SOC402: Contemporary Social Problems & the Workplace

Week 5 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Ethics in the Workplace

Analyze 2 of the following ethical scenarios:

  • Although John is an honest employee who never takes money from the company cash box, he uses the company car to run personal errands while making sales-rounds. Is this unethical behavior? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Betty is a high producing, devoted employee who might work overtime in an emergency. She tells her boss that she got caught in traffic upon arriving late the next day, when in fact, she overslept. Is this unethical behavior? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Suzy is a sympathetic employee who knows a co-worker is operating a small business on the side (often using company office equipment and paper) but says nothing. Is this unethical behavior? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Noticing her supervisor, a young married man, taking her co-worker, Joanna, who was divorced, home two nights in succession, Diane decided something was going on between them. Without any malicious intent, Diane introduced the matter into the local grapevine and, as so often happens, the rumor got out of hand. Is this unethical behavior? If so, why? If not, why not?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

Module 3

Gas pump In 2011, the total energy use per person in the United States was 91,438 kWh/year, which is the amount of power required to keep 174 60-watt light bulbs lit continuously for one year. Although it seems like a lot of energy, it is 1.3% less than the 2010 average and 13% less than the average in 1978, which was the year of the highest energy consumption since 1949.

You may be surprised to see how much energy people consume. Every time you buy something, you are also buying all the energy used to produce that thing. Every time you pay your taxes, you are paying for photocopies, business trips, and air conditioning in government offices. In fact, on average, every time anyone spends an American dollar, the energy equivalent of half a liter of oil is burned to produce what that dollar buys.

First:

  1. Review the Introduction and Sources and Uses sections (pages 2-11) of What You Need To Know About Energy.
  2. Watch the instructional video for the Personal Energy and Carbon Dioxide Calculator.
  3. Follow the instructions and use the calculator to determine your personal energy use and contribution of CO2 emissions. Be sure to save your Personal Energy Calculator document (with your calculations) on your computer.

Next, post to the discussion board:

  1. Your Personal Energy Calculator document as an attachment
  2. Answers to the following questions:
    • Do you think that your energy use is too high? Is it higher than average in 2011?
    • Do you think you could reduce your energy usage and, if so, in what area?

Once you have posted your own discussion response, you are required to comment on the posts of at least two of your classmates. You can agree or disagree with their posts, but you must explain why you have chosen to do so. Remember, if you provide a quotation from a source (i.e., your textbook or the Internet), you must include the correct citation and reference. Also, be sure to read the feedback on your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module.

Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59 PM EST. Your responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM EST.

Compose your work using a word processor and save it, as a Plain Text or an .rtf, to your computer. When you’re ready to make your initial posting, please click on the “Create Thread” button and copy/paste the text from your document into the message field. Be sure to check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors before you post it.

Graded discussions are worth 30% of your total course grade and will be evaluated using the SLA Discussion Rubric [39.1 KB PDF file].

ETHC-445 Principles of Ethics – Week 1 Ethics Paper

Assignments

Consider the ethical dilemma given below.
Write an ethics paper about it, including all the following information and analysis:

1.      Solve the dilemma using any two of the following Three Primary Schools of Ethics we discuss this week from our assigned reading.
(Ends based, Rules based, or Care based).

2.      Explain the similarities and differences in your two solutions to the same dilemma.

3.      State (and justify) whether you feel the two schools of ethics are worthy of use in “real life” dilemmas.

4.      Do you feel that Aristotle would have approved of either of your solutions? Why or why not?

Please note that your ethics papers this term will be a great practice for you in doing the Final Exam. Your final exam is an essay exam which will follow a very similar format to the homework assignments…so please be sure to spend some time doing your readings and applying them to your written assignments.

Your papers should be about two typed pages, double spaced.
Use the DeVry standard format for the paper (the title page and citation pages do not count among the two pages).  Please organize your thoughts, use headings, and create readable documents with grammar and spelling checked.

The Dilemma will be your choice from either of the two following:

Choice 1:
Over the past few decades, a sizable industry has arisen to serve the demand for ready-made and even customized compositions and term papers. Many students presumably believe there is nothing morally wrong with the practice of buying one of these papers and turning it in to fulfill a course requirement. Review what you read about plagiarism in this chapter. Then write a several-paragraph explanation of its message for a friend who doesn’t get it. (Be sure to follow the approach explained in that section so you avoid committing plagiarism yourself).

Choice 2:
A married couple, both addicted to drugs, are unable to care for their infant daughter. She is taken from them by court order and placed in a foster home. The years pass. She comes to regard her foster parents as her real parents. They love her as they would their own daughter. When the child is 9 years old, the natural parents, rehabilitated from drugs, begin court action to regain custody. The case is decided in their favor. The child is returned to them, against her will. Does ethics support the law in this case? Discuss.

leukemia presentation

Due to an increase in cardiovascular disease and cancer death in the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have formed a joint task force and has tasked you with developing an educational presentation on one of these topics to share with your community. Due to the public’s lack of knowledge on these topics, it is your job to create a presentation that is informative and educational regarding your chosen topic.

Research your topic using online sources such as the FDA, CDC, NCI, and local sources for content on your topic for this presentation.

USE LEUKEMIA

Create a 10- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation (include introduction & reference slides), with appropriate images & speaker notes, to be presented to your community.

Include the following points (either in your bullet points or speaker notes):

  • Provide a brief background on your chosen disease.
  • Identify how this disease develops or how individuals contract the disease.
  • Identify ways of preventing this disease.  If disease is not preventable, identify ways to delay disease progression or improve quality of life of individuals with the disease.
  • How could a fitness or exercise program, if any, help prevent this disease, relieve accompanying symptoms, or facilitate recovery?
  • Explain how to treat this disease using conventional medicine and, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), otherwise known as holistic medicine. You may include current research in the field, in lieu of CAM.
  • Identify the nutritional considerations/needs of the individual with this disease.
  • Recommend at least two online resources & one support group/nonprofit organization for where your audience might search for more information regarding this disease.  Provide brief descriptions &/or direct link/contact information, as appropriate (this is different from your reference slide)
  • Include a brief summary/implications
  • Include a reference slide (minimum of 2 credible sources for the information e.g. not Wikipedia).

Modern Religious Movements Project 9

Your studies in this course mark a journey through the experience of religions around the world. For your HU320 final project you will further this journey with a visit to an actual site where people gather for religious practice or worship. Preferably, you should choose to visit a place of religious practice from a religion other than your own.

During your visit, you should assess what you observe and experience in relation to what you have learned in the course, such as understandings of Ultimate Reality, the history of religious systems, the role of religious rituals in individual and group identity formation, and the connection between religions and cultural influences. Talk with people at the religious site you visit to learn more about the history and religious life of the group as well as gain a sense of an individual’s personal experience in the group.

Using your analysis of information you gather during your visit as well as your synthesis of information from course readings and assignments, you will evaluate the correlation between religion, identity, and culture. Include references to these sources in your project.

Your final project should be a 6-8 page Word document in APA format and respond the following questions:

  1. What is religion? Be sure to include concepts such as beliefs, symbols, rituals, and ethics in your analysis. Illustrate how the religion practiced by the group you visited qualifies or does not qualify as a religion, based on your assessment.

  2. How does religious practice shape individual and group identity? Be sure to discuss the formation of shared meaning developed through religious practice and participative rituals. Illustrate ways you note individual and group identity is shaped by the experiences of the religious group you visited.

  3. How are religious groups shaped in part by cultural elements, and how do religious groups engage or affect secular culture? Be sure to include observations of cultural elements in the religious experience at the site you visited to support your conclusions.

Healthcare Industry—An Economic System

Healthcare Industry—An Economic System

The National Health Expenditure Accounts (NHEA) estimates health care spending over time, including everything from health care goods and services to public health activities, government administration to health care investment. For this assignment, we will focus on health spending by major sources of funds. Please see below for a summary:

Medicare: Medicare spending, which represented 20 percent of national health spending in 2012, grew 4.8 percent to $572.5 billion, a slight slowdown from growth of 5.0 percent in 2011. A one-time payment reduction to skilled nursing facilities in 2012, after a large increase in payments in 2011 due to implementation of a new payment system contributed to the slower growth.

Medicaid: Total Medicaid spending grew 3.3 percent in 2012 to $421.2 billion, an acceleration from 2.4-percent growth in 2011. The relatively low annual rates of growth in Medicaid spending in 2011 and 2012 can be explained in part by slower enrollment growth tied to improved economic conditions and efforts by states to control health care costs. Federal Medicaid expenditures decreased 4.2 percent in 2012, while state and local Medicaid expenditures grew 15.0 percent—a result of the expiration of enhanced federal aid to states in the middle of 2011.

Private Health Insurance: Overall, premiums reached $917.0 billion in 2012, and increased 3.2 percent, near the 3.4 percent growth in 2011. The net cost ratio for private health insurance —the difference between premiums and benefits as a share of premiums —was 12.0 percent in 2012 compared with 12.4 percent in 2011. Private health insurance enrollment increased 0.4 percent to 188.0 million in 2012, but still 9.4 million lower than in 2007.

Out-of-Pocket: Out-of-pocket spending grew 3.8 percent in 2012 to $328.2 billion, an acceleration from growth of 3.5 percent in 2011, reflecting higher cost-sharing and increased enrollment in consumer-directed health plans.
