NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.

For this assignment, you will be analyzing two more short stories, “Battle Royal” (which is the first chapter in Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man) and “The Birthmark.” As you read, reflect on the ways each depicts characters that are deemed socially unacceptable because of their outward appearances.

Please write a comparison/contrast essay of 1000 words or more discussing the questions below. Remember to begin your paper with an engaging introduction and clear thesis statement, develop each point in the body of your paper using examples and quotes from the stories, and conclude your paper with a restatement of your thesis and closing remarks. Also, be sure to maintain your credibility by including in-text citations and a reference list correctly formatted in APA style.

  1. Setting: Describe the settings of both pieces and identify how the eras in which they take place—with their distinct societal attitudes and customs—affect the main characters?
  2. Characters:
    • “Battle Royal:” Discuss the young man and his grandfather. Why do we never learn the young man’s name? What do the grandfather’s dying words reveal about him?
    • “The Birthmark:” Describe the main characters: Aylmer, Georgiana and Aminadab. What is important to each?
  3. Point of View: In which point of view (first- or third-person) is each piece told? If the point of view in “Battle Royal” was changed, would it have made the story more effective, or less so?
  4. Symbolism:
    • “Battle Royal:” Analyze the deeper meaning of the following: the “battle royal” itself, the naked blonde, and the young man’s dream at the end of the story.
    • “The Birthmark:” What does Georgiana’s birthmark signify, first to her and then to Aylmer? What does alchemy represent in the story?
  5. Themes: What are the main themes/messages of each piece? What, in other words, do you think the authors, Ralph Ellison and Nathaniel Hawthorne, are trying to communicate about life and human nature in their respective stories?
  6. Fear: What role does fear play in both pieces?
  7. Discrimination: Both stories address physical appearance, specifically one’s skin, and the way people may discriminate against others because of external characteristics they deem inferior. Compare and contrast how discrimination and prejudice are presented in “Battle Royal” and “The Birthmark.”
  8. Final Thoughts: Author Tim O’Brien wrote, “That’s what fiction is for. It’s for getting at the truth when the truth isn’t sufficient for the truth.” Talk about how literature might give us “truer” insights into the human experience by appealing to our senses, emotions and empathy. Describe a situation in which you or someone you know may have been discriminated against because of appearance, gender, race or another attribute. What did the experience teach you?

Discussion 1

Read the article, “Business Ethics in Asia: Lost in Translation?”

Based on the information presented in the article, consider business ethics in the global environment.  Explain the similarities and differences between ethics in the United States and in a global market such as Asia.  Describe how you will establish a code of ethics for the global marketplace.  What would be different and the same as an American code of ethics?  A situation arises that offends the foreign culture; what steps might you take to rectify the situation and improve the reputation of your organization?

Cite the textbook, Kent, and a third source when responding to this question.

Ensure that you respond to at least two students.

Discussion 2

Watch the video:

Examine a code of ethics from an organization of your choice.

Research Tip: Organizations often make their business ethics programs, codes of ethics, or codes of conduct public on their websites.  Be sure to include a link to your chosen organization’s business code of ethics in your post.

Consider the following:

  • Why might this organization need a code of ethics?
  • Which elements of effective business ethics systems, as described in your text, are utilized in your chosen organization’s program?
  • How does your chosen company’s code of ethics minimize risk?
  • What does the organization’s code of ethics say about the organizational culture?

Be sure to reference your textbook and at least one article or scholarly source to support your findings.  Include the link to your chosen organization’s business ethics program.

Case Study 2: Plain View, Open Fields, Abandonment, and Border Searches as They Relate to Search and Seizures

Officer Jones asked the neighborhood’s regular trash collector to put the content of the defendant’s garbage that was left on the curb in plastic bags and to turn over the bags to him at the end of the day. The trash collector did as the officer asked in order to not mix the garbage once he collected the defendant’s garbage. The officer searched through the garbage and found items indicative of narcotics use. The officer then recited the information that was obtained from the trash in an affidavit in support of a warrant to search the defendant’s home. The officer encountered the defendant at the house later that day upon execution of the warrant. The officer found quantities of cocaine and marijuana during the search and arrested the defendant on felony narcotics charges.

Write a one to two (1-2) page paper in which you:

  1. Identify the constitutional amendment that would govern Officer Jones’ actions.
  2. Analyze the validity and constitutionality of officer’s Jones’ actions.
  3. Discuss if Officer Jones’ actions were justified under the doctrines of plain view, abandonment, open fields, or border searches.
  4. Use at least two (2) quality references.

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format.

Forum: “Viva La Vida” Poetry Analysis

“Viva La Vida” Poetry Analysis!!!

For this discussion, we are going to consider contemporary songwriters as contemporary poets. In addition to poetic lyrics, music offers us melody and rhythm. Please consider both aspects of this genre AND our How to Analyze Poetry handout as you analyze meaning. So, let’s get our semester “rocking!”

Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” takes its name from a painting by 20th century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and translates as “Long live the life” in Spanish. The album’s artwork features the painting Liberty Leading the People (La Liberté guidant le peuple) by French painter Eugène Delacroix, commemorating the July Revolution of 1830. Please view the painting online:Liberty Leading the People

Here are the song’s lyrics – please read carefully:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemies eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
“Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!”

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I’d become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringings
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh

In your response to this song, I would like you to consider the following poetic elements and the Basic Questions for Rhetorical Analysis :

1. Who is the speaker in this song? What is the rhetorical situation (the situation/problem/conflict for the song’s speaker)?

2. What occasion or event (historical or personal) may have compelled the song writer to write this song? Is this song about the life of one person or are the song’s themes of religion and power universal to humankind?

3. What is the speaker’s intention? Coldplay’s album cover displays a famous painting regarding Napoleon’s French Revolution. Is this song about Napoleon? Is it about revolution? Personal or national liberty? Are there parallels to today’s leaders?

4. Who is the intended audience? What values does the audience hold that the author or speaker appeals to? Their are several references to Christianity in this song. What do the references symbolize? What do the references mean to the speaker of the poem? What is your personal reaction to “hearing” this song and “reading” the lyrics?

Please post an initial response of 500 words.  Kindly post a 3-4 sentence response to five (5) of your peers.  Please be specific, thorough, and POSITIVE in your responses.

Good luck and have fun!

MOVIE : Other People’s Money (Corporate fraud)

Discuss how the issue of white collar crime is presented in the film. Do not give a scene-by-scene description of what happened in the movie. Who starred or appeared in the film (i.e.: the movie stars) or who directed the movie is not important (remember, this isn’t a film class).  Your review should be a thoughtful discussion of the film and how it relates to white collar crime.

Your discussion should include:

Is the movie based on a true story?

What is the crime?

How does it take place?

Why does it take place?

Who are the characters involved (NOT the movie stars who play the characters – the characters

themselves – who are they, what is his/her profession),

How long does the crime occur before it is discovered?

How is it discovered and who/why/how is the crime discovered,

How did the discovery of the crime affect the offender’s reputation/status in the business?

community or his/her family; did it have any affect?

How is the crime resolved, was there a trial; if so, what was the outcome,

Did the perpetrator receive a prison sentence?

If greed is involved in your film, what motived the greed? (a father’s approval, perhaps? Or maybe resentment of insults the character endured in the past?)  In other words, is the greed based on something more complex than greed for money and arrogance?

Was the entity (i.e.: the corporation or agency) a victim or perpetrator, or both?

What do you think? Is the propensity to engage in unlawful conduct systemic; that is, is it inherent in a competitive, free-enterprise economic system in a society oriented toward the individual Or was criminal behavior caused solely by “bad apples,” rogue employees whose character flaws led them to cheat and steal?

Based on our class readings and discussions describe the extent to which the media’s portrayal of the crime was accurate. What does the research say about the particular crime that occurred?

Your paper must be no more than 5 pages in length. APA format required (DO NOT include an Abstract or Table of Contents for this short paper!).

Prologue:

Brooke Lynn Heights is a dispatcher for the Grantham County Sheriff’s Office.  Heights works the relief shift that covers the other dispatchers and Badpenny the supervisor, on their days off. At 11:30 a.m., calls coming into police dispatch have slowed down enough that Heights could go grab her lunch from the refrigerator. Heights is the only dispatcher on duty and she has answer calls while eating her lunch. Not long after Heights sat down to eat, Cher A. Secrit, who is a deputy sheriff and works for the Grantham County Sheriff’s Office, walked into the police dispatch area to eat lunch with Heights.  Deputy Secrit is a good friend of Heights and happens to be Badpenny’s best friend and roommate. While eating lunch, Heights asked Secrit, “Is Badpenny alright because she has lost quite a bit of weight in the last few weeks?” Secrit replied, “Badpenny told me that she is dating Mitch Dreadford.  When I asked her about her weight loss, because it is quite noticeable, Badpenny said she had been stressed out lately and extremely busy getting all the dispatch files ready for the police audit next week.”  Heights had a concerned look on her face when she asked Secrit, “Do you think she is using meth since she is dating Dreadford?” Secrit replied, “I had not thought about that until you mentioned it just now.” Heights said, “I am worried that Badpenny may be getting in over her head.  When I relieved her the other day; I saw Badpenny was reading a detective’s report from an ongoing drug investigation.  I asked her what she was doing, and Badpenny said she was just bored and was perusing some of the officer’s reports.” Secrit replied, “That is concerning because yesterday when I dropped by to see Badpenny while she was dispatching for the University City Police Department; she seemed startled by my arrival.  Badpenny quickly closed out of what she was reading on the computer screen.  I did not think anything about what Badpenny was doing.  However, when Badpenny made the comment that the University City detectives do not write their reports as well as the Grantham County detectives; I knew Badpenny was up to something.  Before I could respond, Badpenny lowered her voice and said, listen to this, and she told me what was in the report.” Height ask, “What was in the report?” Secrit replied, “Badpenny told me that while reading the Grantham County Sheriff’s deputy’s report, there was information in the document regarding a federal agent.  The agent’s name is Hans Cuff, who works for Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).  Agent Cuff is undercover and has infiltrated a local gang.  Also, noted in the report was the gang member’s name who gave Agent Cuff information on a large shipment of meth coming into town next week.” Height asked, “What is the name of the gang member? Do we know him?” Secrit said, “Yes, we know the guy; it is Mookie.” Height exclaimed, “Mookie the big-time drug dealer who is a good friend of Dreadford? Oh, this is not good.”

Assignment:

Review the scenario above and write a paper regarding the ethical themes and value systems, both Heights and Secrit face regarding Badpenny’s actions.  Discuss how discretion and duty play into this scenario.  Also, apply how the code of silence and the blue curtain of secrecy may prevent Secrit and Heights from reporting what each has discovered about Badpenny.

English 300 – The Laramie Project

In October 1998, 21 year-old Mathew Shepard was found savagely beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. “The Laramie Project” is the portrait of a town painfully forced to confront itself in the reflective glare of the national spotlight responding with love, anger, sympathy, support, and defiance.

In writing the original play, Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project interviewed approximately 100 Laramie residents, and included their own reactions to the crime and to the interviews they carried out. These interviews served as the basis for the play and the HBO film version we will be discussing in class. The film is structured as if it were a documentary; it attempts to re-enact and dramatize the events that occurred on that fateful night. Kaufman’s objective was to learn through the Laramie residents’ raw responses how the issues of homosexuality, religion, class, economics, education, and non-traditional lifestyles were reflected through this crime.

For your 1000 word written analysis, focus on how the crime against Mathew Shephard defined the culture, not just of Laramie, but of the entire United States. In addition to your analysis of 1998 American values, please consider this hate crime in light of today’s society. How would Americans react to such a crime today? Consider current and proposed legislation (and attitudes) towards hate crimes, gay marriage, gay parenting, and gay rights. You may include a reference to Queer Literary Theory.

You will need to make specific references to the people of Laramie and events that took place after Shepard’s beating, so keep a pen and pad handy as you watch the film. You need to refer to at least 5 specific scenes and people as portrayed in the film. Your grade will be based on the thoroughness of your analysis, the strength of your quotes/examples, and your thoughtfulness and openmindedness! You may write more than the 1000 word minimum, but please keep your analysis under 2,000 words!

Good luck and enjoy!

NEED REPLY IN 10 HOURS

Should there be true anonymity available to people on the internet or should there be an information super-highway driver license required for use?  Americans are accustomed to a certain amount of freedom and what they believe is privacy. Is it reasonable to change the rules for internet use?  If so would that make things better or worse? Historically, whenever a government has deprived the people of something, they have created a secondary market for it: gambling, liquor, drugs, sex, guns, and even information.

Are we in danger of forcing those users who want privacy to an underground or less visible option?  Oh, for instance some kind of darknet?

Explain your position on privacy v. governmental intrusion, but be sure to address the intended and likely unintended consequences of you policy.

PLEASE REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS)

                                        CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE

Anonymity equals no one knowing who you are, but seeing what you do , whereas, privacy is no one being able to see what you’re doing, but folks knowing who you are.  Just as freedom isn’t free, privacy is not private.  I constantly go back to the Unabomber’s thought process: technology will be the death of a nation, and literally it navigates, an underbelly for seediness at our fingertips.  Oh, yes the Internet is great, henceforth, me obtaining my degree through such a tool, yet my using it for positivity, someone at the same moment is using illegally, breaking some law, we can’t see, because they hide behind a computer.

I believe one of the best things I’ve heard: information super-highway driver’s license, for  hackers who have served time for their crimes; it s a great idea. Yes, in some faction the government ought to intervene with use of the Internet, only through misuse of services. Known sex offenders, should receive a restricted driver’s license.

From what I found, the cost of incarceration does not seem to be cost effective. With the amount that is spent on one inmate for a year, the cost of supervision would cost a lot less. The cost of putting an offender in prison was eight times that of putting the offender under supervision such as parole. As a tax payer, I would really want to see my money being used to help an offender stay off the streets.

Post conviction, the cost of holding an offender in an facility cost around $79.16 daily, $2,421 monthly and $28,948 a year. If an offender was held by an offender by supervision of probation officers would cost around $9.17 a day, $278 a month and $3, 347 a year.

While looking at those numbers, I feel that tax payers money is being wasted holding offenders in prison. There should be alternatives as to how to handle offenders before trail. Even just finding a alternative to that would save a lot of money.

When I look at the all the spending a state does to take care of a person, the cost is pretty much what a person makes in a year working a minimum wage job. Some states, it cost a bit more to take care of an inmate. It is a job to take care of someone else and frankly, I feel that our incarceration system really needs to reevaluate how they handle taking care of their budget.

Supervision Costs Significantly Less than Incarceration in Federal System. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.uscourts.gov/news/2013/07/18/supervision-costs-significantly-less-incarceration-federal-system

Second Reply to Shaka

After doing research, I don’t think that incarceration is cost effective. On average, it cost about $31,000 per year for just one inmate. Some states could cost up to $60,000 per year for an inmate. So those who may get sentenced to 25 years would use $775,000 of taxpayers money. Also, those who are sentenced to life in prison, on an average cost of $89 billion dollars. This includes housing, feeding, and clothing.

Doing additional research on probation and parole, it is cheaper than having someone incarcerated. It normally would cost $3.42 per day to put a person on probation which would cost at least $1,248.30 per year. But, when a person is placed on parole, it can cost up to $7.47 a day which would be $2,726.55 per year.

Although it would be cheaper to put prisoners on parole or on probation, there are those that deserves and needs to be behind bars. The amount of money that is being spent per year on criminals can take a major cut back if those who commit petty crimes can be given probation or parole because whichever route is taken, still wouldn’t add up to a one year sentence.
