Chugiak’s Business Person of the Year

Specific Purpose: To introduce this year’s winner of the Chugiak Business Person of the year

Central Idea: Beth’s leadership, devotion, and sacrifice to her community during this past

year has led to her winning of this award.

Introduction

English poet William Wordsworth said,” That best portion of a good man’s life, [is] his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.” And this quotation certainly applies to our honoree this evening. I am thrilled at the opportunity to introduce our honored and distinguished guest this evening. Tonight we pay tribute to the leadership, devotion, and sacrifices that Beth Williams has offered to our community within the last year. All that she has done has led to this day and the award she is about to receive.

Transition: This award Beth has earned, she attributes in part to her supportive and

            service-minded family.

I. She and her family have lived in and served Alaska for 15 years.

    A. Her husband Jim is active in the community as well.

         1. He is a construction contractor for the Municipality of Anchorage.

         2. He is also an active member of the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department.

         3. He was on the 1995 Habitat for Humanity Board that built 5 houses for low

              income families.

     B. Her children Joe and Peggy both attend Birchwood ABC Elementary School in

          Chugiak.

          1. Both are honor students.

          2. Both have received citizenship awards for community service.

Transition: Beth modestly holds up the achievements of her family and how they have

influenced her to be her best, but let’s look at what Beth has done to benefit our

            community.

II. Beth has served her community in a variety of ways.

     A. First, she designed and oversaw the decoration of the Chugiak Youth Soccer

Association float for the annual Bear Paw Parade.

     B. And speaking of CYSA soccer, she has been a coach for five years, often staying

late to help the young athletes practice their skills.

     C. Next, she has served on the PTSA board for Birchwood ABC, orchestrating several

fund-raisers to benefit athletic programs in the school.

     D. In addition, she and her family were among the first to volunteer to pick up trash in

our community several times this year.

     E. Finally, she was personally responsible for organizing the Senior Center

Community Thanksgiving dinner which provided dinner for over 80 seniors who

would not otherwise have had a Thanksgiving meal this year.

Transition: With all these volunteer activities, it’s a wonder Beth has time for anything

else, but I’m just getting started in heralding her achievements. She also manages

        her own business.

III. So, let’s look at her contributions as a business woman.

     A. First, she created a non-profit business that helps young people find jobs.

            1. As part of her business, she created a database for coordinating babysitters with

                families.

            2. She also mentors small businesses in the Chugiak area to post job openings

                specially targeted to young people.

            3. In addition, she helps youth find apprenticeships in various career fields, by

matching them with experienced business leaders.

            4. Casey Connell, one of her success stories, said,” I don’t know what I would

have done without Beth’s help. She believed in me when I had given up on ever

finding work. No one wanted to hire a kid with no experience, and she got me

the training I needed to become a successful electrician. I’ll always be grateful

                to her.”

     B. Along with helping the youth in town, Beth takes the $10 registration fee that her

customer’s pay for her services and donates it back into various special activities

          within our community.

Conclusion: I think we can all agree that Beth is certainly deserving of this award. So

without further comment, I would like to offer the award of Business Person of the

Year to our own Beth Williams. Beth, please come forward to accept your

     award.

Final Paper

Choose one or two of the following aspects of Temperance (from Lecture 2 slides) and draw/expand upon the ideas (presented in the readings and lectures) to explain how these ideals could change/impact the way people discuss or engage in alcohol consumption. How would/could this be practically lived on a college campus? :

  • Temper (metal): Makes metal stronger but endures testing = Christians must become tempered in virtue to grow in relationship with God (recall the image of pruning the vine)
  • Temperature: Seeks thermal equilibrium and balance = Christians must gauge the climate of a room when discerning alcohol consumption.
  • Temporal (time): Seeks a proper time or season for something = Christians must balance celebration with ordinary life and leisure with work.
  • Temper (music): Allows harmonies to match up better = Christians must seek an inner harmony between the various aspects of one’s life.

Personal narrative accounts are encouraged but not necessary. Small narratives to accompany different theological/philosophical points can be helpful for illustrating your point. If you choose to use personal accounts, please do not let them exceed 30% (1/3rd) of your paper’s content. For example, if your paper is 6 pages long you can write up to 2 pages worth of personal accounts.

It is highly encouraged to draw upon the ideas and language of virtue, telos, and the worries of compartmentalization and objectification. I also encourage you to draw from Scripture and Christian Tradition.

Please have a thesis and develop your argument around this thesis.

(Once again, this information is centered on the Kirkpatrick Model in Chapter 7. The difference here is you need to talk about the four levels and why/why not each level was used/not used. Be sure to address each of the four levels).

Discussion Board 2 Replies

You will post a 250-word reply to 2 classmate’s threads. The reply requires a minimum of 1 properly formatted citation. Each reply must be completed by you, the individual student. Additionally, each thread and reply must reflect a solid Christian worldview through the use of at least 1 Holy Bible reference. Responding to a classmate’s post requires both the addition of new ideas and analysis. A particular point made by the classmate must be addressed and built upon by your analysis in order to move the conversation forward. Thus, the response post is a rigorous assignment that requires you to build upon initial posts to develop deeper and more thorough discussion of the ideas introduced in the initial posts. As such, reply posts that merely affirm, restate, or unprofessionally quarrel with the previous post(s) and fail to make a valuable, substantive contribution to the discussion will receive appropriate point deductions.

(Response from Tiffany F.)

Social disorganization, “An are that delinquency emerges in neighborhoods where the neighborhoods relationships and institutions have broken down and can no longer maintain effective social controls…”(Bernard, 2015, 144) These negative actions/behaviors become one that the residents of the neighborhood begin to believe in and feel themselves (Bernard, 2015).

An article discuss Flint Michigan, not only has there been a major water crisis but the article states that Flint Michigan is one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. and that is partially attributed to poverty (Hall, 2016). In many cities there is a certain level of social control that is no longer maintained. There is a lack in the interaction and involvement of the city and many times takes the citizens of the city to began initiative to encourage and prompt help on behalf of others. There is limited amount of action that can take place on behalf of the citizens that reside in a city. If it is poverty stricken and has little to no resources to come out of the poverty there will be little change in the neighborhood.

This is the second half to social disorganization, after living in poverty and realizing that there is no change, a sense of pride and hope is lost and there is a limited revered consequences that may occur for one’s behavior. With this, individuals can take on the mindset of the community, which is hopelessness, despair and a dis stain for the future. This has been the circular theme for many communities that deal with high delinquency rates along with poverty.

In my own personal experience, I grew up in a city where the poverty and despair was split down the middle. On one section of the town, there were wealthy doctors and lawyers, and the middle there were middle-class and not considered impoverished but minimally thriving and then there was the impoverished side with ghetto’s and mostly minorities. Although, there was plenty of money to go around the city invested their money in the areas that they desired and it showed. All the while, Community centers closed, and some began to deteriorate, the homes that were in the middle are not on the decline, and that is usually where some crime mostly settled.

The city has the choice to turn many things around but rather go around the perimeter and up keep those sections rather then fix and aid in the beautification and maintenance of the city. This would blur those lines of the “disorganization that begins to happen and create solidarity and growth.

Challenges of Adolescence

“[There is a] commonly held idea that adolescence is a time of storm and stress. But this stereotype holds true for only a small minority of adolescents. Most make adjustments to cope with the changes in positive ways” (Martin & Fabes, 2009, p. 445).

As noted in this quotation, adolescence is often perceived as a turbulent and difficult period of life. Although it may not be as stormy as popularly perceived, it can indeed be a stressful time in human development. Consider what you have learned and also draw on your experience regarding the challenges of adolescence and ways that important adults can support adolescents in working through those challenges. In particular, review Table 16.5 on page 549 in the course text for ways to enhance adolescents’ resilience.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post the following:

  • A specific reason (within the domain of physical, cognitive/language, or social-emotional development) why adolescence can be a “stormy and stressful” time in human development. Include both a positive way and negative way that an adolescent might respond to this challenge. Illustrate with a personal example from your own teen years or from the experience of adolescents you know.

  • Your ideas for how families, schools, and communities can provide guidance and support to help adolescents successfully deal with challenges they experience during this stage of development. Include personal observations about what works best to help strengthen adolescents’ resilience.

Topic 1: Physical Dating Violence

What is your reaction to the incidence of female perpetrators of physical dating violence? Do you feel this is an area in which more attention should be directed? Explain your response.

Topic 2: Teen Dating Violence

In the article “African Americans and Teen Dating Violence,” the literature focuses on teen dating violence in the U.S. and possible reasons for teen dating violence particularly in the African American  culture. This is one example, but there are many other cultures and subcultures in the United States and each has their own challenges when it comes to teen dating violence.

Choose a culture other than your own to study. What information did you find  about teen dating violence in the culture you chose that is interesting to you? Support your reasons.

Discussion

Plagiarism is often thought of in the context of academic institutions, but there are many reported situations outside of the classroom where individuals use ideas from other people without giving proper credit. While in school, the consequences may be reflected in a student’s grade. Outside of school, the consequences may tarnish a professional’s reputation and potentially bring legal action. The Learning Activities included resources to help you avoid plagiarism, and this Discussion will give you an opportunity to practice those skills. For another helpful overview of plagiarism, review the TED Talks  Punishable Perils of Plagiarism.

Find a reliable secondary source for an argument for change in your community or workplace. Then, choose a short passage that verifies or disputes your position. Respond to the following prompts in at least two well-developed paragraphs (not including the copied-and-pasted material from your secondary source):

Describe the source you found, the process you used to find it, and why you selected it. What makes this a reliable source? Does it support or refute your argument?

Paraphrase relevant information from a short passage in the source you found. Be sure to use in-text citations with any sentences reflecting ideas from the source, e.g., (Doe, 2013) or According to Jane Doe (2013).

At the end of your post, provide a complete APA 6th Edition style references page citation for the source you found and copy/paste the original text that you paraphrased. Be sure to label clearly the part that is copied (e.g., original). Also, label what you have written (e.g., paraphrase).
