ESSAY TOPICS: for your essay (4 pages), you must choose one of the following four topics:

1)      Immigration Essay: Immigration has become a hotly debated political issue in recent years, particularly with respect to immigration (particularly illegal immigration) from Mexico to the United States. For this topic, I ask you to do three things:

A)     By talking to family members and conducting historical research (your own investigation into your family’s past), describe what push and/or pull factors motivated past generations of your family to move

B)     Using the textbook, lecture material, and/or additional scholarly research materials (journal articles, books, etc.), compare and contrast these push/pull factors to those that have and continue to drive Mexican immigration (both legal and illegal) to the United States today

C)     Drawing from your findings, provide a well-argued and evidence-based comparison and analysis on US immigration policy towards Mexico

2)      Cultural Landscape Essay: A cultural landscape is defined as a place–either a humanly producedor physical landscape – that is attached with social meaning. The suburban landscape, for instance, has historically embodied the values and principles of the “American Dream.” Based on the textbook, lecture material, and/or your own historical research (newspaper articles, journal articles, books, Google searches), identify a cultural landscape, in Washington state, or anywhere else of your own interest (such as Yellowstone National Park; Spokane, WA; the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC; Disney World; the 9/11 memorial site in New York; Hollywood, CA, etc.), and do the following two things:

A)     Using concepts and material from class (i.e., the “socio-spatial dialectic”), describe why the landscape you selected qualifies as a “cultural landscape” – such as, what social meanings are associated with the place/landscape you selected?

B)     Trace the history of this place/landscape and provide a narrative that captures its origins as a “cultural landscape” and how it has (or has not) changed through time, in its social and/or physical form

3)      Commodity Chain Analysis: In our present-day society, it is increasingly difficult to know whereour food is produced and where our products are made. It is almost as if the things we buy magically appear on the store shelves; we have little idea and often any thought concerning the process of how that thing arrived on the shelf for us to buy. ‘Made in China’ labels only tell part of the story; this assignment asks you to tell the rest of it. Your task is to pick one commodity, one brand and one country (for example, i-Phones, Apple, and China), and trace how this product, from its origins, ended up on a store shelf in Cheney or Spokane, or from wherever you purchased it (it may have been online). You will need to do your own investigative research (Google searches, etc.) to uncover the company, or variety of companies, involved in producing the commodity, and the various production processes, labor conditions, and facilities that the commodity (or its various components) traveled through before finally arriving on the store shelf.

4)      World Systems Theory: For this paper topic, I expect you to first review Immanuel Wallerstein’sworld systems theory – of core, periphery, and semi-periphery – and the global, political-economic forces driving the carving of the world into these three broad regions. I also expect you to then review, in your own summation, George Modelski’s model of world leadership as well as Nikolai Kondratiev’s “long waves” of the global capitalist economy. Within these three theoretical models, there are compelling implications for understanding and contextualizing world political and economic history as well as the future. After reviewing these three figures and models, identifying their strengths and/or weaknesses, as you see it, you are to, lastly, provide you own “predictive” narrative that outlines your own feelings about 1) the power of these three models (when taken together) to chart out a course of possible futures scenarios, and 2) what kind of future or possible future(s) you see as most likely given what we know from the past historical trends and patterns illuminated by each of the models.

CITATION GUIDLES: Please cite your work properly:

There are three principles to follow: 1) When directly citing a source (book, article, etc.), place “quotation marks” around the text pulled from the source, and cite the last name of the author followed by the year of publication and page number in parentheses, such as (Anderson, 2012, pg. 12). This is called a parenthetical citation. 2) Alternatively, rather than using many direct quotes in your essay, it is advised to paraphrase your sources using your own words and summary. Here, simply use the above style of parenthetic citation after a sentence that is based on a particular source, and drop the page number, such as (Anderson, 2012). 3) At the end of your essay, you must provide a list of references that provide the full details of each citation.

An example for a book would be the following (last name, first initial, (publication year). Title in italics. Location and name of publisher):

Harvey, D. (2003). The New Imperialism. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press.

For a journal article (last name, first initial (publication year). Title. Journal name in italics, volume number (issue number), and page numbers):

Anderson, M. (2010). The Discursive Regime of the “American Dream” and the New Suburban Frontier: the Case of Kendall County, Illinois. Urban geography, 31(8), 1080-99.

For a newspaper article (last name, first initial (publication year). Title. Name of newspaper in italics, section [if there is one], page numbers [if there are any], and month and day of publication):

Roeder, D. (2008). Bronzeville ‘Land Grab’; Residents Say They Just Want Area to ‘Maintain its Mixed-

Income Character’. Chicago Sun-Times, Financial, 43, May 5.

There is no precise style to organize your references in terms of punctuation, parentheses, etc., but you must be consistent.

Introduction

Hays’s (2008) work introduces the ADDRESSING model, which asks clinicians to look into their own areas of cultural influence, privilege, and potential bias. ADDRESSING stands for age (and generational influence), developmental and acquired disabilities, religion and spiritual identity, ethnicity and racial identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, indigenous heritage, national origin, and gender. Although there are many other aspects of diversity, Hays’s model has been a useful framework for educators, counselors, and psychologists to examine their own cultural influences, potential biases, and perspectives. They can then develop a plan to address the impact on their work with others.

Fisher, in the course text Decoding the Ethics Code, presents a number of ethical and legal issues of which psychologists and future psychologists (like yourself) need to be cognizant. Additionally, there are several ethical reasoning models presented that help you understand how to start thinking about these risky issues.

The last of your discussions for this course, this is yet another opportunity for you to critically think about how multicultural, legal, and ethical issues intersect and intertwine. Consider the situation carefully as this is the last opportunity to use your critical thinking skills to analyze a situation that has a host of professional concerns.

Instructions

In your previous discussion, you studied the case study about Karen, a Latina, lesbian woman. This discussion will be a little different as you will see a dramatization of a complicated situation.

Review the media piece, Problem Based Scenario, linked in the Resources and then respond to the following:

  • What are the ethical issues in this situation? Specifically identify which codes impact this scenario.
  • What are the multicultural concerns?
  • What are the legal issues?

Cite appropriate scholarly research to support your findings.

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Respond please 5 8 sentences

  • What questions do you have about the requirements for your peers’ profession?
  • What resources or individuals are you aware of that could help them clarify their career goals or requirements for their field?

While I am finishing my degrees I plan on taking the exam and becoming a BCaBA (Board Certified assistant Behavioral Analyst). While working as a Behavioral analyst assistant, I will need to be supervised by a BCBA (Board Certified Behavioral Analyst). Once I earn so many hours supervised I can then take the exam to become a BCBA. After I graduate with my doctorate I plan on taking the board exam and becoming a licensed Clinical and forensic Psychologist. I live in West Virginia, the APA licensing requirements is that I as a graduate student have 500 hours of supervised direct client contact by the end of my doctorate program. I did my research on different organizations that govern my specialized field which is clinical psychology with a specialization in forensic psychology. What I found was that there are a great deal of organizations that govern clinical psychology because of the wide range of disorders that clinical psychologists can treat. Some to mention include: schools, hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, jails, and psychiatric hospitals. The field in which I currently work there is a limited amount of individuals that will be helpful to me and my career. The individuals that have been and will be helpful to me and my career are my clients I work with every day. They are all different in the way they handle stressful situations and in their disorders. The book Career Paths in Psychology was a very interesting book and I enjoyed what I read a great deal. As I read the book I really did not learn much about my career; however, I learned a lot of interesting facts about other fields of psychology. The reason I did not learn much about my career path is because when I chose my career as a new college student I did extensive research. The APA Code of Ethics has been a helpful resource and will continue to be.

As of right now I do not have any questions in regards to career. I have spent a lot of time doing research on my career choice, the requirements, licensing procedures, the pros/cons of the job, and the Ethical codes. The information that I could not find out by doing research in my opinion is only stuff that can be learned by hands on experience.

M2A1 PERSONALITY THEORIES – Television Character

Assignment 1: Discussion—Television Character

Television provides us with many interesting examples of interpersonal and neurotic behaviors. In this assignment, you will delve into the life and actions of some of your favorite television characters and analyze them using Horney’s coping strategies.

Interestingly, Horney’s three coping strategies for one’s neurotic needs correlate very well with three of Adler’s different personality types:

   Horney’s moving-toward strategy—Adler’s getting or leaning type

Horney’s moving against—Adler’s ruling or dominant type

Horney’s moving away from—Adler’s avoiding type

Using Horney’s theory of coping with neurotic needs with three different interpersonal orientations, select a TV program of your choice containing a character that Horney would identify as exhibiting neurotic behaviors.

As you watch a full episode of this show, focus on this character and tally each instance of moving-toward, moving-against, and moving-away behavior.

Research Horney’s theory using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources. Based on your research, respond to the following:

Discuss this character’s neurotic needs and trends.

What do you think has happened in his/her life that has led to these behaviors?

In addition to general life events, how has gender and culture influenced the character’s neurotic needs and behaviors?

How do these interpersonal orientations impact the way this character interacts with others and develops relationships?

Write your initial response in 4–5 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.  REFERENCES AND LINKS TO SITES NEEDED.

Broderick & Blewitt (2015) define fluid intelligence as “basic operational characteristics that seem to directly reflect how well the hardware of the nervous system is working, affecting the efficiency of processes like reasoning.” Crystallized intelligence is defined as “the compilation of skills and information we have acquired in the course of our lives.” In simpler terms, fluid intelligence can be seen as the speed and efficiency of our intellectual processes. Crystallized intelligence is the accumulated knowledge of a person’s lifetime that includes things like languages, skills, and other things that a person has memorized.

As adults age, their level of fluid intelligence seems to decrease, which results in slower and less efficient processing ability. Older adults can also still learn, though it will be a slower and more difficult process due to the decline in working memory. However, older adults tend to be better at solving familiar, every-day problems and memory games than younger adults due to their large crystallized resources (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).

Professionals could use this information to support positive adjustment for aging adults by providing more relatable examples in training for a new role or being patient when the older adult is learning something new. Additionally, fluid intelligence should be assessed directly for older adults because it cannot be significantly predicted using subjective or objective measure (Shakeel & Goghari, 2017). Since fluid intelligence cannot be predicted, this encourages a case-by-case approach to the training or education of older adults. Interestingly, Cooper et al. (2009) found that moderate alcohol consumption was associated with better cognition in regions of France. However, that study’s results would need further research to eliminate any confounds and expand applicability. If the effect still stands, moderate alcohol intake could be advised to older adults to benefit their cognition.

Individuals experience gradual losses in cognitive functioning in late adulthood. Cognition and healthy brain function depends on the preservation of white matter and synaptic connections (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). During this stage, pragmatic (crystallized) intelligence, such as verbal ability and factual knowledge can increase until age ninety for healthy individuals (Ziegler, Cengia, Mussel, & Gerstorf, 2015). However, mechanic (fluid) intelligence is normally categorized by a gradual decline in processing speed and inhibitory functions. Fluid intelligence is considered the processing efficiency of the cognitive system, while crystallized intelligence is viewed as the product of that process (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). These intellectual resources, in relation to the gradual declines and increases within late-adulthood, tend to balance one another. In other words, the visible decline in learning and problem solving during this stage can be balanced by crystallized intelligence (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). The understanding of emotional intelligence and health behaviors in late-adulthood are vital to an individual’s positive transition.

During late-adulthood, individuals are adjusting to the decline in cognitive functioning that they experience. In order to positively support this transition, professionals must understand the importance of emotional intelligence in relation to cognitive functioning. Typically, a person with a high degree of openness is imaginative and easily able to deal with conflict and various situations. The “differential preservation hypothesis” describes openness as the key element in decelerating cognitive decline before the age of seventy (Ziegler, Cengia, Mussel, & Gerstorf, 2015). However, after seventy years of age, individuals who are more open or able to express themselves and invest their time effectively, show a relatively stable decrease in functioning (Gerstorf et al., 2015). Professionals can utilize these findings to increase the level of life-satisfaction that individuals in late-adulthood. They can create a foundation of positivity for their clients by suggesting that they are open to the transitions that will occur.

Healthy behaviors are vital to life-satisfaction and positive transitioning in late-adulthood. In order to foster positive adjustments for aging adults, professionals must understand the necessity of pro-health activities. These activities include healthy habits such as diet, exercise, and other preventative behaviors (Sygit-Kowalkowska, Sygit, & Sygit, 2015). These actions are directly associated with the ability to understand and control the emotions of older people (Sygit-Kowalkowska et al., 2015). Professionals may consider the importance of pro-health activities and incorporate them into their client’s daily routine. This process could support the transition that aging adult’s experience.

I think that Erikson’s stage theory is very relevant to my future specialization and professional career in I/O psychology. The generativity vs. stagnation stage in middle adulthood would be where most workers reside. This would influence my role because I would aim to increase productivity and worker satisfaction; this means making worker’s lives as fulfilling as possible.

I found the theme of leisure and work particularly interesting and relevant. Workers of all ages would have different concepts of leisure and work and it would be important to recognize all differences in how they perceive those concepts. Work in I/O psychology would have to account for all of those varying viewpoints to help workers maintain a healthy work/life balance and high level of satisfaction and fulfillment (Mansell, 2017). Part of my future role would likely include designing policies to help workers achieve an optimal work/life balance; this would help retain talented employees and boost worker morale in general (Schlegel, 2017).

Middle Adulthood is a time when there is a reflection on whether a satisfaction level has been achieved.  It is a time when a ‘mid-life crises’ can occur, but is more indicative of shifting concerns (Broderick & Blewitt, 2014).  The physical and psychological changes in middle adulthood can be a cause for concern.  The physical changes can include immune system compromise, visual changes, hearing loss, menopause, and weight gain.  Psychologically, there can be dissatisfaction with marriage or career, raising children, empty nest syndrome, and lack of a social life.  Mid-life is also a time where they could be in a ‘sandwich’ situation.  They could be taking care of elderly parents, while also taking care of their own children.

“Midlife serves an important preparatory role in the transition to old age, the evening of life” (Lachman, 2004).  The reading did not specifically address this.  The reading did detail the developmental themes of slowing down due to aging issues.  Specifically it touched on Baltes theory of growth, maintenance and regulation of loss.  They may focus more attention on the past than they have before, Cohler (1982) suggested, serving to enrich their narrative identities and to reveal more nuanced understandings of the self (McAdams, 2014, pg 62, para2).

As a clinical therapist, I will need to understand the particular circumstances that the patient is working through.  It will take patience as middle adulthood can be a difficult transition.  Psychologically, there is the realization that they are no longer considered a young adult, although they still feel like one.  The older middle adults are feeling the physical effects, such as slower movement and being more susceptible to illness, as well as cognitive concerns of not being able to find words as easily and losing their ‘train of thought’, such as forgetting what they are saying or walking into a room and forgetting why they went in there.  It is imperative to be sensitive to the issues of aging.

As I am in the center of middle adulthood, the reading was very helpful in understanding the changes that are happening by psychologically and physiologically.  I have enjoyed reading this chapter.

Assessing Strengths and Weaknesses

Prepare: In this course, you have been given the opportunity to self-reflect. This discussion will provide you the opportunity to gain additional insight about yourself from the perspective of others. You will complete a 360- degree exercise where you will first self-reflect and then interview a selection of others about your strengths and weaknesses. Start by reading the Week Three Instructor Guidance and section 6.7 “The Trait Approach” in your textbook. The section in the textbook covers the Big Five personality traits; this will provide you with insight into the five factors of personality: Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (also known as Emotional Stability) (OCEAN).

The first step in this exercise is to list three areas that you consider your strengths and three areas that you consider your weaknesses. Keep the list to yourself, and do not share with anyone.

Next, identify three people who know you fairly well (e.g., parent, spouse, friend, co-worker, supervisor, etc.). Explain to each of them that this is a survey for school that will help you analyze your strengths and opportunities for growth.

Ask each person the following two questions and record the results.

  • What are three areas of strength that you see in me?
  • What are three areas where I could improve?

Reflect Icon Reflect: Compare the list you made with the responses from the people you selected. Do you see yourself as others see you? Ultimately, how well do you know yourself?

Observing the Physical Context

Observing the Physical Context

A person’s physical environment has a direct influence on his or her behavior. Individuals interpret the interaction between the physical environment and behavior in a multitude of ways. For example, built environments are man-made environments and these environments can be structured to promote health. Research has shown that people tend to favor elements of the natural environment; therefore, it is important to include elements such as sunlight, water features, and plants when building a health-promoting environment. Stimulation, control, and behavior-setting theories attempt to provide additional context to the relationship between the physical environment and human behavior.

Tasks:

Using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, explore these concepts and respond to the following:

  • Choose a public place to go and observe the environment for thirty minutes. Be sure to consider all the built environment features and key concepts (such as accessibility, activity, adaptability, comfort, and control) used to describe the relationship between the physical environment and behavior. Share your observations.
  • Observe the individual or group responses to the observed environment. Share your observations.
  • Using a minimum of five of the key concepts, discuss how your behavior was affected by the observed physical environment. For example, was the environment comfortable and accessible?
  • Discuss how understanding your behavior may influence how you interact with others.
