Sociology Experiment

Select one of the scenarios below:

  1. Enter an elevator with other people in it. Step into the elevator just enough to clear the door. Continue facing the rear of the elevator until you reach the desired floor. Then just turn around and exit the elevator.
  2. Watch someone watching television for ten minutes. Do not look at the tv; watch the person the entire time. After ten minutes turn the tv off without warning the other person.
  3. Pick up the telephone when it rings. Do not say anything until after the other person speaks. After they speak, do not say hello or any version of hello, but do continue or begin the conversation. After the conversation is over, do not say goodbye or the equivalent. (Do not try this experiment at work. Also, do not use Caller ID to pick your victim).
  4. While having a conversation with a friend or acquaintance, for about ten minutes slowly and continually move closer to him or her. If the conversation continues past ten minutes, spend the next ten minutes of the conversation slowly moving away from the person.

If you absolutely cannot do any of these four scenarios, write your two-page paper reflecting on the reasons why you could not break these social rules. Make sure to make discuss your reaction to the assignment, and what you have learned about social rules from not being able to do any of the experiments.

Second: Report on Your Experience

In your paper make sure to answer the following questions clearly and in detail.

  • Which experiment did you do? With whom did you interact? Were you able to complete the experiment or did you stop breaking the social rule before the interaction was over? (15 points)
  • How did you feel about doing it? Was it easy or hard to do? (15 points)
  • What happened? How did the other person or people around you react? What did the other person(s) do or say? What was your response to their reaction? (30 points)
  • What is your overall reaction to this experiment? What did you learn about social rules? (15 points)

Make sure to review your paper and ensure you answered each question specifically.

Alfred Schutz concept of stocks of knowledge is what is obtained by biographical and subjective experiences and stored as recipes for easy access in order to use proper typifications in different social situations in everyday life. These daily experiences are the basis for “rules for interpreting interactions, social relationships, organizations, institutions, and the physical world” (Appelrouth & Edles, 2010, p. 265). These stocks of knowledge allow us to act automatically to everyday interactions. People are able to quickly understand their role, environment, and social situation and determine how they should act and respond based off of their understood sustained meaning. Schutz said that people live in their own lifeworld made up of meaningful objects and relations that are taken-for-granted but are varied by individual prejudices and interpretations (Appelrouth & Edles, 2010, p. 264).

My own stock of knowledge pertaining to marriage in modern American society comes from my personal experiences with or understanding of the relationships of my parents, my parent’s parents, friend’s, friend’s parents, my husband’s parents, my husband’s siblings, and most importantly my own marriage. I have I obtained this knowledge by observing, asking questions, living through, or subsequently being around these relationships. I have also observed those relationships of celebrities, politicians, or other persons in the lime light, as well as, fictional marriages from books, movies, and television programs as they depict their own version of marriage. I use this stock of knowledge to navigate and support my marriage to the best of my ability. Every day I knowingly and sometimes unknowingly compare what my husband or I am doing right or wrong to what I believe to be right and wrong in the many aspects of marriage from finances, communication, religion, discipline of children, running the household, and so on. I continually use what I have accumulated as meaningful to my marriage and apply it accordingly, which most often comes from those real personal relationships that have been long lasting, and therefore hold more meaning in the area of marriage.

SOC 120 week 4 DQ 1

Week 4 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Equal Access to Healthcare

This discussion presents the opportunity for you to address the inequality of access to healthcare in the United States using moral and ethical reasoning. There is overwhelming evidence that social inequalities affect health outcomes. Many argue that lack of health care access related to poverty is a human rights concern in the United States and that should be subject to public and social justice inquiry. As such, the Affordable Care Act was implemented to promote health equity. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:

From the viewpoint of a social justice activist, present an argument to a Congressional committee as to the ethical and moral reasons for supporting the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Through research, anticipate an item of debate that will be offered to you by the panel and use at least one ethical theory or perspective from the text to support your evidence of moral imperative.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

REPLY TO CLASSMATE’S POST

This week we will be discussing gender in society. The text talks about gender roles of men vs women and Sexism and Discrimination. Are gender roles still rigid in the US society? Does a lot of gender bias still occur at home and work (for both men and women) in American society? Provide an example.

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTION AND WHY? (A MININUM OF 125 WORDS)

                                                          CLASSMATE’S POST

I would like to speak about the role of a home maker. In the 50’s and 60’s it was the norm for the husband to go to work while the wife stays home to cook, clean, and take care of the kids. In the 70’s and 80’s there was a need for both parents to work. Women saw discrimination in jobs they were given the opportunity to perform. For example, women would mostly be employed as a secretary to have a male work over her. While that women might have more experience as her male counterpart but wouldn’t be given the opportunity to do so because she was a woman. In the 90’s and 00’s there was an increase of women in management roles. With the evolution of the work place it is more acceptable to have a women manager. The roles even have reversed from the 50’s and 60’s, it is the norm today to see the husband stay home to cook, clean, and take care of the kids while the wife works. The only issues gender equality in the workplace is if a woman has the same job title as a man she is still paid less for the same amount of work being performed.
