Psychology – Application Scenario

Application Scenario 1

Angie woke up Saturday morning in the mood for donuts. She decided to treat herself to Krispy Kreme after having worked hard all week. As she drove the restaurant, she thought about what kind of donut she would havewould it be cream filled, jelly donut, coconut covered or blueberry cake? Once she arrived, she couldnt make a decision about which kind of donut to choose. She decided to order a dozen, consisting of all of her favorites. After all, she could eat some of them tomorrow morning and perhaps the next morning as well. Once she got the donuts home, she couldnt decide which to eat. So, she ate the coconut covered, then the cream filled. She then decided to eat the jelly filled as well. After a while she had eaten the entire box of donuts. Although she enjoyed eating all of the donuts, she felt sick afterwards and not just sick at her stomach. She knew she shouldnt have eaten a dozen donuts by herself. She was extreme guilt and disgusted with herself because she knew that this was not the first time. No, this happens often. Whenever it happens, she tell herself that this will be the last time. But, it never is

This is a team assignment. My part is the intro, conclusion, and graphs. I poste the other team memebers parts to help and the instructions.

Determine what these indicators are for each state and gender within your Learning Team.

Create a visual representation of each culture using graphs in Microsoft® Word, Excel®, or another program. You can view some examples of visual representations in the following resource:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Consider what factors may contribute to the differences found in your results.

Discuss these results in 500 to 750 words. APA

DON:

Florida- African-American (75.8)

              Caucasian (79.1)

              Latino (83.1)

New York- African-American (77.4)

                   Caucasian (80.5)

                    Latino (83.5)

There are several different factors that contribute in the life expectancy of African-Americans, Caucasians, and Latinos. Out of these three cultures the Latino culture lives the longest in the states of Florida and New York. The factors that made the African-American life expectancy different from Caucasians and Latinos in New York and Florida were several reasons. Heart disease, homicide, cancer, stroke, and prenatal conditions are some factors that determine why African-Americans have a shorter life expectancy than Caucasians and Latinos. Sickle cell anemia is another factor which is more common in African-Americans than any other race. The factors that were related to the life span of Caucasians were due to suicide, unintentional injuries, chronic liver disease, Chronic lower respiratory and Parkinson’s disease. Also, Latinos live longer out of the three, but spend their latter years disabled because of the types of physical jobs they choose. They are far healthier than Caucasians and African-Americans in the earlier years of their life, but the physical toll of manual labor affects their body years later.

For this activity, watch the video: Psychodynamic Case Scenario.http://extmedia.kaplan.edu/artsSCi/Media/PS380/PS380_1404C/PS380_TD_Scenario1/PS380_TD_Scenario1.html Use the information in the scenario to answer the following questions:

  • To what extent does Mallory’s behavior in this interview exemplify transference (see Chapter 12)?
  • To what extent does Dr. Santos’ behavior during the session influence your judgment regarding Mallory’s behavior as transference?
  • If it is transference, what, exactly, is Mallory transferring? From whom, might you speculate, is she transferring it?
  • If it is transference, and Dr. Santos is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, what is an ideal way for Dr. Santos to handle it? What if Dr. Santos was a humanistic psychotherapist, would she handle this situation differently?
  • Describe several of the defense mechanisms. (Please select several that have not all been described already by other students if possible.) Do any of those you described seem to be applicable to Mallory? How so?

The Positive Purposes of Arguments

The Positive Purposes of Arguments

In preparing for this discussion, you took part in an interactive scenario called “The Graduate.” In the scenario, you got to experience different people presenting different arguments (some of which you may not have liked). We have learned a lot in this course about the meaning of an argument and what constitutes a good argument. This discussion allows us to discuss more positive things that we can learn from “arguing” in the right way.

Prepare: To prepare for this discussion, watch the following video from Daniel H. Cohen [Link here to http://www.ted.com/talks/daniel_h_cohen_for_argument_s_sake.html] and review section 9.4 of Chapter 9 called “Confronting Disagreement by Seeking Truth.”  Take a look as well at the required resources from this week and make sure that you have completed “The Graduate” interactive scenario.

Reflect: Think about experiences you have had that involved conflicts with others. What was the genesis of the conflict? Would it have been possible for the exchange to be more productive? Think about why disagreements often lead to fights rather than opportunities to learn from each other.

Write: Answer the following questions: What is an area of life in which you have experienced people treating arguments as a kind of war? What were the consequences of that approach? What is an area of life in which you have experienced people treating arguments as a kind of performance? Was that approach effective? Why is it better to treat arguments as a venue for learning? What traits of character does it require to be able to live according to that approach? What benefits can it have in our lives to take that approach? (please give a specific example)

Family Therapy Case Study

Family Therapy Case Study

For this activity, watch the video: Family Therapy Case Study. Use the information in the scenario to answer the following questions:

Inez and Joseph are a married couple with a 7-year-old son, Leo. Leo is in second grade, but Leo has been refusing to go to school for several weeks. Sometimes, Inez and Joseph are able to coax or force him to go to school, but other times, he stays home the entire day. Almost every school-day morning begins with Leo refusing to get dressed to go to school. Inez and Joseph have been unable to overcome this refusal, and if they try to dress him themselves, he squirms, runs out of the room, cries, and screams. Leo’s behavior has caused significant strain on the marriage. Inez and Joseph frequently and intensely argue about the ideal way to handle Leo. Generally, Inez is more sympathetic and concerned about exploring underlying roots of his behavior, whereas Joseph prefers to make hard-and-fast rules or demands that will force Leo to behave more appropriately regarding of any underlying causes. There is significantly more hostility and less warmth in the home since Leo began this behavior, and Inez and Joseph are concerned that the problem is not improving. They seek the help of Dr. Gollum, a clinical psychologist who practices family therapy.

  • Which approach to family therapy would be ideal for this family (e.g., structural, solution-focused, Bowenian)? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.
  • Is family therapy preferable to other options, such as individual therapy for Leo or parent training for Inez and Joseph? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.
  • What would be the most valid measure of psychotherapy outcome for this case? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.

Cite your textbook and online source(s) according to APA format. Be sure to include both an in-text citation for each scholarly source, and also a complete reference citation at the end of your post or paper. You will find a review of how to cite your scholarly sources using APA format in “APA Quick Reference” under Course Home .

I need a response and question for this discussion:

T Olmedo

To say the files were randomly selected means, that they were not predetermined to be selected. So for the researcher to randomly select files, he or she would have to choose them from different files but from the same type of research. The process would look like according to (Heiman G2015), “random chance—the “luck of the draw” of who we happen to select for a sample. Thus, maybe, simply because of who happened to enroll in your statistics class, it contains some very unusual, atypical students who are not at all like those in the population.”
a) The probability of a student file falling in each of the following categories such as mental health probability would be 25/50=0.5
b) The probability of a student file falling in each of the following categories such as learning/school issues or relationship issues probability would be (15+5)/50
c) The probability of a student file falling in each of the following categories such as any category except other probability would be (50-5)/50=45/50=0.9

Probabilities and results would be different if we used convenience sampling. This is because convenience sampling is usually taken from a group that you have easy access to, as in if you are trying to say something about children then your convenient study will not be on men.

Assignment 2: Nature vs. Nurture

Do you think that behavior is due to environmental factors (nurture) or innate tendencies (nature)? Provide an example of a behavioral characteristic and explain how it may have developed through the influence of experience, heredity, or both.

Next, considering Darwin’s principle of natural selection, give two examples of structural or behavioral characteristics that might confer selective advantages to human beings over other animals.

By Saturday, May 7, 2016, post your answers to the Discussion Area, thoroughly explaining your answers and using scholarly references to support your argument. Review and respond to at least three classmates’ discussion posts through Wednesday, May 11, 2016.
