.       A pair of psychologists are interested in the effects of mood on helping (based on Isen & Levin, 1972). They go to shopping malls and set up observation near telephone booths. Their participants are individuals who use the phone booths when the vicinity is otherwise unoccupied. For half of the participants, the researchers leave a dime to be found in the coin slot of the pay-phone. For all of the participants, when the phone call is completed and the person leaves the telephone booth, a confederate walks by the booth, and drops a file folder full of papers. The researchers watch to see if the participants help pick up the dropped papers.

 

3.       Researchers (Reifman, Larrick, and Fein, 1988) were interested in the factors causing aggression. They looked at an entire baseball season’s worth of news reports. For each game, they recorded the temperature of the locale, and the number of batters who were hit by pitched balls.

 

4.       Researchers are interested in influences on self-esteem. Half of the participants used in this study are male, and half are female. Participants are given a set of anagram problems to solve in a five minute time limit. Half are randomly assigned to receive very easy anagrams, and half are given difficult ones. After completing as many of the anagrams as they can, participants are given a questionnaire labeled “Thoughts and Feelings Questionnaire” that is really a measure of self-esteem.

 

5.       Researchers are interested in what determines how easily people are persuaded. Half of the participants used in this study are male, and half are female. During the session, participants rate their attitude towards an increase in fees that has been proposed at their school. Following this, they listen to a persuasive message providing strong arguments in favor of the fee increase. Finally, they re-rate their attitude towards the proposed fee.

It is globally acknowledged that a link between the environment and public health exists. This topic has grown to be so important that various world organizations hold annual, international meetings for scientists to gather and discuss the latest research findings, breakthroughs, issues, and technology. Some of these organizations are as follows:

In this assignment, you will gain a better idea of where scientific research is headed by reviewing the published abstracts presented at such meetings.

 

Begin this assignment by searching the Internet for the most recent gathering of one of the organizations listed above. You may also search for another major organization that is currently focused on global health and the environment.
