ANYONE GOOD WITH STUDY OF RELIGION

Assignment #1: M1 Theology and Religious Studies

Instructions

Pick a religion, preferably not your own.  Then write two paragraphs.  For the first paragraph, suppose you are studying that religion as a religious studies major.  What would you ask about it? For the second paragraph, suppose you are a theologian defending that religion. What would you say about it?  The goal of this assignment is to show that you know the difference between a religious studies major and a theologian.

Limit your answer to one or two sentences for each question.  Here is an example.  Suppose you are looking at Islam.  In the first paragraph, religious studies student might ask what the meaning of the Ramadan fast is to Moslems.  In the second paragraph, a Moslem theologian might argue why keep the Ramadan fast.

Your answer should be between 150 and 300 words. Assignment must be typed in MS Word, where you can check grammar and spelling. After completing your assignment in Word, save the document, then click on “Add a File” button to attach the file and submit your assignment. Keep in mind that only one file is allowed per submission, and only one submission is allowed.

Retrospective Analysis of Personality

In  this assignment, you will take a retrospective look at your life  history.  First, choose an area of the brain and explain what it does,  as well as how it would impact an activity from your daily life. Then,  analyze the roles of nature and nurture in shaping the person you are  today.  Next, describe the influences of culture, environment, and  biology on your gender-role behavior. Subsequently, discuss possible  sources of inaccuracy and bias in any retrospective analysis. Finally,  discuss the reasons why systematic scientific studies are considered  more valuable than individual accounts

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

Section 1 (1-2 paragraphs):

  • Choose one of the following areas of your brain and explain what it does:
    • Thalamus
    • Reticular formation
    • Brain stem (pons and medulla)
    • Cerebellum
    • Limbic system
    • One of the four lobes of the cerebral cortex
  • Explain  how the area you described contributes to a specific activity from your  everyday life.  (Example: During horseback riding, the cerebellum  integrates information from the motor systems and balance system.)

Section 2 (1-2 paragraphs):

All  of us have been shaped by both nature (biology) and nurture  (environment), making us the persons we are today.  In most cases, it is  difficult to completely disentangle the separate effects of nature vs.  nurture with much certainty.  However, we can make some educated guesses  based on our knowledge of familial tendencies that we may have  inherited, as well as knowledge of our environment and experiences.  In  this section, we ask for you to make some educated guesses about the  roles of nature and nurture in your life.

  • Describe  the role of nature (biology) in shaping what kind of person you are  today. Provide a specific example of the role of nature.
  • Describe  the role of nurture (environment) in shaping what kind of person you  are today.  Provide a specific example of the role of nurture.

Section 3 (1-2 paragraphs):

  • Describe the influences of culture, your environment, and biology on your gender role behavior.
  • Use specific examples from your own life to explain your answers.

Section 4 (1-2 paragraphs):

  • Discuss the fallibility of memory in terms of bias and inaccuracy when you reflect on your past.
  • Identify specific memory biases that could affect how you remember your past.  Include factors related to cognition.
  • Use specific examples from your own life.

Section 5 (1 paragraph):

  • Describe  why the science of psychology places more emphasis on results based on  scientific studies than it does on personal experiences and anecdotes.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be  typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with  one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or  school-specific format.  Check with your professor for any additional  instructions.
  • To  keep this essay short and manageable, your only sources for your paper  should be your own experience and the Webtext. For this reason, APA  citations and references are not required for this assignment.
  • Include  a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s  name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date.  The cover  page and the reference page are not included in the required page  length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Relate psychological concepts to real-world situations.
  • Describe the major theories of personality development, learning, memory, cognition, consciousness, development and social psychology.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in psychology.
  • Write clearly and concisely about psychology using proper writing mechanics.

LaDea’s Post

1. Inherently Good or Bad:
Each day I keep telling myself that majority of humans are inherently good, but than I always have to remind myself that there is bad in everyone. No one in this world is      perfect, and many have more bad than others. Unfortunately, it is common to assume that people will do things to serve their selves rather than the group, and this is            more often true rather than false. This is not to say that people are not inherently good. Overall, look at how people are treating each other.
2. Cultural Background:
I am a single African American/ Native American Female. I am in my late mid 30’s. I am a Baptist/ Christian. I speak English and I am originally from Timmonsville, SC.     I have a BS in Therapeutic Recreation and a MPH.
3.Culture and Beliefs:
My cultural background has somewhat pursed my beliefs and ideas about people. The reason for this is because as you see on the news everywhere many African       American are being brutally killed or gun down for no reason. I am not a judgmental person, but it’s hard not to think a certain way when it’s happen on many                   occasion. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt until they show their true color.
4. My Values:
Growing up I’ve learned many values in my household. My grandparents and parents instill in me a strong work orientation, strong religious orientation, and a strong kinship bonds.  I was taught to treat people with dignity and respect.  My grandmother always taught me to  never judge anyone, because you don’t know their story. Our family lives by these three rule; loyalty , honest, and respect.  If those rules or values were ever broke they mean you no good, and it’s time to move on.
5. Intersection of Culture and Values:
The intersection between my culture and value is quiet similar. My culture background and value have some of the same up bringing I was taught. We’re highly religious, display a strong work orientation, and value honest and respect.  However, there are room for improvement in the education background. My culture and Value goes hand in hand.

Global Psychology Discussion

Select 2 of the prompts below, (your choice of which 2 prompts) and write a 500 word discussion. (250 words per prompt)

1.  Cereans are an alien race living on a distant planet called Alderaan, and whose bodies function the same way as humans’ bodies do. A galactic scholar has been learning about the Cereans’ evolutionary history. The following is an excerpt from the scholar’s work:

The Cereans first appeared approximately 50,000 years ago. Throughout their evolutionary history, they have lived in a region on Alderaan that gets very little sunlight, resulting in very little exposure to UVR. The Cereans have never migrated elsewhere. Approximately 10,000 years ago, they discovered a food source that provides an ample supply of Vitamin D for their dietary needs.

Based on this scholar’s work, draw a line graph that approximates the expected relationship between the Cereans’ evolutionary history (starting with -50,000 [meaning when Cereans first appeared] and ending at 0 [meaning now]) and their skin tone (smaller value means lighter skin tone; higher value means darker skin tone).

2.  Alice complains about how it is unfair that French people eat fattier foods but they have better cardiovascular health than Americans do. Alice is a European-American and blames this difference on genetic differences between European-Americans and French people. Based on existing psychological research, do you agree with her statement? In explaining your answer, please provide two alternative explanations.

3.  A collection of societies uses seashells as currency. A large-scale survey suggests that one hundred seashells is the threshold that separates people who are wealthy from people who are not wealthy. Draw a line graph that depicts the expected relationship between the number of seashells a society generally has and a society’s general health outcome as a dependent variable (for which a higher score means better health outcomes).

4.  You are trying to convince your parents why studying psychology is not a waste of time. Your parents, on the other hand, complain that psychology is not an exact science due to its subjectivity. They contrast it to modern medicine, which they think is an objective science, such that all doctors agree on all things medicine related. Your parents are, of course, wrong—but how are they wrong? Cite two pieces of evidence from the textbook to support your claim.

Week 2 – Discussion

1 1 unread reply. 3 3 replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

 Past to Present

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the Harré (2006) Key Thinkers in Psychology e-book. Examine one of the schools of thought (psychoanalysis, behaviorism, etc.) presented in the reading that is significant in the evolution of modern psychology. Select one theorist associated with this school of thought and explain the specific theoretical perspective(s) and/or contribution(s) this individual made to the field of psychology. Evaluating the impact of the theory and/or contribution(s) to the field as a whole, identify the strengths and weaknesses of your theorist’s contribution(s).

Choose one contemporary issue or problem that is prevalent in today’s news and research a minimum of one peer-reviewed article on this issue in the Ashford University Library. Evaluate the issue from your chosen school of thought and your theorist’s perspective. Explain how the theory provides a deeper understanding of and insight into the conditions and behaviors related to the contemporary issue. Evaluate contemporary applications of psychological theory to the issue. Support your evaluation of the news piece with your peer-reviewed research on the topic.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmate’s posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful and interactive discourse in this discussion.

Were there any contributions to the field of psychology by your colleagues’ chosen theorist that were not included in his or her initial post? How might these contributions have provided more insight into the contemporary issue being considered? Critically examine and reconcile any discrepancies between your classmate’s perspective(s) and the research he or she cited. Suggest a different theoretical perspective that might align more easily with the contemporary issue identified by your colleague. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. MST on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Social Facilitation, Social Inhibition, and Social Loafing

As you may recall in the work of Triplett (1898), the presence of others in a bicycle race was found to enhance individual performance. This is called social facilitation (Williams, Harkins, & Karau, 2007). At times, however, the presence of others can detract from individual performance, which is termed social inhibition (Crisp & Turner, 2007). Similarly, social loafing can occur when an individual’s performance within a group decreases due to his or her reliance on others in the group (Crisp & Turner, 2007).

For this Discussion, review the media program, Week 5: The Virtual Office. Focus on the characters in the media and determine which characters displayed social facilitation, social inhibition, and social loafing.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a description of the characters in the media program demonstrating social loafing, social inhibition, and social facilitation. Explain how you identified them. Then, select one of the characters and, using the current literature, explain two ways you might mitigate their behavior.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 5 to your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

Click on the Reply button below to reveal the textbox for entering your message. Then click on the Submit button to post your message.

as discussed

Purpose: To provide you with an opportunity to experience a group setting and analyze how the presence of others substantially influences the behaviors of its members through social facilitation.

Observe a group discussing a topic of interest, such as a focus group, a community public assembly, a department meeting at your workplace, or local support group.

Study how the group members interact and influence one another.

Analyze how the group behaviors and communication patterns influence social facilitation.

Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, the course text, and additional scholarly sources. The literature should be about group patterns, not about the content of the meeting.

Process: You will participate as a guest at an interest group meeting in your community to gather data for a qualitative research paper. Once you have located an interest group, contact stakeholders, and explain the purpose of your inquiry. After you receive permission to participate, you will schedule a date to attend the meeting; at which time you will observe the members and document the following for your analysis:

·       How were the people arranged in the physical environment (layout of room and seating arrangement)?

·       What is the composition of the group, in terms of number of people, age, sex, ethnicity, and so on?

·       What are the group’s purpose, mission, and goals?

·       What is the duration of the group (short- or long-term)? Explain.

·       Did the group structure its discussion around an agenda, program, or rules of order?

·       Describe the structure of the group. How is the group organized?

·       Who are the primary facilitators of the group?

·       What subject or issues did the group members examine during the meeting?

·       What types of information did members exchange in their group?

·       What were the group’s norms, roles, status hierarchy, or communication patterns?

·       What communication patterns illustrated if the group was unified or fragmented? Explain.

·       Did the members share a sense of identity with one another (characteristics of the group, similarities, interests, philosophy, and so on)?

·       Was there any indication that members might be vulnerable to groupthink? Why or why not?

·       In your opinion, how did the collective group behaviors influence individual attitudes and the group’s effectiveness? Provide your overall analysis.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper incorporating your analysis with evidence to substantiate your conclusion.

pRIVATE QUESTION

Are you FOR or AGAINST Cartesian Dualism?

Descartes’ (Cartesian) Metaphysics: DUALISM

METAPHYSICS Debate Question: What is the nature of reality?

God = Infinite Immaterial Substance; transcendent, teleological substance.

Mind (Soul)

Body (brain)

Immaterial/Transcendent: No extension in time and space; transcendent

Material: Extended in time and space; measureable objectively

Consciousness

Matter in motion, governed by the laws of nature, e.g. physics, biology, etc.

Free will (thinking, affirming, denying)

Mechanism (Determinism)

Terminology: for Descartes, Soul = Mind =

Transcendent Substance

Select an opponent for dualism from these philosophical alternatives:

Darwin & Dennett

Monism

Sartre’s Existentialism

Nihilism

Instructions: Write a one page essay in which you: Single space

  1. State your thesis for or against Cartesian dualism.
  2. Select (and include in your thesis statement) an opponent for Cartesian dualism: either Darwinian monism OR existentialist nihilism.
  3. Clarify the basis/criteria of your argument, e.g. logical, rational, parsimonious, common-sensical, etc.

EXAMPLE: “In this paper I will argue Cartesian dualism offers a more parsimonious explanation of reality than Darwinian monism.”

  1. Make an argument for your position and support it with an original analogy, e.g. reality is like a machine, e.g. clock or computer; or, mind/body relation is like a captain steering the ship.
  2. Consider and refute your opposition, including a critique of their analogy.
  3. Use only textual sources assigned in this course in the composition of your essay. Indicate the pages numbers, e.g. (23) for all references to text.

Reminders:

  • DO NOT USE ANY PHILOSOPHICAL SOURCES IN YOUR PAPER OTHER THAN THOSE ASSIGNED. This is not a research paper.
  • One page limit means keep it on one side of one piece of paper with standard margins. Everyone strive to respect this length limitation as an invitation to be concise, on point, towards an end-in view.

Please read everything very carefully, make sure you understand what you going to write.
