Emotional Intelligence

What is it? What characteristics make up EI? Is it a valid concept? Is it an inborn trait? Can it be taught? How do children learn to express and manage their emotions? Should there be attempts to “teach” EI in schools? Are there any schools with a program for teaching EI? Have there been studies that show a relationship between a measurement of EI and success? Has it been successfully measured? Where are tests of EI currently used? How is the concept of EI used in some corporate or business institutions. Are there critics of EI? Do individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome lack EI? What about bullies? Finding research that attempts to answer these questions will be useful. Don’t attempt to address all of these questions; Choose a few or your own and search for some relevant information. Click on the link below to view a video that is one of the tests of emotional intelligence that has been studied in young children. It is known as the marshmallow test first conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University in the 1960’s. A group of four-year-olds were given a marshmallow and told that they would be given two marshmallows if they did not eat that one. They had to wait for 20 minutes. These children were followed into their adolescent years, and, based on surveys of their parents and teachers, it was determined that the children who waited in order to get the two marshmallows were better adjusted, more dependable, and scored 210 points higher on the SAT.

Report: Prepare a short report (3/4 page single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs) to present your findings and your views of the topic. Summarize your findings in your own words. Do not copy and paste any information from a website or article as this is plagiarism (exception: the URL, which will be used in the reference list). Plagiarism will result in a “0” for the assignment. Your report should be single-spaced with doublespacing between paragraphs. Avoid quotations. Having too many quotations indicates that you did not attempt to explain the information in your own words. Prepare your report in a word document, organize it into paragraphs, and edit it for errors. Organize your ideas by paragraphs and double-space between paragraphs. Re-read and edit your report to make certain your ideas are clearly expressed and that are errors are corrected. It is often helpful to read it aloud or have someone else read it to discover problems. Make sure that all listed references are cited in the report itself and that all information obtained from other sources is cited under “References” at the end of your report.

AP 4 & 5

Application: Developing Your Professional Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

Part 4: Recognizing and Supporting the Unique Ways Children Develop and Learn

This week, you have been studying three people who made key contributions to theories and understandings about how children develop and learn. What do these theories and understandings mean to people who work directly with children and families? How does this knowledge impact the philosophy that you will bring to your work?

Consider what you have learned this week about the work of Piaget, Vygotsky, and Erikson, as well as their perspectives on children, their insights related to child development, and their commitment to lifelong learning.

For this section of your Professional Philosophy of Teaching and Learning:

  1. Summarize your thinking about children’s ability to learn and the relationship between learning and development.

  2. Describe what you believe is the role adults play in fostering development and learning.

  3. As a lifelong learner, identify any questions about children’s learning and development that you hope to learn the answer to as you proceed through this program.

Assignment length: 12 pages

Application: Developing Your Professional Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

Part 5: Expanding My Knowledge and Continuing My Professional Development

A large and ever-growing body of research shows that teacher expertise is what matters most in helping every child develop and learn. Developing your expertise as a professional who works with children and their families is a career-long pursuit and its importance cannot be emphasized enough. You may already have realized that, as in most professions, the more you learn, the more you recognize how much more there is to learn. And the further you move along the “novice-to-expert” development continuum, the more profound your impact will be on the children with whom you work, and the better prepared you will be to collaborate with, support, and learn from families, colleagues, and other professionals. What are the key components to ongoing professional growth? At any point in time, and in any order, the processes of reflection, inquiry, problem solving, and self-assessment are invaluable.

The need for continual professional development is not new. Scholars such as Lilian G. Katz, David Berliner, Linda-Darling Hammond, and Sonia Nieto have researched theories and written articles and books about this vital process. In fact, Lilian G. Katz specifies four stages in teacher professional development—& lt; /font>survival, consolidation, renewal, and maturityin your course text. She underscores that the successful progression from stage to stage is not automatic but requires the completion of specific developmental tasks. And, at each of these stages, professionals are called upon to take part in the processes of reflection, inquiry, problem solving, and self-assessment.

For this section of your Professional Philosophy of Teaching and Learning, summarize your own professional development needs by reflecting on the following question:

  • What have I learned so far in my coursework about what a teacher or anyone who is in a profession that fosters children’s development and learning needs to know? (Reflection)

Then, respond to the following questions:

  • What three essential questions about fostering children’s development and learning do I need to ask at this point in my career? (Inquiry)

  • How will I learn the answers to these questions? (Problem solving)

  • Where am I now in relation to where I want to be in understanding my own professional goals and needs? (Self-assessment)

Assignment

To support your work make sure to utilize your course and text readings. When asked also utilize outside sources as well. As in all assignments make sure to cite your sources in your work and provide a reference for that citation utilizing APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between one or more lines of reasoning in the discussion.

Part 1:

A person’s lifestyle has a significant influence on the person’s health and development as he or she moves into middle age (and old age). Stability and change are also common factors in an adult’s life.

  • Describe how middle adulthood provides stability in a person’s life. Explain some of the factors that would lead to stability in a person’s life as he or she moves through middle age.
  • Describe some of the more common lifestyle issues that have a negative impact on a person’s continued development. Explain how a person may be able to reverse some of the lifestyle influences.
  • On the basis of your readings, describe what is meant by a midlife crisis. Explain why a midlife crisis may or may not be critical.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers, and provide an analysis of each peer’s postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.

Part 2:

Erikson, Helson, and Levinson provide different perspectives on middle age in adulthood.

  • Describe each of these theories as it relates to middle adulthood.
  • On the basis of your readings, compare and contrast these theories. Which one gives a better explanation of middle adulthood?

Psychodynamic Case Scenario

For this activity, watch the video: Psychodynamic Case Scenario. Use the information in the scenario to answer the following questions:

  • To what extent does Mallory’s behavior in this interview exemplify transference (see Chapter 12)?
  • To what extent does Dr. Santos’ behavior during the session influence your judgment regarding Mallory’s behavior as transference?
  • If it is transference, what, exactly, is Mallory transferring? From whom, might you speculate, is she transferring it?
  • If it is transference, and Dr. Santos is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, what is an ideal way for Dr. Santos to handle it? What if Dr. Santos was a humanistic psychotherapist, would she handle this situation differently?
  • Describe several of the defense mechanisms. (Please select several that have not all been described already by other students if possible.) Do any of those you described seem to be applicable to Mallory? How so?

Introduction
During an interview with talk show host Phil Donahue, economist Milton Friedman stated the following:

Is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests. The great achievements of civilization have not come from government bureaus. Einstein did not construct his theory under an order from a bureaucrat. Henry Ford did not revolutionize the automobile industry that way. In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty you are talking about; the only cases in recorded history are where they had capitalism and largely free trade (Friedman, 1979).

Initial Post Instructions
Reflect upon Milton Friedman – Socialism vs. Capitalism (video). For your initial post, address the following:

  • Milton Friedman equated greed with capitalism and regarded the free enterprise system as the most productive economic system in a developed country. Reflect upon Mr. Friedman’s comments:
    • What is greed? Is it greed good or bad?
    • Do you agree with Milton Friedman’s perspective that all societies run on greed?
    • In what way has a capitalistic society allowed you to pursue your interests?
  • Using APA format, provide at least one citation with corresponding references page and use appropriate in-text citation(s) referring to the academic concept for the initial post.  300 words

Unit 6 Learning Activity

I live in Orange, California

Domestic violence, though not an area that is typically thought of as something to be dealt with by the world of clinical psychology, is likely to be a part of many situations in which a clinical psychologist or other related mental health professional may be called to assist those in need. Domestic violence is not simply the result of a bad relationship between two people; relationships of all kinds can be affected by domestic violence. According to the United States Department of Justice (2013), domestic violence is defined as “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power or control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can by physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.” As you can see, that covers most if not all areas of human interaction, areas that most certainly include the world of mental health and as a result the world of clinical psychology.

For this learning activity, conduct a search of the Kaplan library for a “domestic violence assessment tool” and find at least one article that sought to evaluate an instrument of domestic violence assessment. Additionally, conduct a general search of the Internet, and find at least one resource in your area that may either be connected to the findings of the article you located in the library, or a reliable local resource that directly addresses domestic violence prevention or treatment. In at least 250 words, discuss both the findings of the article from the Kaplan library, as well as any local resource or resources that you found concerning domestic violence in your area.

Questions to consider as part of your discussion:

What did you learn about the assessment tool you found? Does it meet the needs of its intended target, with regard to both those who administer the test, as well as those it is intended to serve? Are there any cultural or gender biases that should be taken into consideration with regard to either the administration or application of the tool? If so, what are they?

With regard to the local resources you found, what services are provided? Do they provide services for both perpetrators and victims of domestic violence? Are the services being provided meeting the needs of those they are attempting to serve?

Unit 3 Option 2 Clinical Psychology

if you are unable to attend you have the opportunity to make up the points by summarizing the archived Seminar. Your paper should be written in appropriate APA style for a written summary. In other words, you are not required to use direct quotes, cite references, include an abstract, or include a reference page. You do, however, have to write in complete sentences and paragraphs, provide a title page, and include a professional presentation. Listen to the archived Seminar to provide a summary and respond to the Seminar questions. Submit your summary to the Seminar Dropbox before the end of the unit to receive credit.

Please come to Seminar prepared to discuss the following:

Michael is a 25-year-old graduate student at a large university. He is seeing Dr. Kelly, a clinical psychologist, for depression and anxiety. These symptoms emerged when Michael began graduate school about six months ago and have persisted. Michael’s experience as a graduate student has included significant ongoing stressors, including financial insecurity, academic pressures, and turmoil in his romantic and family relationships. During one session, when Michael had suffered through a particularly stressful week and was feeling especially distraught. He spent the first 20 minutes of the session describing all the pressures he faced. At one point, Michael was quite agitated, and he said, “That school has wrecked my life. I hate that place. Maybe I ought to just blow the whole place up.”

  1. Dangerousness
    • How does the Tarasoff court case apply to this clinical case?
    • How can Dr. Kelly determine if Michael’s comment constitutes a credible, legitimate threat?
    • In your opinion, should Dr. Kelly break confidentiality based on Michael’s comment? If so, with whom, specifically, should he communicate? How does this change if Michael is a high school student and 16 years old?
    • How is the issue of informed consent relevant to this case?
  2. Confidentiality
    • Is it okay to talk to your friends about this if you do not tell the client’s name? What is the “6 degrees” concept? How does it apply to this situation?
    • How would this case be different if the client were an adolescent? How is confidentiality affected when the client is an adolescent?

STRESS…i need it in 7 hours please help

Provide a 1-page description of a stressful event currently occurring in your life. Then, referring to information you learned throughout this course, address the following:

  • What physiological changes occur in the brain due to the stress response?
  • What emotional and cognitive effects might occur due to this stressful situation?
  • Would the above changes (physiological, cognitive, or emotional) be any different if the same stress were being experienced by a person of the opposite sex or someone much older or younger than you?
  • If the situation continues, how might your physical health be affected?
  • What three behavioral strategies would you implement to reduce the effects of this stressor? Describe each strategy. Explain how each behavior could cause changes in brain physiology (e.g., exercise can raise serotonin levels).
  • If you were encouraging an adult client to make the above changes, what ethical considerations would you have to keep in mind? How would you address those ethical considerations?

In addition to citing the online course and the text, you are also required to cite a minimum of two scholarly sources. Please see the Academic Resources section under Course Home to use the Argosy University online library to find appropriate scholarly sources. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Please do not use Wikipedia.

Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and with normal 1-inch margins; written in APA style; and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be at least 6 pages in length.

ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING VERSUS NORMAL BREATHING IN A SLEEP STUDY

There are many people that have difficulties with sleep and many studies that psychologists have researched to help explain this human behavior. In this assignment you will have the opportunity to do a study of your own on yourself!

Your goal is to conduct a basic A/B control study to evaluate the alternate breathing method and objectively evaluate the results on aiding sleep.

For 3 consecutive nights, fill out the Data Tracking Sheet  (Data A), which records any rituals of before bed activity (read, watch TV, exercise, etc.), to track your normal pattern of falling asleep. In the morning record how long (approximately) it took to fall asleep, how many times you woke during the night, how rested you feel on a scale of 1-10, and anything unusual (you were sick, spouse was snoring) that impacted your sleep.

Next, read the assigned material on alternate nostril breathing in the lecture pages under Health Psychology in Module 2.  Feel free to conduct your own research on Argosy’s library.

After this try the alternate nostril breathing each night for 3 consecutive nights while lying in bed, lights off, right as you go to sleep. Practice the alternate breathing routine at least 10 times each of the 3 nights. Gather the same data in the Data Tracking Sheet (Data B).

Then create a report that summarizes and analyzes the results of your “study”.  The report must address whether or not the hypothesis that alternate nostril breathing works as a natural sleep aid was supported.

In your report, address the following:

Summarize the results of your study.
Determine the mean (average) amount of time it took you to fall asleep during the normal phase and the alternate breathing phase. Do the same for number of times waking, and the restfulness score each morning. Was there a difference between the two conditions (normal vs. alternate nostril breathing)?
Analyze your results from a data and biological perspective. In your analysis, make sure to answer the following questions:
Was the hypothesis that alternate nostril breathing works as a natural sleep aid supported through the study?
Do these claims make sense biologically? Is there scientific or biological evidence that could support this technique? Why would this method work biologically?
Describe and analyze cultural and ethical implications of natural versus medical remedies for sleep. Make sure to address how such remedies apply to various clients and the strengths and weaknesses of both types of remedies.
Describe from a scientific perspective why some people might be skeptical of this technique. Answer anticipated questions such as:
Are potential objectives related to cultural issues (i.e. Western medicine vs. Eastern)?
What scientific methods used are used in various studies, etc…
What are the stages of applying the scientific method?
