Remember, this class is a culmination of all your classes at AIU, more especially, your Criminal Justice classes. The topic you select for your thesis should be carefully considered and one that can be covered in your limited amount of time while remaining interesting to you and your audience. Although you have received classroom instruction concerning the public sector careers, do not forget about the private sector careers. Did you know that one of the department stores has two forensics labs in the United States. One is in the western states and the other is located in the northeast, and both locations process fingerprints and other forensics evidence? Did you know that one of the fast food restaurants has a huge security department that is responsible for global security and an intelligence unit that tracks terrorism worldwide? Also, did you know that every professional sports team, most Fortune 500 companies, and amusement parks have security, quick response teams, and investigation teams? In the selection of your topic for your final project at AIU, examine all possible areas of interest both in the public and private sectors. Research topics of interest in which you would love to have a career.

Based on the feedback from your instructor and peers regarding your topic, finalize the thesis that you will pursue for your research. Now you will develop a research plan that will include the following:

·         Thesis statement: This statement presents the problem or issue you intend to research, and it should be clear and concise.

·         Hypothesis: This is a statement of prediction regarding the results of the problem or issue. Briefly identify your working solution to the problem. How might your working solution solve the problem? Be sure to note that your working solution will evolve through continued research and analysis.

·         Measurement and analysis approach: Define the key points that you will research and explain how you will gather and analyze the data you find. Intend to incorporate information related to technology and crime statistics that apply to your issue.

·         Applicable resources: Identify 5 sources that you have found that are the most relevant and best support your purpose statement. List the sources and then record the main idea as notes to use as part of your research later. Identify case studies, library, Web, and other scholarly resources.

·         Ethical standards: What are your ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure that your final report will be of the highest ethical standards?

Please submit your assignment.

Victimization Theory

Summarize the theory of victimization, describing its meaning and core concepts as it relates to the nature of crime.

Identify subcategories of the theory and describe each.

Apply the theory to one (1) real life example or scenario.  Briefly explain why the theory applies to the example you identified.

Rational Choice Theory

(This theory is completed for you as an example of how to complete the remaining theories)

According to this theory, crime is a matter of personal choice and the criminal makes a rational decision to commit the crime.

This view is that If a person is motivated, considers the choices, and they believe crime will benefit them without risk. (Siegel & Worrall, 2013, p. 45)

This view is that for the criminal, the profit outweighs the punishment.

One sub-category is the “Deterrence Theory” which aligns itself by indicating crime would not be a “rational choice” therefore not chosen if there was a strong enough fear of punishment, acting to deter the criminal activity. (Akers, 1990, p.2)

One real life case was that of Ariel Castro. This is the nationally televised case of a man who kidnapped and held three (3) women captive in his Cleveland, Ohio home for over 10 years, during which he physically and sexually assaulted, fathered a child and kept these young women captive until one managed to escape  2013. Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts including murder, rape, and abduction, to avoid Ohio’s death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole + 1,000 years by Judge Russo, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland where the crimes were committed. After being in prison only 30 days in Franklin County, Castro hung himself in his prison cell, ending his own life. I believe it relates to rational choice theory, Castro made a calculated choice to kidnap the missing teens and commit these crimes for over a decade, while working and interacting in the community. His motivation for the benefit of committing these crimes over a decade was stronger than fear of getting punished.

CH3 HOMEWORK:Alternative Dispute Resolution

Below is a scenario for you to analyze with your group. Draft a concise response (not to exceed 2 paragraphs) which incorporates the chapter discussion on awards including all Federal and State legislature. Explain how the material applies to this scenario.

Two brothers, both of whom are certified public accountants (CPAs), form a professional association to provide tax-accounting services to the public. They also agree, in writing, that any disputes that arise between them over matters concerning the association will be submitted to an independent arbitrator, whom they designated to be their father, who is also a CPA. A dispute arises, and the matter is submitted to the father for arbitration. During the course of arbitration, which occurs over several weeks, the father asks the older brother, who is visiting one evening, to explain a certain entry in the brothers’ association accounts. The younger brother learns of the discussion at the next meeting for arbitration. He says nothing about it, however. The arbitration is concluded in favor of the older brother, who seeks a court order compelling the younger brother to comply with the award. The younger brother seeks to set aside the award, claiming that the arbitration process was tainted by bias because “Dad always liked my older brother best.” The younger brother also seeks to have the award set aside on the basis of improper conduct in that matters subject to arbitration were discussed between the father and older brother without the younger brother’s being present. Should a court confirm the award or set it aside? Why or why not?

Emergency Management Technolo DB3

Click on the following link for the Phase 3 Reading Assignment:

Technology and All-Hazards Planning and Response

A crisis or an emergency may be one thing to one person but a completely different set of circumstances to another person. Often, a president, governor, or mayor is in a position to declare a state of emergency. In this particular scenario, a high-pressure underground gasoline pipeline is running underneath a section of the city. For this assignment, you will discuss what information should be included in an assessment to determine the potential damage or likelihood that the pipeline will rupture and explode. A C3 or Ccommand post is being preemptively established to address the situation should the pipeline explode.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:

  • What types of equipment do you think should be included in the C3 or Cfacility? Explain your reasoning.
  • How do you think the facility should be staffed?
    •  Consider education, training, and the interoperability and compatibility of equipment and personnel.
  • What types of technology do you think are essential to the strategic planning phase of all-hazards planning and response? Why?
    • How should decisions be made regarding the allocation of limited technological resources? Why?
  • Would you consider communications technology to be the most important technology for response operations? Why or why not?
  • What are the most significant problems or challenges associated with current communications technology? Explain.
    • What do you recommend for alleviating those problems and overcoming those challenges? Explain.

Assignment 3: Philosophical and Practical Approach for Balancing Issues

Before writing your position statement on Philosophical and Practical Approach for Balancing Issues, you should read Chapters 1 through11 in your textbook. Then, research at least three (3) peer-reviewed articles about individual rights, morality, ethics, individual rights, duty, or codes of conduct for criminal justice professionals.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

1.      Create a philosophy and approach for balancing the issues of individual rights and the public’s protection. Provide one to two (1 to 2) examples illustrating how you will balance the two issues in your own career in law enforcement.

2.      Determine a philosophy and approach for balancing the use of reward and punishment in criminal justice. Provide one to two (1-2) examples illustrating how you will use this philosophy in your own career.

Module 2 discussion

The use of squad cars and preventive patrol strategies was associated with a move toward police professionalism and a rejection of favoritism and corruption. After all, if the officer simply patrols the city in his or her car and reacts or responds to crimes as they occur, then there is no opportunity for the officer to indulge in corruption or to develop relationships with the citizenry that could compromise his or her objectivity and impartiality. A police officer dispatched to a dispute between neighbors or neighboring shopkeepers, neither of whom the officer has met, will presumably be able to bring a sense of objectivity to the dispute that one would expect of a neutral, noninvested third party.

Then, the community policing model was introduced. Officers were told to get out of the cars and get to know shopkeepers and residents.

Proponents of community policing argue that the rapport established with friends and acquaintances will allow the officer to resolve a dispute in a quicker, more informal, and less dramatic ways then would be the case otherwise. However, a police officer dispatched to a dispute in which the officer knows one or more of the parties may have a difficult time being neutral and objective. It may be difficult for the officer to tell a citizen who happens to be a friendly acquaintance of the officer that he or she is wrong, or worse, that he or she is going to get a citation or is going to jail.

Using the Argosy University online library resources, find at least two articles on community policing. To read more about community policing refer to the title “Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)” in the Webliography. This is a premier federally funded research organization and think tank incorporated in 1977. Some of policing’s most significant empirical studies, such as the Kansas City preventive patrol experiment and the San Diego experiment on one- vs. two-officer squad cars, were sponsored by the PERF.

Submission Details:

By Saturday, January 30, 2016, in a minimum of 250 words, post to theDiscussion Area your response to the following:

  • Is there a possibility of corruption when officers develop working or friendly relationships with members of the public as part of a community policing strategy? Why?
  • Are officers likely to treat citizens impartially when they’ve interacted informally with them on a regular basis? Or is the pursuit of an impartial, “just the facts, ma’am” kind of relationship with the public a mistake on the part of policing?
  • Do impartiality and barrier-of-police professionalism result in a lack of communication with the public, resulting in inefficient problem solving and effectiveness? On the other hand, are officers who have invested time and energy into building personal relationships with people better communicators and, therefore, more effective as police officers?

Be sure to support your positions by citing your research.

Evidence

You are the assistant special agent in charge (ASAC) of the Organized Crime Task Force. Your boss, the special agent in charge (SAC), is an accountant by his academic background. You, on the other hand, are an attorney by virtue of your academic background. The SAC has asked you to go over certain witness-related situations that will be testified to in an upcoming trial. The SAC has concerns about some of the witness testimony and is trying to avoid embarrassment by turning in records that may not be usable by the Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) prosecuting the case.

  • Tommy “Two Toes” D’Natalia has a certified public accountant (CPA). He has been using his accountant to wash ill-gotten gains through his racketeering. The SAC has a subpoena for the CPA. D’Natalia is claiming privileged communication with his CPA, and it prohibits the accountant from testifying.
  • Luigi “the Pipe” Cardone heard through the “grapevine” that Big Sal Salvatore has been telling everyone how he was told by Frankie “the Lip” Bonnano that Freddie “Fingers” Malone was murdered by his wife Slippery Sally Genovese-Malone. Cardone wants a deal to testify against Slippery Sally.
  • Lawrence ‘Lucky’ Livorno drove the getaway car for a jewelry store heist. Bertram “Bugsy” Bertoli and Little Carmine D’Angelo went in and robbed the store. During the robbery, Bertoli shot and killed the store owner. D’Angelo and Livorno both want to testify to avoid the death penalty.

Please include your answers in your main posting for the following questions. Support your answers with research on how arson crimes are investigated at the scene and follow-up investigation. You must provide meaningful feedback to the main postings of at least two of your classmates.

  • Identify which testimony is hearsay and likely to be inadmissible.
  • Identify which testimony is privileged communication and which is not
  • Identify how the “Best Evidence Rule” functions in relationship to the witness testimony being proffered
