FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

The Wish

by Roald Dahl

Under the palm of one hand the child became aware of the scab of an old cut on

his kneecap. He bent forward to examine it closely. A scab was always a

fascinating thing; it presented a special challenge he was never able to resist.

Yes, he thought, I will pick it off, even if it isn’t ready, even if the middle of it

sticks, even if it hurts like anything.

With a fingernail he began to explore cautiously around the edges of the scab. He

got the nail underneath, and when he raised it, but ever so slightly, it suddenly

came off, the whole hard brown scab came off beautifully, leaving an interesting

little circle of smooth red skin.

Nice. Very nice indeed. He rubbed the circle and it didn’t hurt. He picked up the

scab, put it on his thigh, and flipped it with a finger so that it flew away and

landed on the edge of the carpet, the enormous red and black and yellow carpet

that stretched the whole length of the hall from the stairs on which he sat to the

front door in the distance. A tremendous carpet. Bigger than the tennis lawn.

Much bigger than that. He regarded it gravely, setting his eyes upon it with mild

pleasure. He had never really noticed it before, but now, all of a sudden, the

colors seemed to brighten mysteriously and spring out at him in a most dazzling

way.

You see, he told himself, I know how it is.

The red parts of the carpet are red-hot lumps of coal. What I must do is this: I

must walk all the way along it to the front door without touching them. If I touch

the red I will be burnt. As a matter of fact, I will be burnt up completely. And the

black parts of the carpet . . . yes, the black parts are snakes, poisonous snakes,

adders mostly, and cobras, thick like tree trunks round the middle, and if I touch

one of them, I’ll be bitten and I’ll die before tea time. And if I get across safely,

We judge the film as an expression of ideas that reflect intellectual, moral, social, or cultural importance that influence our lives for the better.

“Tchaikovsky and Women in Art” Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  • Select one (1) composition by Tchaikovsky that you enjoy. Describe the music and subject matter of that work, and explain why you enjoy it. Explain the key reasons why you believe that compositions by Tchaikovsky continue to be popular with contemporary orchestras and audiences. Passionate nationalism, like Tchaikovsky’s for Russia, could be a feature of Romantic art and music and in the arts of the late 1800s. Give primary examples of music today (besides national anthems) that is characterized by nationalism.
  • Select two (2) paintings depicting females by both a male artist and female artist named within the Explore section. Compare and contrast these two (2) depictions of women, and comment on any general tendencies that you detect among artists of that era in this respect. Compare this situation in the late 1800s to the way females are depicted in our own modern times, using at least one (1) specific modern example.

Justification Report

Assignment 2.1: Justification Report – Part 1-0–

In Assignments 2.1 and  2.2,  you will be building up a formal, researched justification report (one part at a time) that culminates in a recommendation to implement a particular product, service, or program in your place of employment. This recommended product, service, or program should resolve a problem that you identify in your workplace and should be directed to your employer (even if you do not actually plan to share it with your employer).

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

  • Problem Statement (for Question 1)
  • Overview of Alternatives (for Question 2)
  • Criteria (for Question 3)
  • Methods (for Question 4)

Write a two (2) page, single-spaced report in which you:

  1. Describe in detail a problem at work, persuading and convincing the reader that it needs fixing.
  2. Provide a detailed description of two (2) possible solutions (“alternatives”) that could be implemented to resolve the problem identified in Question 1.
  3. Describe five (5) criteria that you will use to measure the worth of each alternative in Criterion 2. Note: The alternative that satisfies the most criteria to the highest degree will be the one you recommend later to your employer. Criteria are standards that the audience values and are therefore used to measure the worth of each alternative (common examples include cost, desirability, durability, efficiency, time it will take to implement, and practicality).
  4. Describe in detail how you will conduct the research needed to determine the best recommended alternative to your employer.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Corruption within Community Corrections

The police arrested Jack Daniels for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Daniels had no criminal history, which made him eligible for diversion.  If Daniels completes his diversionary contract within 90-days, the court will dismiss his charges. Daniels accept the diversion contract in which he must attend a group counseling meeting each week for 90-days given by Mike Ponzi a community corrections counselor.

Daniels happens to have a good job and makes 200,000 dollars a year.  After attending the first counseling meeting, Daniels feels that these meetings are beneath him and a waste of time.  At the second meeting, Daniels waits for all the other members to leave then approaches Ponzi, and says, “I would like to offer you two roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the Continental U.S.  All you have to do is sign off on my attendance sheet that I have to turn into the court to prove that I attended all my meetings.”

Ponzi replies, “I suppose it would not hurt anything to sign off on your sheet, you are not a repeat offender.  I will do it but if you ever say I did this, I will tell the court that you forged my signature.”

Daniels hands Ponzi the airline ticket vouchers.

Ponzi postdated the rest of the meetings on Daniels attendance sheet, signs off on it, hands it back to Daniels and says, “It is a pleasure doing business with you.”

Assignment:

In 2 to 3 paragraphs, identify the ethical system that you believe explains the scenario above- support your response.  Also, apply information from chapter 13 and discuss some of the consequences that may occur from Ponzi’s misconduct.  Give an example of how organizations can reduce unethical behaviors from community correction personnel.

Unit 9 Notes: Securing Debt

=======================================================================

Lori has a small nail and make-up business, but she is very creative and has a large inventory of cool new products in which she tries to interest her clients. Unfortunately, it is a very competitive industry and it is difficult to determine what would interest her clients. Lori has not always guessed correctly, and her business, which is unincorporated, has struggled; she already has 2 mortgages on her home to support it. Some of her suppliers allow her to carry their products on consignment but many do not and she has maxed out her line of credit with the bank.
Lori has now come across a new line of hair product which she thinks is very promising for the bridal market, which is the cash cow of her business. This hair product uses a special blow-set machine which she could buy or rent from the supplier. Lori intends to carry this product for at least 4 years and has calculated that the cost of buying the machine at the low financing rate offered by the manufacturer to preferred customers is the same as renting it for 23 months. Thus she would like to buy the machine, but the manufacturer is rightfully concerned about her debt situation.

Imagine you work for a small finance company. Lori has approached you to see how she can rearrange her affairs. What might you suggest?
