The geriatric assessment is a multidimensional and multidisciplinary assessment used to evaluate an older person’s functional ability, physical health, cognition, and socioeconomic status. This assessment differs from a typical medical assessment. This assessment assesses the person’s functional capacity as well as quality of life. Assessment often times incorporates multidisciplinary team like physician, social worker, nutritionist, physical and occupational therapists (Elsawy & Higgin, 2011).

As individual’s age, there are many changes occurring. These changes may incorporate changes in vision, hearing, gait, nutrition, and other problems or illnesses. Diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s are also common in geriatrics. It is very important to get an overview of the whole patient. It is necessary to conduct a thoroughly physical and history assessment (Elsawy & Higgin, 2011).

Patients functional ability is assessed. This includes the person’s ability to perform tasks of daily living. This task incorporated dressing, bathing, ambulating, and nutrition. It is important to determine if patient is getting their basic needs meet. Medical problems, family history, and social history are also reviewed. If any problem is suspected there are actions taken to meet those needs. References and supportive resources are also given if needed (Elsawy & Higgin, 2011).

When nurses are performing assessments, special consideration needs to be taken. Special consideration involves nurses paying close attention to visual and hearing problems. Nurses must speak clearly and slow to allow patients understanding of what is being said or asked. Nurses should also keep in mind that elderly patients intend to feel more fatigue. Nurses should allow sufficient time for assessments to be completed (Elsawy & Higgin, 2011).

Geriatric assessments are more thoroughly and require more time. It is important for nurses to gather adequate patient information. Not only to be pay attention to current problem or illness, but we also need to pay attention to patient daily basic needs and possible problems affecting these needs. If problems are noted, it is important to make the necessary referrals to make sure the patient is being cared for as a whole.

Re:Topic 1 DQ 1

Statistics and graphics continue to be the most tools for approving and disapproving theories in the present times. Different people use statistics and graphics for other several reasons and in different industries including sensitive fields like medication and healthcare. However, these graphics and statistics can be used inappropriately either with or without knowledge to mislead people. There are different ways that statistics and graphics can be used to misinterpret data.

Differences between the causation and association is the first way of misinterpreting data. At times, researchers may conclude that one variable in a research cause another variable because the two variables affect each other (Okeh, 2009). It is not true that since one variable affects another that one of them should cause another. Therefore, concluding in such dimension is a way of data misinterpretation.

The second way is to involve biasness and personal opinions in collection and representation of data. To explain this, an example of unevenly distributed data can lead to misinterpretation through graphics by making some abnormal exaggerations. For instance, a researcher may want to display the buying trends of coffee in a certain state over the past five years. During representation of data in a bar chart, some of the year may have insignificantly low sales that the researcher decides to increase the bar for that year to be visible. This action may lead to misinterpretation of data by the audience to which the data is represen

Errors is another way in which data can be misinterpreted. Errors in data analysis can lead to poor data representation thus leading to misinterpretation. Most individuals believe in statistics and when the graphs are drawn to present data, they tend to believe the trends regardless of the errors that were made.

            Scenarios

Data misinterpretation exists in several fields including the competitive markets and industries like pharmaceutical and healthcare. In pharmaceuticals, more than one medication or drug exist in the market that may serve one purpose. To make a particular type of drug to standout, commercials are used with personal opinions in data analysis and interpretation (Okeh, 2009). For instance, one of the commercials used small prints to display information about the guarantee of the benefits. In other instances, the benefits of one drug are represented in a larger scale as compared to the benefits of competing drugs to create intention misinterpretation of data by consumers.

Another example is the presidential election that was conducted in 1936 where predictions of the winner favored London. The polls were wrong because the winner was Roosevelt. The reason for this misinterpretation is the bias where lower income groups were excluded from the polls and taking too low sample size.

Explain each sampling technique discussed in the “Visual Learner: Statistics” in your own words, and give examples of when each technique would be appropriate.

  1.   Random Sampling:  When an individual is selected randomly to be part of a   survey.       Ex. After our patients are seen by their provider, one of the patient is asked to fill out a rate your experience form.

        2.   Stratified Sampling:  Based on different characteristics a given population is divided into smaller groups.      Ex. A population divided into ethnic groups when trying to find out how many are in college.

        3.   Systematic Sampling: It is based on selecting samples on a system interval with a chosen area to start.    Ex. Selecting every 7th patients leaving the clinic

        4.   Cluster Sampling: A group of young people divided into sections and randomly selecting an area to surveyed. Ex. At church we made four groups to discuss a topic, but choosing one group to be surveyed.

    5.   Convenience Sampling: Selecting a group of people that you know, in order for the results to be collected easily    Ex. Surveying, friends, family or co-workers.

BSOP-326 Total Quality Management – Fujiyama Electronics Case Study – Due Week 7

Fujiyama Electronics Case Study – Due Week 7

Objective | Project Deliverables | Grading Rubrics | Best Practices

Objective

This case study looks at the behavior of a circuit board process though the use of Control Charts. At least two Control Charts will need to be constructed, and from them you will be asked to provide an assessment of what you see. A template to facilitate the construction of the Control Charts has been provided. You are not required to use this template. A tutorial that outlines the steps for this case is located in Doc Sharing.

Problem Statement

Fujiyama Electronics, Inc. has had difficulties with circuit boards purchased from an outside supplier. Unacceptable variability occurs between two drilled holes that are supposed to be 5 cm apart on the circuit boards. Thirty samples of four boards each were taken from shipments from the supplier as shown in the data from the worksheet. Data in the worksheet below can also be assessed here.

pic

Project Deliverables

The student will submit the completed case study in a Word document to their Dropbox by the end of class Week 7. The paper is worth 50 points.

The student will complete and/or answer the following questions.

  1. Calculate X-Bar-Bar, R-Bar, and associated control limits using the data in the table above.
  2. Create X-Bar•R (Average & Range) Control Charts from the data in the table above.
  3. Discuss notable out-of-control conditions displayed in the completed X-Bar•R (Average & Range) Control Charts. Only consider points outside the control limits. Do not consider runs, set of points within certain zones, etc.
  4. If the conditions you note could be defined as assignable conditions and they are removed from the process, what will happen to the X-Bar•R Control Chart?

(a) Remove the data related to the out-of-control points you observed from the origainal data and recalculate a new X-Bar-Bar, R-Bar, and associated control limits.
(b) Create new X-Bar•R (Average & Range) Control Charts from your updated data.

  1. Discuss how the two sets of Control Charts are different. What has changed?

The format of the case study should conform to the Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition, for title page and text. Citations and references are not required. A basic APA tutorial can be found inthe Webliography and a paper template can be found in Doc Sharing. The completed case study will be submitted to your Dropbox as an MS Word document. All graphics and charts will be a part of the Word document and submitted as a file. Documents authored in other applications such as WordPerfect or MS Works will not be accepted.

This project is to be accomplished individually, and will reflect the work of each student. All DeVry University policies are in effect including the plagiarism policy. Late papers will not be accepted without prior permission.

Submit your Fujiyama Case Study paper to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page by the end of Week 7. For instructions on how to use the Dropbox, read these Step-by-Step Instructions or watch this Tutorial iconDropbox Tutorial.

Best Practices

xx

The following are the best practices in preparing this paper. Sample papers, using the APA format, are located in Doc Sharing. Other useful information has also been provided there, including an APA paper template.

  • Cover Page – Include who you prepared the paper for, who prepared it, and the date.
  • Body of Your Work – Titles to identify different areas that you address. State the main ideas, major points in each idea, and supporting information. Break down each main idea you will use in the body of your paper. Show some type of division like separate sections that are labeled, separate groups of paragraphs, or headers. You would include the information you found during your research and investigation.
  • Summary and Conclusion – Summarizing is similar to paraphrasing but presents the gist of the material in fewer words than the original. An effective summary identifies the main ideas and major support points from the body of your work. Minor details are left out.
Additional hints on preparing the best possible project.
    • Apply a three-step process of writing… Plan, Write, and Complete.
    • Prepare an outline of your research paper before you go forward.
    • Complete a first draft and then go back to edit, evaluate, and make any changes required.
    • Use visual communication if it will help clarify and support your work. Any material that can be removed and not affect the clarity of your work is essentially filler, and should be avoided. Filler distracts from the flow of your work and will most likely cause you to lose points.
  • References – Not required for this case study.

Re:Topic 3 DQ 1

Z-tests and T-Tests are both statistical methods used to test different hypotheses and analyze their differences.  The Z test is used to decide if two population means are different when they know the variances. The best time to use a Z-test is when the sample size being used is larger than 30 and the population standard deviation is known. A T-test is used examine two population means, a two sample t-test can be used to determine if two samples are different and this test is most commonly used when the variances of two normal distributions are not known and with smaller sample sizes less than 30. The following are some of the differences that can be noted between Z-tests and the T-tests.

Z-tests:

  1. Z-tests will follow normal distribution.
  2. Z-tests require their samples to be moderate to large in size (n>30).
  3. They require certain conditions be reliable tests.
  4. Z-tests are less commonly used.
  5. Z-tests are preferred when standard deviations are available.

T-tests:

  1. T-tests will follow the Student’s T-distribution.
  2. T-tests are more appropriate for smaller sample sizes (n<30).
  3. T-tests are more flexible and adaptable than z-tests.
  4. T-Tests are more commonly used.
  5. Can be used if the population’s standard deviation is not known.

I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BESED IN THIS ARGUMENT. PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS TO DO THE COMMENTS. BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS.

First off, let me just state that any document that has 955 pages is not going to be understood by the masses, let alone the attorneys and staff drafting this document.

The most important feature in the act is the promise that everyone will be able to afford health care.  They have postulated that if you can’t afford it, there will be a subsidy (tax credit) to help with that cost.  As the cost of living increases, the cost of insurance increases, unless subsidy’s also increase, this will eat up family’s discretionary income. The main reason to have the Obamacare enacted, as stated by Obama, is uncontrolled health care spending that threatens to bankrupt the federal government, yet if Obamacare limits health insurance costs to a percent of family income, it will create an implicit entitlement that will be growing even faster than the federal government’s direct health care entitlements (mainly Medicare and Medicaid)!

Another aspect is that people will not be turned down for insurance due to a preexisting condition.  You also previously could have been kicked off your insurance plan due to requiring too much care, this was changed and limit benefits cannot be placed for preexisting conditions as well.  Keeping your child on the plan until they turn 26 years old was a benefit even if they were married, not living with their parents, or a student.  This is good for the community and public health (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services website, 2017).

Another aspect of the law is the preventive care that will be offered at no cost.  This includes preventative measures for blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol testing.  Many cancer screenings, counseling on lifestyle modifications; smoking cessation, losing weight, eating healthy, treating depression, and reduction of alcohol consumption would all benefit a community.  Regular and well-baby visits, routine vaccinations, screenings for healthy pregnancies, and flu and pneumonia shots are all areas of education for the community nurse to be informed about.

Just knowing where to direct people to obtain insurance on the exchange is a good place to start for the nurse wanting to assist in implementation of this law; https://www.healthcare.gov/ (Holland & Higuera, 2015).

Re:Topic 5 DQ 1

The Caribbean nation of Haiti suffered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010.  This resulted in over 200,000 deaths and over 600,000 injured or homeless, struggling to find the basic resources needed for survival.  In my thinking, primary prevention would be with the building codes.  At the time of the earthquake, there was NO building codes.  In a perfect world, a force of nurses would act on an intervention of establishing safe, strict building codes with the officials.  Haiti is built on a natural slope so buildings are weaker and prone to falling during a quake (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2010).  Even now, they issue no more than 10 building permits a month.  The people disregard the laws and the officials can do nothing to stop it.  If codes would be followed, lives would have been saved.

Secondary prevention intervention would be education about the importance of clean water and sanitation, and providing water and water purification methods.   Haiti had NO infrastructure before the earthquake hit, only 50% of the people had access to an improved water source.  The people had to depend on lakes, streams, rivers for their water source, regardless of it cleanliness.  Another 80% did not have adequate sanitation available.  This intervention would have been good even before the earthquake, however, with so much destruction, the threat of cholera was real and teaching about safe disposal of human waste, providing latrines, and safe water sources would be more important than ever (The Borgen Project, 2015).

Tertiary prevention intervention would be help for the amputees that have been left with a lifelong challenge.  People in Haiti with amputations need more than artificial limbs; they need prosthetic rehabilitation including not just the prosthesis but post-fabrication adjustments, physical conditioning, emotional, psychological, and post-traumatic stress disorder counseling, vocational rehabilitation, and social reintegration.  Teams of volunteers would fly in and dedicate time to work with these people to get them back on their feet, so to speak (United States National Member Society of the international society for prosthetic and orthotics, n.d.).  Providing funds to the Brac Limb and Brace Center would be a good start.  This is an organization that provides low cost, high quality artificial limbs and braces (Global Giving website, n.d.).
