Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is a highly low cost carrier. It gives the clients many options of customizing their base tickets amounts. The company has agent print-outs known as the boarding pass. The boarding pass is used to check the input versus the doing in the online kiosk. The system checks bags and progressively increases charges for overweight bags.  By 2007, the Spirit started charging an amount of $3 for drinks. The charges increased to $5 in 2011 for passengers boarding passes printed at the check-in. According to these company, any bags that can exactly fit under the seats, are not charged. Any big bags that cause the overwhelming condition to the operators are the ones that are charged. The company ensures that the luggage does not exceed 50 pounds, and the bags are loaded up to $25. The company started in the US as a carrier to temporary to increase the passenger baggage fees (Eden, 1996).  In the states, the bag fees began with a minimal fee of $2 to attract fewer bags to the airline during traveling.  The aim of the company in discouraging passengers from carrying huge bags have resulted in another open business.

The company attains a higher competitive advantage over the higher-cost carriers. Its low prices in the market make it maintain its customers. Unlike some other companies such as the Delta Airline, US Airways and many other means of transport enterprises in the US, the stripe line has the least charges thus making many people prefer to use it. The company is also winning the competitive ability by ensuring that its bankruptcy is protected.  The company was recorded to be among the businesses in the US airlines that protected its bankruptcy. By so doing, it established a strong foundation in the market as compared to the other airline which was declared bankrupt in the year 2012

The attractiveness of the Airstrip industry makes customers like it. The leisure travels cost which depends on the service provided by the airstrip increases when the service given by the airline industry are active. The most significant factor that makes the airstrip gain more customers is its effectiveness.

Another external business factors that affect the runway industry is the fuel volatility. A company like a strip airline take proper steps when trying to regulate the fuel prices. The fuel prices can affect the company to extend of deciding to quit the market. For a company to be comfortable in the market, it should be prepared for anything in the fuel market and once the fuel prices Hicks, the company should have its compensation scheme.

Competition

Competition is one of the core external threat that any company can experience. Competition and displacement of business from its niche results from factors such as quality of services provided by a corporation, the level reputation in the market and the company’s strategies for regulating competition. The airstrip company has minimized the competition from the external and new businesses entering the market by ensuring that the services that provide are of exceptional quality. The company is also consistent in the market. Unlike other enterprises that were declared bankruptcy in 2011, airstrip has a technique of protecting its bankruptcy states.

The bargaining of the buyers

Companies that provides the customers a higher bargaining power are likely to experience more sell and more customers. Here, the customer can choose what type of airline to use. In the airstrip industry, the most customers tend to shift from other service providers to the runway production due to a relatively small burgeoning power. The bargaining power should touch all spheres that affect the entire field of airfield transport. It should also change the suppliers such as the fuel providers (Kaplan, & Norton, 2001). If all stack-holders are given opt unities to express their feeling about the prices of the products they are supplying or selling, they will feel comfortable to work with the company in question and thus good customer-seller relation thus an expansion in the business niche.

EFE Analysis

From the external factors analysis and the respective rating, the IFE and EFE matrices quantitatively show that code sharing, implementation of new route are among the techniques that promote the company’s market acquisition. According to QSPM, strategies are presented regarding total relative attractiveness.  For a company to shine in terms strengths, opportunity grip and ability to detect threads, code sharing is the most advantageous and useful technique to use. The cost of code sharing includes sharing, and consolidation of the airstrip resources, the maintained cost, flier program cost, and internal adjustment (Lawrence, & Lorsch, 1986). Research indicates that the least mode of operation is by the little code business model.  The strip airline has reduced its operational cost thus, making it easy for capital financing.

Internal business environment

The airstrip industry started in 1919 in Hounslow Heath Aerodrome in England. It was among the very first airstrips that operated for international commercial services.  During its development, the industry experienced a great deal of issues which included engine break down, regular refuel after the plane has flown for short distances. The problem was later solved by the implementation of the aircraft that would fly over long distance without any need of refueling. Such planes were introduced in the 1960s. The purpose of the air transport that was invented was meant to assist in military work A fact that changed over time and the plane started carrying people and finally become a means of transportation.

Corporate Level Strategy

Corporate level strategy refers strategic decision made by a business that once affected would cause a great impact on the entire organization. They have a bearing on the following sectors of an organization. The financial department, the administration office, the human resource department.  The above decision makes the whole body be paralyzed if wrong was done.

Business Unit Level Strategy

Business level strategies refer to a detailed action taken to provide a value of a customer and the way the company treats each and every client. The company should ensure that there exist an everlasting relationship between the client and the business itself.

Functional Level Strategy

Refers to careful selecting rules that will be followed in the process of decision making. Any effective decision-making strategy should identify all field for its effect to be felt. The functional level of strategic management touches the marketing department, financial plan and many other.

For a business to be successful, both internal and external environment should be scanned. The scanning provides relevant information which is used to analysis and give out the most outstanding way to handle any effects that may negatively affect the business (Post, J. E., Frederick, W. C., Lawrence, A. T., & Weber, 1996). Scanning of the environment and analyzing of the situation results in the positive gain of an organization if the results of the scan are but into relevant practice.

Abnormal Psychology

Abnormal psychology is part of psychology that fully deals with abnormal behaviors and psychopathology. The abnormal psychology covers abroad variety of disorders especially those from depression to fascination- compulsion to sexual divergence. There are different perspectives that are normally used by psychiatrists in abnormal psychology. In most cases the mental health professionals use elements from multiple areas so that they may understand and be able to treat psychological disorders. The behavioral approach dealing with the abnormal psychology mostly focuses on observable actions. The behavioral therapy focuses on the reinforcement of positive behaviors and they do not focus on the maladaptive behavior. The proffered approach when dealing with the abnormal psychology constantly focuses on the biological origin of the mental illness (Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). This kind of the perspective mostly emphasizes on the understanding of the fundamental causes of the disorder, which is believed to include genetic inheritance, chemical imbalance, infection and related physical illnesses. The medical treatment is commonly pharmacological in nature but is also often used hand in hand with psychotherapy. According to psychology cognition, prejudice can be described as a state of unfairness or injustice. Cognitive is not part of prejudice because, according to psychology cognitive deals with issues concerning mental practices such as problem solving, memory perception, language use and creative thinking. Therefore one can be discriminated due to his/her behavioral  outstanding ,emotional difference, or due to political background while cognitive is something that cannot be noticed easily of which its somehow hard to bring unfairness or injustice instead, cognitive can be used to solve  the problem of unfairness and injustice. Hindsight bias is a person who predicts something before it takes place. When the event takes place he or she just comes to prove what he or she had detected, therefore that is why the person wasn’t at all surprised. The reasons why people compare them with others is due to; low self –esteem and stereotype threats. Self –esteem is either positive or negative attitude towards oneself that shows ones perspective determines his worth (Barlow & Durand, 2011). A person with a low self esteem is always in need of approval from others due to lack of self confidence. Stereotype threat is a situation where a personnel feel insecure about the company they’re in either the friends or fellow workers.

Scapegoat is somebody who is innocent yet blamed for other people’s faults. when I was young in school I had done my assignment but my friend had not completed hers and she took it without my conscience and she presented it to the teacher and it was so tough on me since the teacher punished me instead. The best strategy to change deeply rooted attitude and behavior is to consider a rational emotive behavior therapy. This is whereby one undergoes emotional, psychologically and behavioral turn around after several processes. Addiction is an intricate illness characterized by intense and uncontrollable craving of something commonly drugs, which is usually accompanied by devastating consequences. At initial stages, individuals take the drugs voluntarily but over time, their ability to stay away from drugs becomes compromised and it forces them to seek, find and consume them. Addiction is a brain disease caused by prolonged exposure of drugs on brain functioning.  It affects a number brain channels, including those involved in memory and learning, reward and motivation and inhibitory control over behaviors. Treatment of drug abuse and addiction is not simple owing to the fact that addiction is diverse and affects many aspects in an individual’s life. This paper is going to address various models that describe effective etiology of addiction. An addicted person should be helped by the treatment to cease drug abuse, maintain a lifestyle that is drug free and be a productive and responsible member of the society (Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). Because addiction is a chronic disease, victims require long-term care to achieve the definitive goal of permanent abstinence and resurgence of their lives.

Combination of medication and behavioral therapy plays a major role in overall addiction treatment process that usually commences with detoxification, followed by treatment and prevention of relapse. The following models describe how the overall addiction treatment process can be conducted to render the victims drug-free lives. The detoxification stage of medications helps in repressing withdrawal symptoms. However, patients who are medically assisted to handle withdrawals and left at that stage often abuse drugs just like those who were never treated (Barlow & Durand, 2011). Medication can be used to help diminish cravings, prevent relapse and restore normal brain functioning.  There are medications for alcohol addiction, opioids, tobacco, stimulants and even cannabis (marijuana). Opioids: Buprenorphine, methadone and, for some patients, naltrexone are effective drugs for opiate addiction treatment. These medications act on the same points in the brain as morphine and heroine and therefore they suppress all withdrawals and stop that strong urge to consume them. The patients are helped by the medications to extricate from drug seeking and related unlawful behavior. There are three medications approved for treatment of alcohol addiction: acamprosate, disulfiram and naltrexone. The latter inhibits opioid receptors that are concerned with effects of alcohol drinking and craving. It minimizes relapse to overindulgence in alcohol and is highly effective in most patients. Disulfiram makes the patient to be uncomfortable with alcohol as it produces distasteful reaction that includes palpitations and nausea if the patient drinks alcohol. Acamprosate serves to minimize withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety and insomnia. The patients are assisted by behavioral treatments to modify their behaviors and attitudes related to substance abuse. These treatments also enable patients to stay in treatment for longer periods and thus enhancing the effectiveness of medications. From the research done by  (Barlow & Durand, 2011), ‘Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which helps individuals” under treatment “to recognize, avoid and cope with situations that” can lead to relapse; multi-dimensional family psychoanalysis which addresses various influences of patterns of drug abuse and also seeks to recover overall functioning of the family; motivational incentives which make use  of positive support to encourage abstinence among patients and motivational interviewing which takes advantage of individuals’ willingness to enter treatment and change their behavior. Residential treatment programs can also offer much help especially to very rigorous cases. Therapeutic communities (TCs), for instance, are well established programs in which addiction victims typically remain at a residence for up to 12 months. The principal difference between TCs and other treatment models is that they use community as major agent of change to influence individuals’ perceptions, attitudes and behaviors linked to drug abuse. Patients with long histories of drug abuse can also make use of TCs. They are also tailored to accommodate women who are married and have kids. This model explains the complex relations between the biological, psychological and social facets of addiction. Its ability to explain the intricate nature of addiction has made it very useful by researchers Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). Initially, this model was designed as an option to the existing biomedical model. A few decades later it was articulated byBarlow & Durand (2011), for addictive behaviors in recognition that alcohol and drinking problems are diverse. The author also illustrates that intense assessment that could consider ‘biological, psychological and social” facets of the patient’s life that “are affected by drinking” were recommended. Since then the concept of biopsychosocial model has been expanded to cater for the multi-dimensional pathways to addiction such as learned behavior, impact of one’s family and the need for self-medication’ (Barlow & Durand,  2011).

In conclusion, the above models as described and analyzed by various research practitioners solve issues differently and are of equal importance. In my perspective, the behavioral model relates a lot with my philosophy. The behavioral therapy focuses on the reinforcement of positive behaviors and they do not focus on the maladaptive behavior. In most cases the mental health professionals use elements from multiple areas so that they may understand and be able to treat psychological disorders (Barlow & Durand, 2011). A person with a low self esteem is always in need of approval from others due to lack of self confidence. These treatments also enable patients to stay in treatment for longer periods and thus enhancing the effectiveness of medications.

MATH102-1404A-22 Introduction to College Math

MATH102-1404A-22 Introduction to College Math

Task Name:

Phase 2 Discussion Board

Deliverable Length:

2 parts: See assignment details

Details:

Primary Discussion Response is due by Wednesday (11:59:59pm Central), Peer Responses are due by Sunday (11:59:59pm Central).

Part I: Discussing Percents/Decimals/Fractions and Conversions

Task Background: There are different ways of representing the same value of a number. For instance, 0.5 (a decimal) is equivalent to 50% (a percentage) and to 1/2 (a fraction). Conversions such as these are needed in many applicable areas, such as interest on a loan, calculating savings on discounts, measuring an amount of medicine administered to a patient, and buying a certain amount of carpet.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 3–4 paragraphs that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Task Assignment: There are specific procedures to convert a value from a decimal to a percentage (and vice versa), from a fraction to a percentage (and vice versa), and from a decimal to a fraction (and vice versa). Below, you will find four problems in the following areas: Criminal Justice, Business, Medical, and Real Life. Please select any TWO for completion of the task. You must show all steps and every single calculation. Thoroughly explain how and why you did each calculation with complete sentences. Include discussion relating the problem to your own personal experiences or to the real world.

Criminal Justice

There are many important formulas that are used in the field of criminal justice. For example, the Widmark formula is used to calculate the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at a particular time for an individual. Widmark’s research found that the average man’s body can hold alcohol in even distribution in 73% of its weight. In other words, 73% of a 150-pound man’s body holds all the alcohol he consumes, in even distribution. 73% of 150 pounds = 0.73 × 150 = 109.5 pounds. Widmark found that the average woman’s body can hold alcohol in even distribution in 66% of its weight.

1.     Convert 66% to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.

2.     Give an example of a particular weight for a woman, and find the average portion of the body that holds the alcohol.

Business

Many interest rates, such as those on car loans, credit cards, and home loans, are given as a percent. If you need to make any calculations with the percent interest rate, however, you must convert the percent to a decimal.

1.     Research and find the interest rate, as a percent, for a particular credit card.

2.     Convert the interest rate percent to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.

3.     You want to compare your researched rate to another credit card’s interest rate of 12 1/5%.

o    Convert this interest rate percent to a decimal.

o    Compare the 12 1/5% to your researched interest rate, and explain which interest rate is better.

Medical

It is important that physicians know how long a medicine will stay in a patient’s body in order to prescribe dosing instructions so that the patient does not overdose. For example, a patient takes a pill that has a dosage of 50 mg. (milligrams) and wakes up the next day with a particular percentage of the medication washed out.

1.     Demonstrate your knowledge of conversions by first choosing a percentage of the medicine that is washed out the next day, and then convert this percentage to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.

2.     How much medication remains in the body after the percentage amount of your choosing is washed out?

Real Life

When buying mulch for your lawn, you find that it is ordered in square yards. You have the area measurements of your lawn in square feet, which you found by multiplying the length of your yard (in feet) times the width (in feet).

1.     Demonstrate with an example by first giving the length and width of a yard in feet. Since lawns may not have exact whole-number length and width measurements, you must provide an example where the length or the width contains a fractional amount.

2.     Find the area of the yard in square feet.

3.     Convert the amount of square feet to square yards so that you can order the mulch. (Hint: Research how many square feet equals one square yard.)

Part II: Responses to Other Students: Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 1-paragraph reply about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening. To help you with your discussion, please consider the following questions:

·         What did you learn from your classmate’s posting?

·         What additional questions do you have after reading the posting?

·         What clarification do you need regarding the posting?

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

AgCredit case study

Synopsis

This is a case study that focuses on an agricultural credit and loan company that has its core competency anchored in vast knowledge of its customers. However, the IT structure does not suit the company’s business model as required. The current infrastructure is not pure enterprise architecture and there are rampant issues about the staff. A lot of preparatory work had been done and the situational analysis developed where a new team was chosen to chart a proper course of action to better the IT structure. With all the information gathered by the team, the next task now is to inform and convince the organization’s leadership of the drafted changes so that they can be brought on board for discussion and implementation. To enhance more effectiveness in the IT department, there is need to regularly communicate the company’s goals as well as the future plans that involve the business operations (Smith & McKeen, 2008).

Overview of strategy for case evaluation

The report looks at a “horizontal” slice of several interrelated issues in the enterprise. Mixing all the details provided for the case with the general concerns into a cogent and relevant analysis was the main aim and it involved various methods.

i.                    Setting the context

In this analysis, I role-played various possible structures and looked for those relationships that are effective to allow formulation of and organizational structure. The case has many good starting points to lend and I carried some other ideas forward focusing on the future.

ii.                  Major priorities and initiatives of AGCredit

After establishing a clear strategy an getting an idea of how the structure of the organization would look like, I applied knowledge from the related cases and some best practices mentioned in the class textbook to suggest a likely prioritization process for the organization’s project selection. After further developing the scenarios for SOA’s new model to test, I looked at the likely outcomes as well as the significant advantages. These recommendations were used to answer the discussion question four.

iii.                Looking back

More ideas on governance and capabilities also came from readings, lecturers and even previous case work done. Although the case has very different specifics in a sense that the equipment’s standardization is not common among the cases hence the cases need an improved IT-business partnerships and oversight as well. On the other hand, looking forward for the elements that make the cases similar and different gave a very unique and distinguishing perspective to each case.

Discussion questions

The following are responses to the discussion questions in the textbook;

Propose an organizational structure for the IT department that you feel would support the transformation of AgCredit into a process-centric organization

Recognition of the company’s business ownership is very important for the organizational structure. It will be instrumental to have the business sign on and also join the conversation the Information Technology and the related projects (Smith & McKeen, 2008). A steering committee needs to be created so that it can be part of the approval process for the company’s projects. This committee is also vital to ensure all the projects take an enterprise view. It is the same multidivisional committee that will also ensure that the projects undertaken fit the SOA framework.

The chief information officer should also be involved in the boardroom and be allowed to access the senior management including the chief executive officer. The CIO should hire the top management individuals that can actually convey the business and departmental objects so that they help guide the IT employees (Boudreau, Serrano, & Larson, 2014). Each LOB’s account manager that belongs to the business but reporting to the top IT management should also be installed. All IT employees need to be reassessed so that the company ensures all the workers do the right roles they deserve.

There is also need to bring the IT functionality in alignment to the enterprise’s vision and mission. One of the options to achieve this is to try and internally promote for the vacant positions in IT and also insource that positions that cannot be filled by the current employees. Insourcing is convenient as it will have a significant benefit of training the IT personnel at the same time getting the job well done.  Outsourcing for IT functions that are not among the core competencies can also be undertaken if the enterprise management desires.

Outline a project selection process for AgCredit to ensure alignment with the enterprise business vision

As discussed in the previous question, a multidimensional steering committee to represent several LOBs needs to be established and also given the capabilities to make decisions (Smith & McKeen, 2008). The process should kick off by establishing the connection between the project’s objectives and the vision of the company. Next step should be for the committee to outline the effects of the project on their division and how it can be used to meet the departmental needs of the enterprise if possible. In addition, it needs to ensure that if fits within the SOA and that it is not duplicates by the current processes or other software application nodes. It the project is just an add-on or an enhancement to another existing project, early communication with the end user should be done so that they can be aware of the enhancement and the benefits.

The projects should also be checked for modularization as well as standardization for the business process. The process of ensuring the project is standardized is very vital in the establishment of a proper architecture for the enterprise that is aligned with its vision (Yoo, Boland, & Lyytinen, 2006). In addition, all the projects should be made sure that they are considered and funded through a certain percentage of the tax upon the LOBs so that it supports the SOA.

How should Manley “make the case” for SOA to ensure that the executive team at AgCredit buys in?

Manley will have to present the major strengths of SOA and ensure that they focus on how it aligns and supports the vision of the company.

Current products and services will be available to customers or modified for usability

The transition will also simplify the needs of the organization and speed up the implementation process for the products.

It supports all the web services that ensure the company expands its relationship with customers, allow continuous growth opportunities and also has ability to sell across all the divisions.

It will also offer numerous opportunities for all the divisions both in terms of stretching the development dollars and possible financial gains.

Current services can be acquired and be implemented as fast as possible within the SOA. This ensures that the company increases its capabilities and that it stays caught up with other large companies. In essence, this is a good way to level the playing field by providing valuable systems and resources.

After centralizing the customer information which is essential to the SOA, the saving has to be realized from the reducing database.

Creating the processes in such a way that they are common will also help align the whole business and ensure the company gets value from the decreased uncertainty and increased communication.

Having this kind of technology base may steer up positive changes in the way the employees work for example working from home or any other place through a virtual private network.

What new internal IT capabilities will have to be developed in order to create an IT department to support AgCredit’s future business architecture?

The new capabilities that are needed to support the SOA from the IT perspective include the, Information delivery options, information management tools, management tools, development cycles, and a customer service attitude toward the divisions. Clear role clarification will be of significant importance in setting up these capabilities. Management tools include visioning and business alignment processes, funding methods, measurement metrics and focus, and monitoring methods. Information management tools include collection activities, organize process including schemes and taxonomy, process modules to use the information, and maintenance procedures that support business functions. Development cycles must conform to SOA standards and guidelines, using compliant hardware and software to make systems that breakdown the functionality, and complaint with regulatory needs, including system proficiency in creating reports for audit purposes. The customer service attitude will be needed to manage perceptions and keep close ties with the business.

What aspects of IT governance do you think would be important in supporting this transformation?

The divisional and enterprise vision and objectives need to be outlined before the formalization of the governance structures. Some guiding principles should be drafted by the IT personnel alongside other enterprise management personnel. The principle drafting may also involve setting up various account managers within the LOBs and also forming a steering committee which is given a considerable power of decision making (De Weerdt, Schupp, Vanderloock, & Baesens, 2013). The multidivisional committee must work very closely with the CIO and other management personnel and have a corporate sponsorship and high level approval. The management team should concentrate on guiding the process of transformation and focusing on key issues such as regulatory compliance and sox. In addition, involvement of the enterprise stakeholders in the steering committee will allow the IT structures and the business become partners an effectively work together. It will also ensure all point of views within the enterprise are heard and considered during the process of decision making. Policy decisions should be outlined early on to support the vision of the organization.

Issues discussed

In the answers discussed above, the thoughts given follows the strategic view and also the organizational chart. In this case, the IT is often seen taking a backseat to some vital business concerns that it should have actually tackled. For instance, the CEO being approached during the weekend to address the IT issues shows total lack of perceived value in IT division. The company also has that reputation of the customer knowledge thus allowing it grab the competitive edge. The CEO is a very strong believer in IT as a potential business support. This belief can be reinforced with the process in which IT is set up to operate and also with its failure to meet the minimum credibility and competency standards. The instinctual desire have all the IT outsources by Manley is a very good indicator of the inability on the side of IT to deliver the required value to the enterprise.

One of the best practices that should be deployed before beginning the restructuring process or even the process of consolidation to a customer service file is to get the business need and develop some kind of technology roadmap (Tyagi & Sawhney, 2010). It is not a requirement to complement the entire process before beginning other initiatives but rather this process will give the enterprise a focus while setting the current expectations. This will be helpful as it will open the communication lines for IT and other business operations as well. Since the technological roadmap focuses largely on how technology will be deployed to support the strategy, vision and objectives of the business, this will therefore help to ensure all the divisions work in harmony towards to unification of the organization.

Once the divisional and organizational objectives and vision are lined out, other processes can begin. To ensure the processes are working properly alongside business operations, various guiding principles have to be established. This may be in form of setting up account managers within the LOBs as discussed and setting up a multidivisional steering committee which is empowered with considerable decision making capabilities. Communicating business needs is necessary to ensure the IT staffing is correctly done. It is also of great importance that the guiding principles align to the enterprise vision and objectives. According to the textbook, the vision of the enterprise would consist of the following;

1.      Continuous growth

2.      Ability to spend more time with the customers

3.      Expansion of customer relationships

4.      Ability to cross-sell products and services

5.      Provision of consistent experience to the organization’s customers

In addition, implementation of a SOA environment has to be considered within the process.

MAT 510 CASE STUDY 1

  • Case Study 1: Statistical Thinking in Health Care

    Read the following case study.

Ben Davis had just completed an intensive course in Statistical Thinking for Business Improvement, which was offered to all employees of a large health maintenance organization. There was no time to celebrate, however, because he was already under a lot of pressure. Ben works as a pharmacist’s assistant in the HMO’s pharmacy, and his manager, Juan de Pacotilla, was about to be fired. Juan’s dismissal appeared to be imminent due to numerous complaints and even a few lawsuits over inaccurate prescriptions. Juan now was asking Ben for his assistance in trying to resolve the problem, preferably yesterday!

“Ben, I really need your help! If I can’t show some major improvement or at least a solid plan by next month, I’m history.”
“I’ll be glad to help, Juan, but what can I do? I’m just a pharmacist’s assistant.”
“I don’t care what your job title is; I think you’re just the person who can get this done. I realize I’ve been too far removed from day-to-day operations in the pharmacy, but you work there every day. You’re in a much better position to find out how to fix the problem. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.”
“But what about the statistical consultant you hired to analyze the data on inaccurate prescriptions?”
“Ben, to be honest, I’m really disappointed with that guy. He has spent two weeks trying to come up with a new modeling approach to predict weekly inaccurate prescriptions. I tried to explain to him that I don’t want to predict the mistakes, I want to eliminate them! I don’t think I got through, however, because he said we need a month of additional data to verify the model, and then he can apply a new method he just read about in a journal to identify ‘change points in the time series,’ whatever that means. But get this, he will only identify the change points and send me a list; he says it’s my job to figure out what they mean and how to respond. I don’t know much about statistics — the only thing I remember from my course in college is that it was the worst course I ever took– but I’m becoming convinced that it actually doesn’t have much to offer in solving real problems. You’ve just gone through this statistical thinking course, though, so maybe you can see something I can’t. To me, statistical thinking sounds like an oxymoron. I realize it’s a long shot, but I was hoping you could use this as the project you need to officially complete the course.”

“I see your point, Juan. I felt the same way, too. This course was interesting, though, because it didn’t focus on crunching numbers. I have some ideas about how we can approach making improvements in prescription accuracy, and I think this would be a great project. We may not be able to solve it ourselves, however. As you know, there is a lot of finger-pointing going on; the pharmacists blame sloppy handwriting and incomplete instructions from doctors for the problem; doctors blame pharmacy assistants like me who actually do most of the computer entry of the prescriptions, claiming that we are incompetent; and the assistants tend to blame the pharmacists for assuming too much about our knowledge of medical terminology, brand names, known drug interactions, and so on.”
“It sounds like there’s no hope, Ben!”

“I wouldn’t say that at all, Juan. It’s just that there may be no quick fix we can do by ourselves in the pharmacy. Let me explain how I’m thinking about this and how I would propose attacking the problem using what I just learned in the statistical thinking course.”

QUESTIONS;
Assuming the role of Ben Davis, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you apply the approach discussed in the textbook to this problem. You’ll have to make some assumptions about the processes used by the HMO pharmacy. Also, please use the Internet and / or Library LRC to research articles on common problems or errors that pharmacies face. Your paper should address the following points:

    1. Develop a process map about the prescription filling process for HMO’s pharmacy, in which you specify the key problems that the HMO’s pharmacy might be experiencing. Next, use the supplier, input, process steps, output, and customer (SIPOC) model to analyze the HMO pharmacy’s business process.
    2. Analyze the process map and SIPOC model to identify possible main root causes of the problems. Next, categorize whether the main root causes of the problem are special causes or common causes. Provide a rationale for your response.
    3. Suggest the main tools that you would use and the data that you would collect in order to analyze the business process and correct the problem. Justify your response.
    4. Propose one (1) solution to the HMO pharmacy’s on-going problem(s) and propose one (1) strategy to measure the aforementioned solution. Provide a rationale for your response.
    5. Use at least two (2) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Algebra colllege

The main object of study for this week (as well as for all of Algebra) is the Function.  A function “f” is a correspondence between two sets, the domain of the function, x,  and the range of the function, f(x) such that every element x of the domain corresponds with exactly one element y, or f(x), of the range.

In this week’s Algebra Talk, we will discuss the concept of a function along with some properties and examples.  Please start by addressing one or more of the following topics to get the discussion going:

1.  Give an example from real life where functions are utilized. For ideas, look it up on the internet or find some examples in the textbook.  Why did you pick this example?  How might you or your classmates use this in the future?

2.  If the domain and range of a function consists of real numbers, then you can graph it by plotting all ordered pairs of the form (x, f(x)).  How can you tell by looking at a graph if it represents a function?

3. What is meant by a “piecewise-defined” function?  Give a real-world example or an example using real numbers.
Example:  Here is a real-world example to help you explain what a piecewise-defined function is and to give other examples:
At a local pizza restaurant, it costs $15 for a cheese pizza.  However, if you buy more than 5 pizzas, it only costs $12 per pizza.  Thus, the cost of a pizza is given by the following piecewise-defined function:

4. Why are there usually two solutions in quadratic equations?

5.  Give an example from real life where quadratics are utilized. For ideas, look it up on the internet or find examples in the textbook. Why did you pick this example?
