Hernandez Family Episode 2 Hernandez Family Episode 2 Program Transcript FEMALE SPEAKER: It’s good to see all our parents again tonight. And I want to say thank you for being here these last few weeks. Today, we’re going to talk about child development, specifically the behavior of our children, and what are some realistic expectations we can have about how they behave, depending on how old they are. Part of understanding human behavior is looking at where someone is in their life, as well at the impact of their environment, whether it’s school, home life, family, or friends. MALE SPEAKER: What’s there to understand? I mean, come on. They’re kids. They shouldn’t be seen or heard, right? FEMALE SPEAKER: We all want our children to behave. But throughout childhood, there are certain behaviors that come with certain ages that can be very challenging to deal with. FEMALE SPEAKER: Tell me about it. FEMALE SPEAKER: So let’s talk about some of your expectations about your children’s behavior. MALE SPEAKER: Well, my son is nine. That age, I expect him to do his chores and listen to me. When I was nine, you better believe I was listening to my old man, or else, you know? MALE SPEAKER: You’ve got that right. And I don’t understand why my son doesn’t listen to me when I tell them to do something. I mean, what if I didn’t listen and come to this class? We might lose our kids. How do I deal with this better? I mean, get him to listen and behave? FEMALE SPEAKER: Well, Juan Junior is eight, and at that age, their attention can be really hard to not only gain, but– Hernandez Family Episode 2 Additional Content Attribution MUSIC: Music by Clean Cuts Original Art and Photography Provided By: Brian Kline and Nico Danks

Multiple choice

1. Dickie “Mulehorse” Nixon was the star fullback for Whittier College football team. After missing two practices, Nixon was “dropped” from the team by Archie Cox, the head football coach. Following his dismissal, Nixon met with Cox and asked if he could rejoin the team. Cox told Nixon that he was despised by the other players and under no circumstances could he return to the team. As Nixon was leaving Cox’s office very dejected, the coach then said to him, “Hope you decide to transfer, Mulehorse, everybody hates your guts around here”. Later that same evening, Nixon wrote a suicide note in which he stated, “Coach Cox is responsible for my despondency. If I can’t play football for Whittier, I don’t want to live.” After swallowing a bottle of Quaalude barbiturates, Nixon fell unconscious in his dormitory room. Moments later, Pat Checkers, Nixon’s roommate, entered the room and saw his limp body on the floor. Checkers read the suicide note and then attempted to administer aid.

A. prevail, if Cox intended to cause him to suffer emotional distress

B. prevail, because Cox’s remark did in fact cause Nixon to suffer emotional distress

C. not prevail, because Nixon’s drug overdose resulted from his own voluntary act

D. not prevail, unless Cox knew that Nixon was an extremely sensitive person

2. Dave Schultz was a professional hockey player for the Philadelphia Ruffians. One evening in a game between the Ruffians and the Pittsburgh Eskimos, Schultz got hit in the face with a hockey puck. Schultz was rendered temporarily unconscious and had to be taken to the dressing room on a stretcher. While in the dressing room, Schultz regained consciousness but he was in excruciating pain and discomfort. The puck fractured

Schultz’s nose, blackened his eyes and knocked out three teeth.

As the team physician administered medical assistance, Bobby Clarke, the Ruffians’ trainer, entered the dressing room with his camera. Clarke often took pictures of the Ruffian players for his personal collection. Clarke placed a pillow under Schultz’s head and was about to take his picture when the supine athlete protested and told Clarke “get the hell out of here, I don’t want my picture taken.” Clarke took two pictures anyway.

If Schultz brings suit for tortious battery against Clarke, the plaintiff will likely

A. succeed, if Clarke’s act was offensive to Schultz

B. succeed, if Clarke’s act caused Schultz to suffer embarrassment or humiliation

C. not succeed, because Schultz did not suffer any injury

D. not succeed, because Clarke regularly took pictures of Ruffian players

3. If Patty initiates a suit against Marty to recover damages for her broken arm, Patty will

A. recover for assault only

B. recover for battery only

C. recover for assault and battery

D. not recover

4. If Bob sues Carl, Dave, and Ed for battery due to being hit by the rock he will:

A. recover.

B. not recover, because he does not know who threw the stone that hit him.

C. not recover, because he suffered no injury.

D. not recover, because he is presumed to have consented.

Assignment 3: Field Analysis

Due: by 11:55 p.m. EST on the Sunday of Week 7

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to recognize sociological concepts at play in your lived experience.   Keeping a field log of your social and institutional experiences for one day, you will critically discuss how your daily life is shaped and constrained by society. This will allow you engage with many of the sociological concepts learned in class.

Writing expectations

The paper should be 4-6 typed pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1″ margins.  Remember to use APA format to cite and reference your sources.

A presentation that offers additional assistance in completing the assignment is available at https://prezi.com/view/DTakPcZ9NlkobNn93EMi/

Instructions

1) Observation

Create a field log (example).  For one day, observe and record the key interactions and institutions in your lived experience.   Starting with waking up, who is the first person you talk to?  What do you do next- take family members to school, go to the gym, go to work and interact with coworkers?  Throughout the day you will take on different roles by interacting with different people and in different situations, and be in contact with different social institutions (education, government, health, etc). Type or photograph your field log and submit it with your written Assignment.

2) Application

Try to wait one or more days before starting this step.  Revisit your field log and apply sociological analysis to your observations.

  • Describe how our day is shaped and constrained by social norms.
  • Analyze how at least four sociological concepts learned in class (eg. roles, institutions, interactions, impression management, stage theory, emotional labor) apply to your field log observations.  This part of the paper should not be focused on the general social norms you described earlier, dig in with specific concepts in this from our text (refrain from using dictionaries).
  • For at least two of the concepts, find and incorporate an appropriate source that highlights how sociologists study this concept in everyday society (for example, emotional labor in the restaurant industry).  Not sure what constitutes an appropriate source?  See our Announcement on this in the classroom- tips and a learning module are provided there.  For example, we discussed gender socialization:
    • In an article by Crespi (2011) that studied gender socialization and gender roles within the family, results showed that a cross-gender relationship between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons has emerged as significant in determining traditional and non-traditional gender attitudes. The research suggested that the relationship with the parent of the opposite sex could be a strong factor in reducing stereotyped attitudes regarding gender roles (Crespi, 2011). *Use a different example in your paper, the purpose here is to show your research skills rather than repeat my research skills.*

3)      Reflection

Reflect on your role as a larger part of society (i.e. your motives, instincts, feelings, and/or structural constraints).  Discuss ways other people affected you and the ways you affected others in the social experiences of your day.

Sample Field Log

Below is a brief field log to give you an idea of the social interactions and institutions you might look for in your day.  With the observations are sample course concepts that relate to the observations.  Be creative in exploring and applying concepts- we will all apply concepts differently even if the scenes we observe are very similar.

5:45am: Wake up, interact with children.

Gender roles, nuclear family, folkways

6:30am: Interact with spouse and children.  Eat breakfast, run, shower.

8:00am: Arrive at airport, check in interaction with airline customer service; interaction with TSA.

Social structure, bureaucracy, norms, mores, social control

9:00am: Wait with other passengers to board flight; purchase a drink at coffee shop; employees have a tip jar; a family sitting close by is watching the news and commenting on what they think is wrong with other cultures.

Emotional labor, ethnocentrism, Piaget’s stages of development

9:30am: On flight with family having a difficult time with small children; flight attendant offers to help them.

Emotional labor, gender roles, family

12pm: Arrive at destination airport; drive two hours to see extended family.  Along the road there are farmers with fruit stands.  See homeless person asking for assistance in exchange for work.

Poverty, inequality

4pm: Extended family arrives for potluck dinner; look at family photos together and share family memories.  Watch evening news-  local robbery and assault.

Social deviance, material culture

6pm: Stop at church to meet family friend, see a bible study group inside; lots of religious symbols; someone remarks on a new church being built to accommodate a different racial group.

Religion, race, monotheism

This course has “Resubmission” status enabled to help you if you realize you submitted an incorrect or blank file, or if you need to submit multiple documents as part of your Assignment.  Resubmission of an Assignment after it is graded, to attempt a better grade, is not permitted.

Assignment 3 meets the following course objectives:

  • Apply a sociological perspective to the social world.
  • Analyze contemporary social issues using the sociological imagination and use sociological theories and concepts to analyze everyday life.
  • Recognize and define social structure and social interaction
  • Explain the reciprocal relationship in the influence between societal and structural factors, individual behavior and the self’s development

Business Research and Report Discussion

How does research benefit business professionals? How can your business research and report writing continue to develop in terms of fast-paced change on the Internet and other new technologies?

Examples

I personally find it very important to be able to spell correctly and research information in any business setting. When sending emails or reports or anything in writing, it’s so important to use the correct spelling and grammar and to really make sure your facts are straight. It would not be beneficial to write something and send it out without researching and spell checking. It would make you look lazy and uneducated. With spell check and grammar check, it almost seems impossible to send or put out on the internet information that might make you look uneducated, but it really is important to get your facts straight. It’s also important to give credit where the credit is do. If your company were to create a website, and you decide to quote someone, you want to give the credit to the person that said that quote. Otherwise, you can make people angry by stealing someone else’s words.

Research is so important in a business. If a neurosurgeon went into a heart surgery saying, “I’m going to fix this person’s heart my way.” That doctor is going to be looking at a major lawsuit. A surgeon is going to learn and research all that is needed to know to perform a heart surgery, and of course, he’s going to need to know how to do it the way he learned it, not off the top of his head.

Research benefits business professionals in that it helps them to build a business plan, it hlps with making decisions, development , and information. I believe what Donald Trump is saying is that because he does his research first about what he is pursuing he better prepared for it. I think it’s a plus to research potential companies that you may be looking to work for. If you can tell them information aboutthe company they know you have done your research and that it must be important to you. The fast paced changes of the internet and othe new technologies help us to be and stay competitive and up to date

Discussion 2: Bystander Intervention

Separating fact from fiction is imperative when learning how to recognize and respond appropriately, and effectively, to victim/survivors, and bystanders/witnesses, of sexual violence. Although a large majority of sexual assaults do not happen in public settings, in some cases, they do. This is when it is important to understand the experience of the bystander. Bystander intervention can help to explain how, when, and where these kinds of assaults take place; at times, it may even prevent the assault from happening. For this week’s Discussion, watch the video case study of Talia. Locate research on bystander intervention by Victoria L. Banyard and/or Sarah McMahon.

By Day 5

Post your application of the theory of bystander intervention to the behavior of those exhibited in the video. Then, describe a scenario in which a bystander could have influenced this scenario in a different way. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer

Student 1

After the unexpected attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, The United States declared war on Japan. This attack created a negative image of Japanese people by the American public including the government. Soon after the attack happened 1,200 Japanese immigrants were arrested due to suspicion as potential threats to the United States. The American public grew very untrusting of the Japanese immigrants and Japanese citizen. Americans urged the government for justice. The public, military and political figures wanted people of foreign descent to be removed from specific areas of the United States, particularly the west coast. Ultimately, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the executive order 9066, which allowed for the United States war department to create military exclusion areas. The belief was that this would prevent sabotage and espionage. Many Japanese people had to sell their homes, and businesses and were place in Japanese internment camps.

My opinion on the executive order 9066 is not a favorable one. Although it is natural for people to feel angry or distrusting of others when a horrid situation occurs, I do not feel as if the Japanese people who were living in America should have been put into camps, which would resulted in them losing their homes and businesses. Just because the Japanese people who were living in America origins trace back to the country who attacked pearl Harbor does not mean they were all at fault. I feel as if it was an unfair judgement from the government and the American public.

What I learned about the resistance from Japanese Americans against the relocation policies was that there actually was resistance of some form. I learned that some Japanese people protested against the camps and relocations. They felt it was cruel and unfair. Many Japanese people also refused to fight for their country, America, during WWII until the government released their families from the internment camps.

The Civil Liberties Act granted of 1988 granted $20,000 to each surviving Japanese person who was placed in a internment camp during WWII. I personally believe that money would never justify what happened to the Japanese people who were placed in the internment camps. What they dealt with mentally and what they loss physically cannot be replaced with money. Although the money is a nice gesture, it cannot justify what Japanese American and immigrants went through in the internment camps.

Student 2

After watching the movie and reading all the assigned materials I can figure the harmful impact of War II towards Japanese American  community.  In my personal opinion, I don’t think that the executive order by president Franklyn D. Roosevelt was necessary. I think he went to far when he decided the relocation of more than 110,000 Japanese Americans because  the fact they had Japanese origin made them suspicious to conspire  against United States national government.  They forgot that all those people that they segregated from the whole USA society were legal United States citizens; in fact, they went through in the violation of the constitution.

Also, the violation  of the civil rights towards certain groups  appears to be very usual practice from the powerful people  in the history of this country.  Yet, they just kept going massacring, oppressing, abusing and  humiliating innocent people exactly as they did with Native Americans and  Afro-Americans people.  Therefore, Japanese American were not the exception of the this toxic pattern that has being destroying the life of million of persons that have done anything wrong to deserve that kind of abusive and erratic behavior from the elite people who are the ones who made derisions.

Concerning to the official  law that was past to in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to provide a formal apology by the government towards Japanese American community ,for the arbitrary decision that   put in risk of danger the life of thousand of Japanese Americans.  I think it was necessary a public apology because that means that they admitted their fault in what they did.  However, there is no way that they can get the time back and to repair all damage they have done.  Even though, they provided 20,000 dollars to each survivor of incarceration, money compensation is not going to replace  the lives were lost during that historical event.  Japanese American community must have memories of all the abuses they were subject duringg Pearl Harbor  period. So, money and apologies are not enough to compensate all their suffering.  Having said that, I think that only the time can help this cocommunity in the healing process to forgive their executioner.
