The Promises and Perils of Nuclear Power

The term nuclear power refers to the production of electrical energy via controlled nuclear reactions. These reactions generate heat that, in turn, creates steam that runs the generators to produce electricity. Approximately 1/8th of the electricity produced in the world is derived from nuclear power. In this assignment, you will analyze the use of nuclear power as an energy resource.

Respond to the following:

  • Discuss the scientific and technical concepts related to the use of nuclear power as an energy resource. Address the following in your response:
    • How is energy released in a nuclear reaction?
    • How are nuclear reactions controlled?
    • What elements are involved in nuclear power production?
    • What nuclear forces are involved?
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy, detailing issues related to production, delivery, cost, radiation, air quality, and waste.
  • Identify a country whose electricity production infrastructure relies heavily on nuclear power. Compare and contrast the use of nuclear power in the United States with the use of nuclear power in this country. Provide examples of the use of nuclear power in your community or state.
  • Consider the three major nuclear accidents in the history of the industry: 3-Mile Island (USA), Chernobyl (Ukraine), and Fukushima Dai-Ichi (Japan). What lessons have been learned from these nuclear accidents that can be or have been used to make nuclear power safer?

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

1.                  Jossy is 6 year old and is in elementary school.  At her last doctor visit, her measured height was 46 inches and her weight was 60 pounds.  Her pediatrician voiced concern over Jossy’s excessive weight gain over the past year.  Her usual diet consists of sweetened cereal with whole milk and fruit juice for breakfast and a juice drink and crackers for her mid-morning snack.  On school days, Jossy buys her lunch at school; her favorite menu items are pizza and tacos.  Jossy’s mother states that she started a new job this past year, which requires that Jossy attend an after-school program until 6 in the evening.  She receives a snack there, usually an 8 oz box of fruit juice and crackers.  Jossy’s parents report that Jossy is “always hungry” and they will often stop for her favorite chicken nuggets, fries, and soda on late evenings when the family is too tired to cook.  Jossy likes to play video games and has a computer and television in her room.  Her father complains that she spends more time in her room than playing outside.  Jossy’s mother is overweight and her father is of normal weight, although he states he was overweight as a child.  The family has discussed getting more exercise on the weekends but are not sure how to add this to their already busy schedules.

a.       Calculate Jossy’s body mass index (BMI) and use this to evaluate her weight status using the information in Figure 16-10.

b.      From the information in chapter 16, what are some factors that may have contributed to Jossy’s excess weight gain over the past year?

c.       Considering her age and the information in chapter 16, what would be a reasonable weight management goal for Jossy?

d.      Using the recommendations in Table 16-7, what strategies would you suggest that Jossy and her parents incorporate into their current lifestyle?

e.       Based on her usual intake, identify at least 2 or 3 nutrients likely to be deficient in Jossy’s diet.  What major food groups provide these nutrients?

f.       Assuming her current level of activity, what are Jossy’s estimated daily kcalorie needs according to Table 16-5?

2.                  Chablis is a 14 year-old female who has been referred to you by her mother and family physician.  Mom is concerned that Chablis is not eating right and her doctor wants you to give Chablis some nutrition advice because she wants to be a vegetarian.  Chablis has heard that red meat contains a lot of fat and she “does not want to get fat.”  A physical exam by her physician shows that Chablis is in the early stage of sexual maturation, she weighs 89 pounds, and she is 5 feet tall.  Chablis is extremely active, spending every afternoon after school playing some kind of sport – basketball, swimming, track, or soccer.

a.       List at least four questions you would include in your assessment session with Chablis.  Why would you include these questions?

b.      How would you address Chablis’ concern about meat and her desire to be a vegetarian? What are some sources of valid nutrition information you might recommend?

c.       How would you counsel Chablis regarding her desire not to get fat?

d.      What advice would you give Chablis’ parents regarding their interactions related to food?

3.                  Angela has been breastfeeding her baby since he was born seven months ago.  When she and her husband took the baby to the pediatrician for his check-up, they were told that he was anemic.  They were surprised, since they thought that human milk contained all of the nutrients the baby needed for the first year of life.  How can you explain the baby’s anemia?

5.         Compare the nutrient needs on the basis of per pound body weight for a 5 month male old infant (13 pounds) and the 20 year old male adult (160 pounds) for kcalories, protein, vitamin D, vitamin C, calcium, and iron – complete the following chart.  NOTE:  To calculate the per pound amount, divide the nutrient need by the number of pounds of the individual.:

Per Pound

6.         The ‘fountain of youth’ has been a mystery for many centuries.  People used believe if they drank water from the fountain, the aging process would stop.  Ponce de Leon was said to be searching for the fountain when he traveled to what is now Florida in the 16th century.  Today, the fountain is associated with Florida in St. Augustine.  Chase, a history student, maintains that the fountain of youth is not a place or a particular thing, but rather is a combination of diet and lifestyle.  How can Chase justify this claim?

7.         Jamie is interested in helping the elderly and works as a volunteer at a local retirement home.  She has noticed that a number of the residents have decreased appetites and diminished senses of taste and smell.  Also, depression seems to be common among the residents.  How can Jamie explain these observations?

8.         Mildred is a 75-year-old retired school teacher who lives in Florida.  About a year ago, Mildred lost her husband of forty-five years.  Mildred has three children, two of whom live out of state.  Her youngest daughter, Charlene, lives about an hour away.  Mildred has been retired for ten years.

Despite the demands of her teaching career, Mildred always managed to prepare and serve evening meals for her family.  During retirement, she continued this routine of cooking for herself and her late husband Vernon.  Now that she is living alone, Mildred continues to live independently preparing her own meals and doing light housekeeping.  She has realized, however, that it is difficult to cook for only one person.  On the positive side, Mildred is occasionally inspired to cook a creative meal and freeze the leftovers for later use.  In recent months, Mildred has become increasingly passive about cooking and has started skipping some meals.  She especially tends to forgo dinner.  Some days she snacks or eats what is available in her refrigerator.  She has also stopped her only form of exercise, walking on a daily basis.

Mildred prefers to live independently but Charlene, her daughter, is concerned about her mother’s change of behavior and knows that her health will decline if her nutrition doesn’t improve.

What advice would you give to Mildred?

What could she do to improve her appetite and motivation to cook?

9.         The elderly may be challenged by chronic health issues as a result of physiologic challenges.  They also may suffer from mental health issues as a consequence of aging.  Discuss the many challenges one might work around to enhance the nutritional status of an elderly client as a healthcare professional.

        a.   What is the equilibrium price? What is the equilibrium quantity?  Fill in the surplus-shortage column and use it to explain why your answers are correct.

b.   Graph the demand for wheat and the supply of wheat.  Be sure to label the axes of your graph correctly.  Label equilibrium price P and the equilibrium quantity Q.

c.   Why will $3.40 not be the equilibrium price in this market?  Why not $4.90? “Surpluses drive prices up; shortages drive them down.”  Do you agree?

4.

How will each of the following changes in demand and/or supply affect equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity in a competitive market; that is do price and quantity rise, fall, remain unchanged, or are the answers indeterminate because they depend on the magnitudes of the shifts? Use supply and demand diagrams to verify your answers.

CURRENT IMMIGRATION DEBATES

The topic that I plan to address in my “Report On…” refers to the current immigration debates in the U.S. Both my parents are immigrants, so this issue is very personal, but also I realize  that it can affect 11 million of unauthorized workers in the United States.

My research question refers to the discussion of three of the major proposals that are currently circulating in the U.S. Congress regarding immigration:

-border security
-possible path to citizenship for unauthorized workers residing in the U.S.
-special status for temporary agricultural workers.

I would like to explore  in my paper the background and content of this proposals, the major points of disagreement, and the influence of certain politicians and interest groups on the subject matter.

The three sources that I have consulted up to this point are the following (no encyclopedias):

Bowden, Charles. “Exodus” in Mother Jones. September/October 2006.

Huntington, Samuel. Who are We? New York: Simon & Schuster, 2005.

Massey, Douglass et al. Beyond Smoke and Mirrors. Mexican Immigration in the
Era of Economic Integration. New York: Sage Foundation, 2005.

Identify and clearly describe an ethical issue (answer attached)

Deliverable Length:

1,200-1,500 words

Details:

Weekly tasks or assignments (Individual or Group Projects) will be due by Monday and late submissions will be assigned a late penalty in accordance with the late penalty policy found in the syllabus. NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.

First Draft of your Key Assignment

This will be a first draft of your Individual Project for the Key Assignment. Prepare your first draft of the paper, submit it to your professor, and then post it to the Discussion Board so that your professor and colleagues can comment and provide feedback before you revise it for your final submission in Week 5. Please use proper grammar, rules of English composition, and APA style.

In Weeks 1-3, you looked at many foundational topics related to ethics. You examined basic ethical issues you might encounter in the workplace and “philosophy of life” of ethical theorists; you applied basic ethical principles to situations that may challenge your own principles; you developed a personal mission statement; and you identified ethical issues from a workplace case study. This Key Assignment will take some of those concepts a step further. For this Key Assignment, you will assume a leadership role in an organization, and you will be required to develop a new section of your business’s code of ethics to permanently address the ethical issue you have identified.

For this task, you will have 3 primary responsibilities or deliverables:

  • Identify and clearly describe an ethical issue.
  • Articulate a code of ethics that you feel is appropriate to address the ethical issue.
  • Apply your code of ethics, along with concepts of leadership and integrity to arrive at your ultimate resolution to the ethical issue chosen.

The task will be divided into 3 sections-one to address each of the above deliverables.

Part 1: Identifying the Ethical Issue

There are a number of ethical issues related to business. The first step in this task will be for you to choose an ethical issue on which to base the remainder of your Key Assignment. Following is a list of potential business-related ethical issues from which you may choose, or you may identify an ethical issue not listed below based on your own research, or based on your own personal and/or professional experiences. For Part 1 of this task, you are to identify and describe your chosen business-related ethical issue. For Part 1, identifying and describing your chosen business-related means that you are to do the following:

  • State the ethical issue chosen from the list, or state the ethical issue you have chosen that is not from the list. For example, “I have chosen to use the following ethical issue for this assignment: deceptive advertising.”
  • Provide a fact-based scenario that will illustrate to your audience the ethical issue involved. For example,

The company General Gadgets, Inc. has been in business for 30 years, but in the last 10 years, it has watched its sales continually plummet because of increased competition in the market. General Gadgets held a 50% market share through the year 2001, but it has watched that market share dwindle to 5% in 2010. In an effort to boost its lagging sales, Widgets, Inc. has hired a marketing firm, Sell It Like It Is Marketing, LLC, to come up with a new marketing campaign. You are the vice president are are in charge of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for General Gadgets, Inc. It has been brought to your attention that the marketing campaign being put together is going to do more than just bend the truth a little in terms of claims about the durability of General Gadgets, Inc.’s newest product.

  • Discuss the impact that this ethical issue may have on all interested parties. For example “As the VP of CSR, your concern is that this marketing campaign may have a long-term negative impact on the business, despite the potential short-term revenue boost. It could damage the company’s reputation; it could increase the potential for product-related lawsuits; and internally, it could further erode the employee’s faith in leadership, which has taken a hit as a result in the downward direction of the business in general.”

The examples provided do not represent complete answers, but serve only as examples to provide a little direction for you in getting started. Your answers should go into more detail so that the reader does not have basic questions related to the issue involved or the facts of your scenario. Also, the more detail you use when developing your fact scenario, the easier it will be to complete Part 3 of this assignment.

Following is a list of potential business-related ethical issues from which to choose. Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and you may choose an issue not from this list. Whether you are choosing from this list or from outside of this list, it is important that you focus your energies on the last two sections above, so that the reader has a clear picture of the issue and the facts going forward.

  • Omitting the details of certain side effects of drugs by pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Manufacturing products that are designed to fail sooner to generate repeat business (built in obsolescence)
  • Selling products that the company knows are harmful or addictive to consumers
  • In a retail setting, profiling potential customers based on race, age, religion, etc. (for example, following a customer around while he shops because of his appearance)
  • Bait and switch tactics
  • Deceptive advertising
  • Deceptive packaging or wasteful or unnecessary packaging
  • The number of minorities or women in positions of senior leadership in an organization
  • Bribing of government officials to obtain contracts
  • Using insider information
  • Ignoring health and safety concerns in the workplace

The deliverable length for Part 1 should be at least 400 words in length.

Part 2: Develop a Business Code of Ethics

Now that you have identified for your reader the details involved with your proposed business-related ethical issue, you must determine what rules need to be in place for the organization to eliminate or reduce this issue as a problem for the company going forward.

A code of ethics may help to eliminate some of the differences of opinion when faced with an ethical decision-making situation. Two intelligent professionals may view a situation differently. Their own morals and personal experiences may cause them to reach different conclusion as to acceptable behavior in the circumstance. A code of ethics will make clear what the right thing to do is in that situation.

When professional organizations create a code of ethics, this code serves the purpose of unifying or compromising differences in morality. Two people with differing personal values can share a set of values that they agree will promote their particular profession.

Why are the rules important? The rules are important because they promote a particular standard of ethical behavior. This means that the rules set a minimum standard, a baseline, with respect to certain levels of acceptable behavior expected of all members of the organization.

  • For Part 2 of this Key Assignment, you are to prepare a detailed code of ethics/code of conduct designed to address the ethical issue you described in Part 1. Use the Internet, the library, and other credible sources to find examples of existing codes of ethics/codes of conduct, for an idea of how to format or structure your code of ethics. Please tailor your code of ethics to the specific industry you have chosen for your fact scenario.
  • For this task, you can create a general code of ethics for those areas that do not deal with your chosen ethical issue. However, for those sections of your code of ethics that deal specifically with your chosen ethical issue, please make certain that you go into detail. For example, based on the General Gadgets, Inc., scenario discussed in Part 1, the code of ethics does not need to go into detail on the subject of conflicts of interest, but it should go into detail on the subject of marketing responsibly and securing the trust of customers.

Remember: Design your code of ethics to provide guidance for an employee faced with an ethical decision-making opportunity. Keep in mind that guidance does not mean that the code of ethics will always tell the employee specifically what he or she should do in every situation. However, it should provide sufficient direction that a thoughtful, well-meaning employee should be able to determine the course of action she or he should take, including seeking out advice from a superior, or a particular department or group within the organization.

Your proposed code of ethics should include comments for the sections addressing the ethical issue that is the focus of this assignment. Your comments should indicate why each provision is important, and how it is intended to address the chosen ethical issue.

Here is my outline that you would have to work from:

For week 5 we have been assigned a final project which we will do a rough draft in phase 4. In phase 1 we had an introduction to ethics and reviewed Ethics, Morals and Values. We gave examples on how we perceive and interpret them. We also covered some philosophers and how philosophy is incorporated into our life both professional and personal. In phase 2 we covered Ethical theories and how corruption affects us in the work place. In phase 3 we covered critical thinking and personal ethics. We covered professional business statements and how we could use personal mission statements.

In the next 2 phases we will corporate and professional ethics, and applying personal and professional ethics. The following is a simple outline of Phase 4 Individual project which will be a rough draft of Phase 5 final project.

Part 1

Ethical issues related to business:

1. Bribing of government officials to obtain contracts

2. Using insider information

These ethical issues that are illegal could ruin a company’s reputation and in some cases the company could go out of business company’s owners and officials that are involved could serve jail sentences. I chose two because I believe that are related.

Part 2

Code of ethics:

  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Performance Excellence
  • Accountability

The code of ethics could be really long but it is broken down into categories which are mentioned above. The violation described in part 1 falls under integrity.
