Assignment 2: Critical Essay

Introduction

This essay of a minimum of 500 to a maximum of 700 words requires you to choose any one of the seven stories assigned in Modules 1, 2, and 3. You may not, however, choose the same story that you used for your diagnostic assignment. Perhaps just by reviewing the list of stories, you can identify which story you’d like to write about.

  • “Royal Beatings” by Alice Munro
  • “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
  • “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin
  • “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan
  • “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather
  • “Death by Landscape” by Margaret Atwood
  • “To Room Nineteen” by Doris Lessing

Assignment 2 contributes 15% toward your final grade for the course. Submit your paper as soon as conveniently possible. Although you’re not required to follow the suggested schedule in the manual, it’s a good idea to complete Assignment 2 by the end of Module 4 or roughly at the end of week five of the course.

Essay Topics

Choose just one of the following:

  1. To what extent is the protagonist of the story you’ve chosen responsible for the conflict or predicament he or she faces?
  2. How does the antagonist in the story you’ve chosen contribute to the story’s overall meaning?
  3. To what extent is the protagonist conditioned by his or her physical and social environments?
  4. How do the physical and social settings in the story you’ve chosen contribute to the story’s overall meaning?

Assignment 4: Review and Begin Course Term Project

By Sunday, November 4, 2012, begin preparation of a 12–15 page applied research paper, not including a cover page, reference pages and, if needed, any appendices, on the broad theme of “organizations and leadership.” Within this broad theme, the project should explore, in some depth, a topic related to the course objectives that is significant to you or your organization. Research shows that people learn effectively when working on real problems grounded in their own work experience. To this end, the project is designed to incorporate your professional work experience into the learning process in this course.

In developing the project, select a specific organization of interest to you. Think of yourself as an organizational consultant and assume that a senior manager has requested a thorough analysis and a recommended course of action to resolve an actual leadership and organizational behavior(LOB) problem that will make a difference to the future performance of the organization. If there appears to be more than one problem, you need to decide if they are separate or related issues. Keep the problem statement short and concise. Specify whose point of view you are taking to identify the problem (For example, you could interview a couple managers, describe their take on the key problem, and compare them with yours).

Focus your study on one specific LOB topic area. Your project may focus on any of the following topics:

    • Trust
    • Motivation

COMP-2

n this unit’s Assignment, you will write a persuasive thesis statement related to an argument for change and evaluate the effectiveness of that argument using the Toulmin Model. You will write three well-developed paragraphs addressing the following:

Part I: First of all, you will revise the provisional thesis statement that you generated in the previous unit Discussion. Make sure the thesis is concise (1–2 sentences) and clearly expresses a persuasive argument related to your topic. Then, identify what type of claim your thesis expresses (policy, value, cause, etc.) and discuss why you think this thesis will be an effective one. For more on creating effective persuasive thesis statements, review the following Writing Center resources:

Part II: Next, describe how you will use the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos to make your argument more compelling to your audience. You can review the Writing Center resource on the appeals here: “The Three Appeals of Argumentative Writing.”

Part III: Finally, evaluate your argument based on the Toulmin Model. Describe the warrant (assumption), note possible challenges you might face in supporting this argument and what rebuttals will be needed, and determine whether the argument is susceptible to any logical fallacies and whether qualifiers would help to avoid those fallacies. You can review the Writing Center resource on creating a logical argument here: “How to Support an Argument and Avoid Logical Fallacies.”

Noted below are the specific requirements for this Assignment:

  1. Title page in APA manuscript format
  2. APA manuscript format throughout (e.g., 12-point font, double spacing, and 1-inch margins)
  3. If any references are made to sources, they are cited in APA 6th edition style both in-text and on a separate references page

200 WORD RESPONSE to this post

I personally have not been a victim of a crime, but I do know of a few individuals who were victims of crimes. It’s unfortunate, but those individuals were murdered. I can’t say what the cost was but I’m sure the family was not prepared for unexpected funeral expenses. I do believe there was some type of financial compensation for their loss through a state-run victim compensation program.

Ethics plays a very crucial role in determining the moral and logical decisions in criminal justice research. Ethics provides the moral guidelines for the justice system and ensures the right decisions are made to serve justice to the affected people while preserving the civil rights of the parties involved. Through ethics, the accused and the victims are served with a balanced application of justice and fairness. Furthermore, ethics ensure that everyone acts in compliance with the law. For example, ethics allows the judge to understand when one is remorseful to get a more lenient punishment or impose a severe sentence when the accused has a criminal record of repeating the same offenses. Learning to report illegal activity in the locality for the benefit of the people in the community is part of ethics.

If a researcher is not ethical, they can be held accountable to the public. It also compromises the truth, avoidance of errors, and knowledge. This makes the research work irrelevant if the researcher cannot be rendered trustworthy. Additionally, a lack of ethics might cause the researcher to contradict patenting policies.

The media is becoming more prominent in crime prevention today. The media also facilitates the participation of people, globalization of culture, and the creation of public order and safety, making it easier to address security issues. However, the media can share critical information that criminals use to further commit crimes. Sometimes the media can make a situation worse by competing to get information out first. This can be controlled by filtering what is shared on the media to reduce getting information to criminals encouraging the growth of criminal activities.

How Citizens Engage in Community-Oriented Policing?

(need in 8 hours 100% plagiarism free)

Community policing should be a citizen owned effort. Of course the police and other city agencies should be involved when necessary but the most consistent and comprehensive effort should belong to the neighborhoods and businesses that are in the affected area.

Assume that you are a community leader in an area with no ongoing community-oriented policing effort. For this week’s assignment you are to evaluate the role of citizens in the community-oriented policing effort. How would a group of citizens assess the needs of the community and critically analyze what resources they have and need to make a positive impact? What would be the best strategy be for your group to engage with the police and other city agencies in this effort? It may be helpful for you to go to this website to view some Award-Winning Community Policing Strategies: https://ric-zai-inc.com/Publications/cops-w0451-pub.pdf.

Write a 1 page APA style paper.  Only the body of the paper will count toward the word requirement (title page and references are in addition to the 2 pages)

In your paper, cite at least 2-3 references using the APA style guide format for in-text citation.

Only one reference may be found on the internet. The other references must be found in the library (this includes EBSCO Host and the Gale Criminal Justice Collection).

This Assignment assesses the following course outcomes:

HN377-2: Evaluate developmental milestones of behavior based on psychological theories.

GEL1.1: Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard American English.

GEL- 8.3: Formulate a logical solution to a problem.

Talia, a 17-year-old biracial (Caucasian/Asian) female, is currently a senior in high school. She lives with her mother and her younger brother. The family is currently struggling financially. Talia’s parents divorced when she was 4 and her father moved away; their contact with him is infrequent. She sometimes feels as though a part of her identity is “missing” as she has learned very little about her Asian background and culture due to the absence of her father over the years. Talia has experienced a drop in self-esteem over the past year due to developmental struggles. She is beginning to feel pressure about her future plans and is having trouble making a decision. She has attended a vocational program for cosmetology during her junior and senior year, but is also interested in teaching or possibly culinary school.

  1. Using Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development or Marcia’s approach to identity development, assess Talia’s current struggle with her future plans.

  2. Examine the influence of culture and cultural identity on Talia’s situation.

  3. Suggest interventions to assist Talia in resolving her current conflict and to improve her self-esteem.

Curious Case: So far, the first six chapters have been very informative to me. I know a lot of

what the book is discussing, however I did not know the exact name for it. For

example, when giving an example of a misplaced modifier and a better way to

write the sentence, I knew the first example was a little off, but I did not

know that this was called a misplaced modifier. The most familiar part to me

was chapter six which discussed run on sentences. I am well aware of these and

how to fix them. When I was in middle school I used to have entire essays

filled with run on sentences. The most informative chapter was chapter two

which discussed nominalizations. I had no clue what this was and after reading

the chapter I now have a decent understanding of what nominalizations are, how

to recognize them, and how to fix them.

Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, Tammy Meyers took her daughter out for a driving lesson. As they

are driving down the road, a driver in a silver van recklessly speeds past

them, alarming Tammy’s daughter causing her to honk her horn at the speeding

van. In the blink of an eye, the van cuts off Tammy and her daughter and slams

on the breaks, running out of the car shouting threats at Tammy, “I will kill

both of you!” screams the man. Worried, Tammy quickly drives home to drop off

her daughter and picks up her son, who enters the car with an armed hand gun.

Bringing the gun for protection, Tammy drives the car away from their home so

the angry driver cannot find where they live. After driving in circles for a

while, Tammy and her son return home only to find the insane angry driver parked

outside of their home! Tammy screams for her son to take cover, and just as he

does, the deranged man shoots at tammy.

Two days later, Tammy’s husband and two children are huddled

closely around their beloved wife and mother in an intensive care unit. Two

surgeries later, Tammy is fighting for her life, barely holding on. Teary eyed,

her family holds Tammy tight as she takes her last breath, unable to fight any

longer.

Days later, the man who fatally shot Tammy is arrested and

taken down to the police station for questioning. He is put in a gloomy, cement

interrogation room to wait for the lead detective to question him. The single

florescent light in the room begins to flicker rapidly. As the murderer looks

up, he sees a dark figure standing behind the flickering light. As his eyes

come into focus, he makes out the figure to be a woman. Tammy is standing

there, glaring at her killer. Confused, the man begins to stutter, shaking in

fear, “wh wh what is th this?? Wh whoo are yyou??” Tammy, with a cynical grin,

responds “Oh I think you know exactly who I am.”

Moments later, police enter the interrogation room to find

it empty, with not a single trace of the killer. A thorough search is conducted

of the station and the nearby town. The man was never to be seen again. The

End.

Final Project: 5 page essay….

Paper: Your first research essay should be a fully completed work of 5 pages. Your topic may be related to the development of any idea that has already been expressed as part of the course; your thesis should be a synthesis of carefully documented research and critical analysis of this topic. The essay should incorporate the general parts of an academic essay—an introduction and thesis, a body of specific evidence/support/analysis, and a conclusion that emphasizes the answers to questions you may have asked within your research.

Your writing should address the Core Learning Outcomes of the course and the Instructor Specific Learning Outcomes, as specified on the syllabus. I have included them here for your convenience:

  1. Analyze the disciplinary content in its own context and in relationship to the issues, questions, and positions of other disciplines.
  2. Compare and contrast differences and similarities among the disciplines in terms of central concerns, values, methodologies, and relationships to public life.
  3. Synthesize diverse perspectives to achieve an interdisciplinary understanding.
  4. Analyze the relationships among academic knowledge, professional work, and the responsibilities of local and global citizenship.
  5. 3. Interpret and critique the possible “real world” connections or behaviors associated with the viewing or playing of media violence.

Instructor Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify, discuss and critique the representations of serial killers as heroes, celebrities, and icons in modern media forms. Explain the characteristics of the media forms, genres, and methods for each subject.
  2. Describe and analyze the popular culture forms that encourage audience identification or participation through violence or vicarious experience.
  3. Evaluate multiple perspectives, modes of inquiry and expression, and processes for decision-making in the disciplines.

Specifics

Your essay should conform to the MLA format for citations within the text and in your works cited. Therefore, your writing should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins, in a 10-12-pitch font. The grading of this essay will be based upon the objective skills we have focused upon in our course lectures and discussions—incorporating your research sources seamlessly within your own writing, building upon your skills as a “close-reading” expert and analysis of your topic, and answering the larger questions about “why” we are studying serial killers as heroes (as well as, “why” your topic is popular? important? significant? worthy of study? definitive of its audience?)

Discussion Question

Common Conditions That Impact Speech and Language

Through education and a greater awareness about communication disorders, early childhood professionals, parents, and other important adults in children’s lives can have a positive influence on children’s language development.
