This task taken

Topic: Androids and the Mind/Body Problem

Note: In order to complete this assignment, you need to have read the Group Discussion Board Forum 1 Instructions, the Star Trek episode synopsis found in the Module/Week 3 Reading & Study folder, and chapter 3 of the Hasker textbook. You also need to have viewed the video presentation “The Mind/Body Problem” and the PointeCast presentation “Proposed Solutions to the Mind/Body Problem.” If you have not done so, stop now to read and view that material.

For your thread: After reading the synopsis (or viewing the episode), write a substantive response (at least 350 words) and post it in the forum. Your thread must address the first question below. You may also address several of the other questions, but the bulk of your response must be on the first question and relating the story to chapter 3 of the Hasker textbook as well as both the video presentation “The Mind/Body Problem” and the PointeCast presentation “Proposed Solutions to the Mind/Body Problem.” Any quotes from sources must be cited and will not count towards your word count.

  • From your reading of Hasker, and using the categories he uses, what view of the mind/body problem do you think is exhibited by Picard? By Maddox? Support your answer.
  • Maddox lists 3 criteria for a being to be sentient: intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. Are these adequate? Can you think of other properties or characteristics a being needs to have in order to be considered a “person”? What might they be?
  • Do you think that artificial intelligence to the level as it is presented in the story will someday be possible? Why or why not?
  • Do you think Maddox is right when he claims that Picard is being “irrational and emotional” in his view of Data?
  • Do you agree with the JAG officer’s final ruling? Why or why not?
  • If A.I. does become possible, will we have obligations to treat machines “ethically”?

WK4 DB2 response 1 (75 words)

Discuss the causes of conflict and cooperation at the local, national, transnational, and global levels surrounding the issues discussed in the film.

The cause of conflict that is surrounding the issues discussed in the film, is ultimately contamination. Texaco and Ecuador are in a legal battle or trial as to who is to blame for the contamination in Ecuador. Texaco the defendants, claim it is not their fault and puts the blame on a local company in Ecuador named PetroEcuador as Ecuador the plaintiffs and their community is claiming it is their fault completely. According to a local, both of his children died due to the contamination. One child stopped developing six months after birth as the other child bathed and drank in the contaminated water which caused his untimely death. Along with this information the Ecuadorian people also believe the contaminated water is the cause of their skin issues and cancer. In the arguments there is simply one side in the conflict that is claiming it is poor sanitation resources available as well and another side claiming the blame game.

◦Discuss the effects of conflict and cooperation at the local, national, transnational, and global levels surrounding the issues discussed in the film.

After hearing testimonies from both Chevron and Ecuador, the judge ordered an end to the judicial inspections and appoints an independent expert to assess the validity of the plaintiff’s claims. The procedure was called “Global Assessment”. The purpose of this is to quantify the damage and establish the cost of what it would take to repair the damages. The independent expert’s damage assessment report that was 4,000 pages long recommended that Chevron pay up to $27 billion in damages. The report recommended compensation or environmental remediation on excess cancer deaths, impacts on indigenous culture, and Texaco’s “unjust enrichment” from its operations. Two weeks after being interviewed for the film Chevron attorney Ricardo Veiga was indicted for fraud by the Ecuadorean government over the remediation process. Seven former government officials were also charged. Along with this, Trudie Styler and the famous band Sting’s Rainforest Foundation teamed up with UNICEF and the Amazon Defense Front to provide filtered drinking water to the affected region.

◦Describe the political behavior, human rights, and environmental justice issues revealed in the film.

Unable to see any evidence of hydrocarbons on the ground’s surface, why? Because it has been buried in the ground. It is said to be migrated into a stream ten meters away which affects the human population with diseases like cancer and skin issues. The human rights issue that were revealed in the film were the people of Ecuador not knowing what legal actions they were able to take in the situation of contaminated water.

Homework for synco_solutions

Developmental Psychology Literature Review

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct: Including 2010 Amendments and read the required Baltes (1987) article.

In this assignment you will choose five general topics of interest to you within the field of developmental psychology from the list below.

  • Prenatal development
  • Infant care
  • Attachment
  • Child development
  • Adolescence
  • Adulthood
  • Gerontology/Aging
  • Language development
  • Parenting
  • Relationships
  • Education
  • Physical development
  • Cognitive development
  • Psychosocial development

For each of your five chosen topics, research a peer-reviewed article in the Ashford University Library that was published within the last 10 years.

You will utilize your chosen articles to explain human development in the context of current trends within the selected topic. Critically evaluate the scholarly perspectives presented in the articles by describing strengths, limitations, inaccuracies or lack of clarity, and any remaining questions. Provide an analysis of ethical considerations in the research addressing the sample and methodology used. Apply the developmental theory presented in Baltes’s set of six principles that define our understanding of human development (lifelong, multidimensional, multidirectional, gains and losses, contextual and historical, and multidisciplinary) through a synthesis of the information from your chosen articles. The review should be formatted with the headings and content designated below.

Introduction

Begin with an introduction that briefly describes your topics, chosen articles, and the principle of development from Baltes (1987) to be addressed. The introduction should end with a succinct thesis statement that presents the idea of how each unique topic within developmental psychology can be applied to your chosen principle of development.

Summary and Critical Evaluation

In this section, you will summarize each article by highlighting the purpose, research questions and hypotheses, methods, results, and conclusions drawn regarding the topic the article represents. Then, evaluate the merits of the article, including the strengths, weakness and limitations, and future directions of the research. Additionally, evaluate whether you had any issues with accuracy or clarity in reading the article, and address any remaining questions you have. Finally, evaluate any ethical considerations that may or may not have been addressed by the authors of the articles.

Synthesis of Principles Defining the Lifespan Development Approach

In this section, you will integrate one of the principles of development which state that development is lifelong, multidimensional, multidirectional, gains and losses, contextual and historical, and/or multidisciplinary (Baltes, 1987). To do so, you will first describe your chosen principle and explain how it can be applied to each of your five topics. Construct clear arguments regarding how your chosen principle drives, and is influenced by key elements presented in the articles.

Conclusion

Synthesize the findings described in your five articles into a succinct conclusion in which you reaffirm your thesis statement and describe how the principle of development discussed in your review influences our understanding of human development across all five chosen topics. Address any remaining questions and overarching implications of the studies with regard to future directions in developmental psychology.

Response 1: Over-Treatment and Under-Treatment of Addiction

  • ·      Respond to a colleague who chose a different example of under-treatment or over-treatment and provide an additional consequence.
  • ·      Use at least 2 references

Colleague 1:  Hayley

Addiction professionals often times help individuals who will consistently deny that they are sick and often refuse medical treatment. Marge demonstrates these characteristics. She denies that she has an issue at first and places blame on her loved ones. An example of over treatment would be when the counselor keeps asking Marge “why” she is in treatment. This could cause Marge to lash out and even shut down; clearly this has been established already (Doweiko, 2015). Marge exhibited resentment and denial initially but eventually admitted that the intervention is what made her realize she has an issue (Laureate Education, 2012). Under treatment is trying to force Marge into thinking that God or some other spiritual guide is needed in order to have a successful recovery. This is not correct. Marge needs tools to help her be successful but not everyone believes in God or has a religious background. Because Marge feels like she cannot connect to God, this creates a level of guilt and feelings of unworthiness. This can create even more guilt, Marge could start to identify with the statement if only I could stop sinning; I could stop drinking or if I could connect to God or a higher power maybe then I can start recovery. This is an example of over-treatment and shines a light on the problem and increases guilt (Mee-Lee & Gastfriend, 2015). The counselor is not being culturally competent nor are they separating their personal beliefs from their professional obligation. To mitigate the potential for over-treating or under-treating client it is important to ensure that all addiction treatment entities are capable of providing adequate and appropriate services. They should be client focused and therapeutic sound. Focusing on all the client’s issues and not just the addiction.

Ashford 2: – Week 1 – Discussion

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.

Biomes and Diversity

Before completing your post, review the Week 1: Biomes & Diversity interactive video, which is designed to assist you in understanding more about this week’s topic and to help you organize your initial post.  Also, watch the video “Choosing Articles and Revising Searches,” which defines the difference between scholarly, reputable, and non-reputable resources.

As you have learned in the readings, extinction is a natural selection process and humans are often responsible for accelerating this process. In your initial post this week, address whether or not we as humans should be concerned with the extinction rate, and justify your decision. Additionally, discuss whether or not humans should strive to preserve reprtative samples of all biomes on the planet, and if so, how that might be accomplished.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Utilize at least two scholarly or reputable resources and your textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources in APA format. Quoted text should constitute no more than ten percent of your post.  Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

While all major developmental theories attempt to explain the growth of individuals, each theory has a slightly different perspective. Some theories emphasize environmental (nurture) more than biological (nature) influences. Some theories focus on a particular construct (e.g., cognition), while others emphasize the impact of age range in shaping development. Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory emphasizes fixed stages during which the mind’s capacities allow an individual to learn about the world. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on the other hand, is not stage-based and describes growth as an interaction between the individual and his or her environment.

Contemporary theories (e.g., Langer’s theory of mindfulness) typically build upon the foundation generated by earlier theories. Langer’s theory of mindfulness contains similarities to classical theories, such as Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, in that they both agree that development is contextual and the organism is an active “mindful” participant. Langer took Vygotsky’s theory to a new level, focusing specifically on education and the learner. Other contemporary theories include neo-Piagetian cognitive developmental theories, which attempt to address the limitations found within Piaget’s classical theory. Robbie Case, Andreas Demetriou, and Kurt Fischer proposed theories that were extensions of Piaget’s theory. These theorists added concepts that expanded on cognitive functioning within the stages of development. Most developmental psychologists today do not believe that a single perspective or theory can sufficiently explain lifespan development; rather, an eclectic approach accounts for development better.

For this Discussion, you will examine classical and contemporary developmental theories as they relate to current applications in developmental psychology.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the course text and other Learning Resources related to mid-20th-century theories and recent theoretical perspectives
  • Select two theories from the following list, one from each column (classical, contemporary), that examine the same developmental processes (i.e., cognitive, physical, and/or social-emotional).
Classical Theories Contemporary Theories
  • Psychoanalytic/Psychosexual
  • Psychosocial
  • Behaviorism/Learning
  • Social Learning
  • Cognitive-Developmental
  • Information Processing
  • Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Ethology/Evolutionary Developmental
  • Sociocultural
  • Systems Theory

By Day 4

Post a brief description of the two theories you selected (one classical and one contemporary). Contrast the theories you selected. Specifically, identify important similarities and differences, including an explanation of the strengths and limitations of each theory in explaining developmental processes (i.e., cognitive, physical, and social-emotional). Note: Your descriptions should be in paragraph form, not bullet points. Use your Learning Resources and/or other scholarly sources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations.

By Day 6

Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ posts and search the Internet and/or the Walden Library and select a current article (within the last 5 years) that is related to the same developmental process (i.e., cognitive, physical, and social-emotional) that your colleague posted. Summarize the article and describe the theory identified within the article.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting and answer any questions. Note what you have learned and/or any insights that you have gained as a result of your colleagues’ comments.

Week 3 Discussion Rubric

2nd Behavior Therapy and Cognitive behavior Therapy

I only need 2 to 3 lines and reference on this discussion below

G Edwards

1.      Using operant conditioning principles, how might you structure a behavioral approach to working with Ethan in a way that directly addresses his problematic behaviors?  What techniques would you use? Be specific and explain your rationale thoroughly. It’s clear that Ethan enjoys receiving rewards as he likes to get what he wants. To address his problematic behaviors, I would create a behavioral chart that would display his problematic behaviors. Each time he conducts the behavior, he would receive a tally mark. If he has a certain amount of marks by the end of the day, he will not be able to receive a reward. This method teaches him that he has to earn what he wants and to teach Ethan that certain behaviors will not be tolerated

2. As a result of your intervention, as mentioned in question 1, what specific behavioral changes might you expect in Ethan as a result of employing these techniques? Again, be specific and detailed in your response. The specific behavioral changes I would expect to see is Ethan displaying more positive behaviors if he would like to receive a reward. This technique would show Ethan that if he wants anything he has to behave in a manner is appropriate. This will also teach Ethan that negative behaviors do not contribute to receiving rewards.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

3.  Using the rational-emotive behavior approach to therapy, apply the A-B-C method mentioned in the course lecture notes to either a real life situation that you have experienced or create a scenario to illustrate how the realization of beliefs influence the consequences of behavior. Be sure to clearly label each component (A)ctivating event, (B)elief, and (C)onsequence in your example to show how they relate and the progression of the behaviors.  Then take the ABC model full circle and include the (D)isputing and the (E)ffect of the  disputing process. Clearly explain in detail how each step in the ABCDE process is playing out in your scenario.

Activating Event: I could not trust a woman due to past relationship experiences

Belief: Remain single because happiness only exist in fairy tales

Consequence: Kept myself isolated and not allowed anyone to be a part of my life

Disputing: I made a decision to try to be in a relationship again because I did not want depression or loneliness to be a part of my life

Effect of Disputing: I am now married to a beautiful woman who has given me 3 daughters and I have been happy since we first got married

I chose the “Hijacked Brain” to look at alcoholism

The dictionary defines a disease as a disordered or incorrectly functioning part or structure of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental imbalances (Oxford Dictionary). The same dictionary defines addiction as a state of enslavement to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma (Oxford Dictionary). In my opinion and according to definition(s), alcoholism is both an addiction and a disease process.  The addiction process becomes evident when an individual cannot control the amount or how often they drink, and when they do not drink they become ill. People drink to socialize and celebrate all the time, but many individual do not know when they have had enough while others can have 1 or 2 and say that’s enough.  So the question is what separates these individuals? Is it just self-control or does it go much deeper than that?

I believe that no one is born an addict, unless the mother was using drugs while pregnant which passed that addiction to the fetus, but the pleasure centers in the brain work differently for individuals that are prone to addiction, making that individual more vulnerable to losing control. I am not saying that everyone who is “wired” differently will become an alcoholic or an addict, just that they have a much higher risk of becoming one.  Research reveals that it stems from these abnormalities in brain functioning that leads to irrational behavior, and therefore alcoholism should be categorized as a disease rather than an addiction. This abnormality can be a trigger for many abnormal behaviors such as a gambling addiction, obsessive compulsive disorders, etc. The addiction and disease process that follows stems from what the trigger is. Maybe gambling activates this “feel good center” or maybe they have an uncontrollable need that they must wash their hands or some other ritual that satisfies this uncontrollable need.  For instance, many individuals realize that they are drinking too much, or that is causing problems at home, and may even be affecting their employment, but can’t seem to control the drinking, regardless of the consequences. As with many other drugs,a tolerance is built up to alcohol and more and more is required to achieve the same effect. The increased amount of alcohol consumed then causes a dependency (just like with narcotics) that must be maintained or the person gets very ill from withdrawal. It seems to have a domino effect in a way in that the first drink triggers something that is very pleasurable in the brain and once this is triggered, consumption continues until dependency occurs. A direct quote from our assignment “The Hijacked Brain” reveals “It’s a disease because it’s a result, actually, of drugs changing the brain in fundamental and long-lasting ways. And it’s a chronic, relapsing disease because typically — sadly, but typically — people don’t have only one episode of addiction, they have repeat episodes. Addiction is not a voluntary circumstance. It’s not a voluntary behavior. It’s not just a lot of drug use. It’s actually a different state”(Leshner, 1998).

Furthermore, since many professionals do not recognize alcoholism as a disease, treatment is extremely hard to be effective.  There are medications like Antabuse that will make the individual very sick if the drink, but just because this form of deterrent is prescribed, does not mean that the individual will take the medication. In my opinion, there is truly no treatment for alcoholism other than total abstinence from any alcoholic substance.  Although it is a fact that the initial decision to take the first drink lies directly on the individual, it is the rapid effect that follows that causes alcoholism. Because alcohol is legal, many just this process as a social problem of those that are weak and have no control.  In my opinion, this is not the case. I believe that addiction is a disease and since alcohol is an addiction that wreaks havoc on an individual and their family members it should also be classified as a disease process. My question to the class is if you classify alcoholism as a disease then do you also remove the personal responsibility from the individual since they are “sick” and cannot control them self?
