(Part 3)  Journal Article Assignment

 (Please Read Very Carefully)

For this Journal Article Assignment, you will identify a published research article either in the print literature or online in the Capella Library. Your article must be based on empirical (data-based) research; qualitative or purely descriptive research is not appropriate. Select a journal article in your career specialization that reports either a correlation, a t test, or a one-way ANOVA (or some combination of these test statistics). The library guides listed in the Resources area can help you to locate appropriate articles. The intent of this Journal Article Assignment is to:

—Expose you to professional literature in your discipline.

—Provide practice in the interpretation of statistical results contained in an empirical (data-based) journal article.

—Provide practice in writing and thinking in a concise and economical manner that is typical of scientific discourse.

Summarize the article in a maximum of 600 words using the DAA Template document located in the Resources area. Specific instructions for completing each section of the DAA Template are listed below.

You may use some of the author’s own words to summarize the article, but avoid lengthy direct quotes (e.g., copying multiple sentences or paragraphs verbatim). You should not exceed the limit of 600 words. This is a situation where more is not better.

—Step 1: Write Section 1 of the DAA

Provide a context of the journal article.

Include a definition of the specified variables (predictor, outcome) and corresponding scales of measurement.

Specify the sample size of the data set.

Discuss why the journal article is relevant to your career specialization.

—Step 2: Write Section 2 of the DAA

Discuss the assumptions of the statistical test used in the journal article.

If possible, identify information in the article that provides information on how these assumptions were tested.

If no information on assumptions is provided, consider this as a limitation of the reported study.

—Step 3: Write Section 3 of the DAA

Specify a research question related to the journal article.

Articulate the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis.

Specify the alpha level if it is provided in the article.

—-Step 4: Write Section 4 of the DAA

Report the results of the statistical test using proper APA guidelines. This includes:

The statistical notation (e.g., r, t, or F).

The degrees of freedom.

The statistical value of r, t, or F, and the p value.

Also report the effect size and interpretation it if one is provided.

Interpret the test statistic against the null hypothesis.

—-Step 5: Write Section 5 of the DAA

Discuss the conclusions of the statistical test as it relates to the research question.

—-Conclude with an analysis of the strengths and limitations of the study reported in the journal article.

(Part 4) One-Way ANOVA

As with your previous assignments, you will complete this with the DAA Template. Links to additional resources are available in the Resources area. Reminder: The format of this SPSS assignment should be narrative with supporting statistical output (table and graphs) integrated into the narrative in the appropriate place (not all at the end of the document).

You will analyze the following variables in the grades.sav data set: section, quiz3.

—-/Step 1: Write Section 1 of the DAA

Provide a context of the grades.sav data set.

Include a definition of the specified variables (predictor, outcome) and corresponding scales of measurement.

Specify the sample size of the data set.

—–Step 2: Write Section 2 of the DAA

Analyze the assumptions of the one-way ANOVA.

Paste the SPSS histogram output for quiz3 and discuss your visual interpretations.

Paste SPSS descriptives output showing skewness and kurtosis values for quiz3 and interpret them.

Paste SPSS output for the Shapiro-Wilk test of quiz3 and interpret it.

Report the results of the Levene test and interpret it.

Summarize whether or not the assumptions of the one-way ANOVA are met.

—-Step 3: Write Section 3 of the DAA

Specify a research question related to the one-way ANOVA.

Articulate the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis.

Specify the alpha level.

—-Step 4: Write Section 4 of the DAA

Begin by pasting SPSS output of the means plot and providing an interpretation.

Also report the means and standard deviations of quiz3 for each level of section.

Next, paste the SPSS ANOVA output and report the results of the F test, including:

Degrees of freedom.

F value.

p value.

Calculated effect size.

Interpretation of the effect size.

Finally, if the omnibus F is significant, provide the SPSS post-hoc (Tukey HSD) output.

Interpret the post-hoc tests.

—-Step 5: Write Section 5 of the DAA

Discuss the conclusions of the one-way ANOVA as it relates to the research question.

Conclude with an analysis of the strengths and limitations of one-way ANOVA.

Walter Fisher’s (1984, 1987) narrative paradigm theory, for example, uses structuralist constructs of narrative rationality and coherence (fidelity and probability) to a priori decide which are good or bad stories.”

Fisher (1984, 1987) argues that humans are storytelling animals, communicating through their stories, and that they construct “good reasons” for believing and acting upon some stories, while rejecting others. The reasons for accepting or rejecting a story come from logical and value-based reasoning (Fisher, 1984).

Key concepts in narrative paradigm theory are a narrative’s “probability” and “fidelity” (1987: 5).

  • Probability is the spectator’s evaluation of a story’s coherence; “does it hang together?” “Does it ring true?” Probability addresses a story’s credibility by analyzing internal consistency, missing elements, and the consistency of character behavior given what the spectators know of the storyteller or character in similar stories.
  • Fidelity analyzes the truthfulness of a story “does it ring true to other stories of the same type?” “Does it pass the spectator’s tests of rational and value laden reasons?” Fidelity gazes the story’s rational reasons (in rational argumentation theory) and assesses its value laden “good reasons” (in terms of ethics and validity or soundness,[Formist: Narratology David Boje, June 30, 1999–http://cbae.nmsu.edu/~dboje/formists.html

With the Narrative Paradigm Theory perspective in mind, we will begin with a video by George Gerbner, one of the most preeminent communication researchers of the past century. He was Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication for many years. He takes a Narrative Paradigm perspective on communication, emphasizing the importance of story telling for human experience, and explores the implications of the current mass media system on the way in which individuals view the world.

In what ways does Dr. Gerbner think that casting and the emphasis on violence affect our society’s ways of thinking about crime policy, welfare policy, and civil rights? 2. Do you think Dr. Gerbner’s studies give television too much or not enough credit for shaping the way we think about ourselves and the world?

Discussion—Random Selection

I need a response to this discussion and a question.

N Downs

In a random sampling, the population sample is drawn completely by chance without any discernable pattern or order (Argosy, 2014). In order to randomly select files, the researchers could number all of the files and then use a random number generator to select which files would be used (Argosy, 2014). It is also possible that the researchers could place all the files in a pile and just grab files for use without doing so in a pattern or for any other distinct reason. It is best to use a random number generator however as it ensures there were no underlying or unintentional pattern to gathering the files (Argosy, 2014).

The probability that the next file picked would be:

A)    Mental Health – 0.5 or 50%

Take the total number of mental health files currently pulled and divide it by the total number of files pulled: 25/50 = 0.5 or 50%

B)    Learning/School or Relationship issues – 0.4 or 40%

Take the total number of learning/school files currently pulled and divide it by the total number of files pulled: 15/50 = 0.3 or 30%. Next, take the total number of relationship files pulled and divide it by the total number of files pulled: 5/50 = 0.1 or 10%. Next, add the probability of the learning/school files and the relationship files: 0.3+0.1 = 0.4 or 40%

C)    Any Category Except Other – 0.9 or 90%

This can be done 2 different ways. The first way, since we already have the probability of all the other categories is to simply add them: 0.5+0.3+0.1 = 0.9 or 90%. The second way would be to determine the probability of the other category 5/50 = 0.1 or 10%, and then subtracting the 0.1 or 10% from the whole: 1-0.1 = .9 or 100%-10% = 90%.

If convenience sampling was used instead of random sampling, our probabilities and results would be different. Random sampling gives a more complete representation of the population whereas convenience sampling can only achieve a gross estimate as the sample is taken from the populace the researcher has the easiest access to rather than the whole populace (Argosy, 2014).

Client:

The most difficult client I’ve ever worked with was a mother of 4 children, which she conceived all 4 through rape or unwanted sexual partners. She was diagnosed with depression, and social phobia. When I first met her for her assessment, she would not come out of her room. She was court ordered, and sent for any evaluation. Well I finally convinced  her to come sit at the table with me, so I could complete her assessment packet. She was running from her past, which consisted of  a long history of verbal, physical and sexual abuse. She disclosed to me that her sons had been sexually assaulted by an older male whom they lived with for more than five years. She stated how she walked in on them one night and heard the sounds coming from the room, but she simply closed the door and walked to her room.

My Values:

In that moment I was so taken aback. As the mother of a 14 and 6 year old  daughter, I could not phantom how any mother could do this to their own child. Not once, but for 5 years. This goes against everything I value. A child is suppose to be protected, loved, and care for. Not treated like some animal or like a piece of meat.

The Issues:

My heart was broken. I was beyond conflicted; I was baffled, heartbroken, angry, sad and shocked to the least. In that moment, I could not hear anything else she had to say . However, I knew that I could not scar this woman by forcing my thoughts and my judgment on her. I did not want this lady to turn away from help, because I was placed in a situation that was overwhelming for me

Handling the Situation:
How I handle the situation? I got on the phone, and called my auntie who’s a LPC, and I knew who would display the same type of values and expression as I did. However, she had something I did not have and that was experience and wisdom.  What said was told was Dee that’s what she called me. As a therapist you cannot expect people to have the same understanding, and values as you. If they did they probably would not need help. That by far was the best piece of advice I have ever received. It changed my perspective on what I do , and taking by far  this journey to becoming an LPC.

Issue Facing Beginning Counselors:

The issue facing as I began this journey to becoming a counselors would be me trying not to be so judgmental. I have to realize that everyone values and views aren’t the same as mines. I would have to work on my facial expression, because a lot of time people have told me that when something is being said to me, and I don’t agree I tend to make an unpleasant face. Another issue would be dealing with demanding and aggressive clients. Being were I was raised and brought up my attitude does not handle disrespectful people, so when things like this occurs I’ll have to remember why the client is seeking counseling. I  have a lot of patient, but becoming aggressive and disrespectful is one thing I don’t tolerate to well. I’ve been known to be the most outspoken one, and not sugar coating anything.

Multi-Cultural Counseling reply post – Due by 8pm today

Reply to this post using apa format.
onr to two paragraphs
Multi-cultural Counseling is made up of six fundamental concepts. These include culture, cultural differences, cross-cultural, human diversity, culturally diverse backgrounds, and globally diverse. Culture can be defined in various ways, ethnographically being ethnicity, nationality, religion, and language. Demographically, culture involves age, gender, place of residence, etc (Newsome 2014). An example of cultural differences would be whether an individual identifies themselves according to physical characteristics shared, or if shared history or beliefs are shared between various individuals. For example, an African American female can identify herself as following traditional Jewish beliefs. All counseling can be considered cross-cultural, and the term “multi-cultural” has various interpretations. Rage, ethnicity, gender, etc are all differences taken into consideration when dealing with multi-cultural counseling (Newsome 2014). Since everyone is unique in their own special way when it comes to cultural experiences, multi-cultural counseling used the etic and emic approach. Etic principle emphasizes qualities at a universal standpoint, that are culturally generalized. Emic, on the other hand, focuses on characteristics of each individual cultural group and is more specific, personal and in-depth. Both approaches have been criticized and not either is more efficient than the other, but the most effective approach has been combining both approaches and focusing on universal and specific cultural characteristics (Newsome 2014). In order to succeed in the field of multi-cultural counseling, one must be open to working with individuals who come from various cultural backgrounds, especially those different from their own. Discrimination is looked down upon in the counseling field, and everyones perspective and beliefs must be acknowledged in order to better understand the differences. No specific theory is valid for every cultural perspective, so being open to differences is crucial.
