Conducting a z-Test

Conducting a z-Test

A researcher predicts that watching a film on institutionalization will change students’ attitudes about chronically mentally ill patients. The researcher randomly selects a class of 36 students, shows them the film, and gives them a questionnaire about their attitudes. The mean score on the questionnaire for these 36 students is 70. The score for people in general on this questionnaire is 75, with a standard deviation of 12. Using the five steps of hypothesis testing and the 5% significance level (i.e. alpha = .05), does showing the film change students’ attitudes towards the chronically mentally ill?

  1. What does it mean to set alpha at .05?
  2. What is your null hypothesis? Alternate hypothesis?
  3. Is this a one-tailed or two-tailed hypothesis?
  4. What is the critical z?
  5. Calculate the obtained z. Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis?
  6. State in words what you have found.

By Monday, January 18, 2016, deliver your assignment to the M2: Assignment 2 Dropbox.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Memory Models

Assignment 1: Discussion—Memory Models

Learning about the structure of memory can improve your study skills. In this assignment, you will discuss the academic applications of memory models and try to apply the principles to yourself. Use the readings for the module and the terminology of the subject and respond to these questions:

  • You are a teaching assistant for an undergraduate history class and need to prepare a test. You want evidence to show that students know the material well. What kind of test would you prepare? What kind of test do you think requires the most in-depth knowledge? Why?
  • As Dan took his history test, he could not recollect many of the dates he had studied. Dan had memorized some important dates just before the test. While he was doing this, he was also talking on the phone. Which of Dan’s memory stores—sensory memory, short-term memory (STM), or long-term memory (LTM)—do you think were most affected by his phone conversation? Why? Could Dan have done something differently to prevent forgetting the dates? Explain.
  • Identify two different kinds of mnemonic devices that could help Dan remember dates for his history test. Explain how they could be used.
  • Melissa is disappointed that she received yet another “D” on a test. She studied for several hours by reading and rereading her textbook and class notes. Based on the levels-of-processing memory theory, explain why Melissa’s method of studying was not very effective? What could she have done differently?
  • Using Baddeley’s working memory model, give an example of two tasks that could successfully be performed simultaneously (For example, can you listen to music while studying at the same time?). Discuss two other tasks that probably would interfere with each other. Make sure to discuss your answers in terms of the visuospatial scratchpad, the phonological loop, and the central executive.

Write your initial response in 4–5 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, November 15, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, November 19, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Unit 6 Learning Activity

I live in Orange, California

Domestic violence, though not an area that is typically thought of as something to be dealt with by the world of clinical psychology, is likely to be a part of many situations in which a clinical psychologist or other related mental health professional may be called to assist those in need. Domestic violence is not simply the result of a bad relationship between two people; relationships of all kinds can be affected by domestic violence. According to the United States Department of Justice (2013), domestic violence is defined as “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power or control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can by physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.” As you can see, that covers most if not all areas of human interaction, areas that most certainly include the world of mental health and as a result the world of clinical psychology.

For this learning activity, conduct a search of the Kaplan library for a “domestic violence assessment tool” and find at least one article that sought to evaluate an instrument of domestic violence assessment. Additionally, conduct a general search of the Internet, and find at least one resource in your area that may either be connected to the findings of the article you located in the library, or a reliable local resource that directly addresses domestic violence prevention or treatment. In at least 250 words, discuss both the findings of the article from the Kaplan library, as well as any local resource or resources that you found concerning domestic violence in your area.

Questions to consider as part of your discussion:

What did you learn about the assessment tool you found? Does it meet the needs of its intended target, with regard to both those who administer the test, as well as those it is intended to serve? Are there any cultural or gender biases that should be taken into consideration with regard to either the administration or application of the tool? If so, what are they?

With regard to the local resources you found, what services are provided? Do they provide services for both perpetrators and victims of domestic violence? Are the services being provided meeting the needs of those they are attempting to serve?

APA Research Project: Title Page and References Instructions

(in preparation for the Annotated Bibliography paper)

One purpose of this assignment is to get you started early on your Annotated Bibliography paper so that you will avoid the stress of throwing a paper together at the last minute. Since APA format is new to many of you, the other purpose is for your instructor to provide feedback on your choice of sources and APA formatting before you submit your Annotated Bibliography in Module/Week 7.

This assignment must be completed in one (1) current APA-formatted Microsoft Word document. Be sure to start with a blank document; avoid using any of the other templates provided in Word or you will lose points. Your submission must include 2 pages: a title page and a references page.

Your title page must include the correctly formatted header in the header area of the document; this includes the running head at the far left margin and the plain page number at the far right.  Select the Different First Page option and make sure all subsequent pages (after the title page) do not contain the words “Running head” and the colon. Please review the APA Guidelines. In the middle of the top half of the page, center the title of your paper, your name, and the school affiliation (see sample paper provided).

Your references page needs to include at least 5 primary research or peer-review journal articles published within the past 10 years. The sources must be based on original research. Use the Jerry Falwell Library, which can be accessed through the Services/Support link on the main menu.  This reference page will not be attached to your annotated bibliography paper, but it will be used in a little different format.

The references you turn in must be actual resources you plan to use when writing your Annotated Bibliography paper. As you do more research and work on your paper the next couple of weeks, you may want to revise your list.

To guide you in your research, be aware of the required criteria for your sources. You will be selecting your articles from those found in the Jerry Falwell Library.

Required criteria when looking for proper sources:

  • Articles must be recent (published within the last ten years).
  • Articles must be scholarly (primary research published in a scholarly publication or peer-reviewed journal).

This completed assignment must be in current APA format; it must include a title page and a reference page (all in one document). Note that your initial list of articles will be reviewed by your instructor. If the articles do not meet the required criteria, replacement articles will be required.

Family Therapy Case Study

Family Therapy Case Study

For this activity, watch the video: Family Therapy Case Study. Use the information in the scenario to answer the following questions:

Inez and Joseph are a married couple with a 7-year-old son, Leo. Leo is in second grade, but Leo has been refusing to go to school for several weeks. Sometimes, Inez and Joseph are able to coax or force him to go to school, but other times, he stays home the entire day. Almost every school-day morning begins with Leo refusing to get dressed to go to school. Inez and Joseph have been unable to overcome this refusal, and if they try to dress him themselves, he squirms, runs out of the room, cries, and screams. Leo’s behavior has caused significant strain on the marriage. Inez and Joseph frequently and intensely argue about the ideal way to handle Leo. Generally, Inez is more sympathetic and concerned about exploring underlying roots of his behavior, whereas Joseph prefers to make hard-and-fast rules or demands that will force Leo to behave more appropriately regarding of any underlying causes. There is significantly more hostility and less warmth in the home since Leo began this behavior, and Inez and Joseph are concerned that the problem is not improving. They seek the help of Dr. Gollum, a clinical psychologist who practices family therapy.

  • Which approach to family therapy would be ideal for this family (e.g., structural, solution-focused, Bowenian)? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.
  • Is family therapy preferable to other options, such as individual therapy for Leo or parent training for Inez and Joseph? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.
  • What would be the most valid measure of psychotherapy outcome for this case? Explain your thoughts and support your choices with aspects of the text or other scholarly sources.

Cite your textbook and online source(s) according to APA format. Be sure to include both an in-text citation for each scholarly source, and also a complete reference citation at the end of your post or paper. You will find a review of how to cite your scholarly sources using APA format in “APA Quick Reference” under Course Home .

small post 250 words

An important part of assisting at-risk children and families is having knowledge of the resources and programs available as sources of support. As such, a significant part of your course work in EDU644 involves discovering, analyzing, and creating resources! In your analysis of various descriptions of at-risk this week in Discussion 1, you discovered that those living in poverty are at-risk, with significant factors impacting their well-being and ability to thrive. In this discussion, you will examine online resources with information and supports for individuals and groups in poverty. Using what you discover, start developing your ideas for the website you will begin to create in Week Two.. Therefore, during your investigation, it is important that you take note of how the websites are organized and the way content is presented. Considering what makes a resource effective will help you design comparable organization and content structures in your own website. To prepare for this discussion, examine the Poverty USA website. Additionally, review the Week One Instructor Guidance, making sure to review the intellectual elaboration and the section dedicated to guidance for the assessments.

Initial Post: Create an initial post addressing the following:

    1. Summarize what you learned from the Poverty USA website and how this knowledge will be useful to you in your current or future professional practice.

    1. Summarize the statistical data from the Poverty USA website that explains the impact poverty has on children and families and include at least one example of a program, policy, or resource that provides support. Be sure to explain how the example provides support and cite where the information is located on the Poverty USA website.

    1. Describe the organizational and content features of the Poverty USA website that were particularly helpful, innovative, interactive, or that otherwise caught your attention and that you might emulate when creating your own website in this course.

    1. Using your preferred search engine, locate at least one additional website focused on groups in poverty and cite the website in your initial post. Include a two-to-three sentence description of the type of information included in the website.

  1. Describe the organizational and content features of the website you located that were particularly helpful, innovative, interactive, or that otherwise appealed to you and that you might emulate when creating your own website in this course.
