Hadith Paragraph Assignment

The Kaaba is located in the al-Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca–the mosque was built much later.  There is much uncertainty surrounding the actual age and original construction of the structure, but it clearly is a pre-Islamic building in the form of a cube and made out of granite from the surrounding area.  According to Islamic tradition, the Kaaba was built by Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael.  Also according to tradition the Black Stone housed in the Kaaba dates to the time of Adam and Eve when it fell to the earth (dazzling white in color, later turned black from the sins of the world), but the stone/meteorite also predates the establishment of Islam in Mecca.  When Muhammad conquered the city in 630, he destroyed the idols around and the pictures within the Kaaba and remade it as an Islamic house of worship–the object of the pilgrimage, the Hajj.
The Kaaba is almost always pictured draped by the Kiswah (black cover), which, since the thirteen century, has been made in Egypt every year and then carried to Mecca by pilgrims on the Hajj.  The cloth is embroidered in gold with the profession of faith (the Shahadah).  The previous year’s cloth is then cut up and distributed.  Photo credit ZAK! Read the Hadith selections (along with the document background information and study questions) and answer the following question in a paragraph:

Citing specific evidence from the Hadith (not from the textbook), did this excerpt from the Hadith describe a religion that required an individual to follow a code of moral behavior?

Your paragraph should be about one-half page in length, double-spaced with one-inch margins, font size 10 or 12; it should contain a concise topic sentence (sentence 1) that directly responds to the assigned question (no need to define terms or cite a dictionary), and you should use direct, quoted material to support your points.  Your last sentence should be a conclusion.

Final Project

A Final Project is due the last class session.  The Final Project will contribute 30% to the course grade.

With instructor approval, students will select an organization that either has or is experiencing challenges with its compensation and benefit system.  The student will provided a brief historical view of the organization, an assessment of their current challenge, a review of other organizations who had a similar situation and the strategy they devised to address the issue, theories and strategies that should be contemplated to address the situation and, finally, a recommendation to management on how to address/resolve the situation.  Importantly, the student should ensure any recommendations are based on solid research and analysis and reflect a comprehensive solution to the problem.

The research paper should integrate items discussed in class, textbook material, and additional information gathered from secondary or primary sources.  A minimum of eight credible sources (other than the course textbook) should be used to develop your final project paper.  Research topics must be reviewed in advance with the instructor.

Writing the Compensation and Benefits Paper
These papers are to reflect the current “state of the art” in the area and should reflect both academic and professional (practical) orientations. Your final paper should be eight- to ten- double-spaced pages in length (exclusive of Appendix, References, Exhibits, etc.) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide. This final paper should review the available research, discuss the implications of that research for the topic area, and provide conclusions. The paper should be organized into the following areas:

  1. Introduction: The area of research should be described and the purpose of the research. That is, describe the topic area in terms of (1) its relationship the topic and (2) what you want to be able to contribute to the training literature by writing this paper. Your introduction must include a succinct thesis statement.
  2. Review of the literature: Organize the literature into logical streams of thought related to your topic area. Within each of these areas summarize what the literature has to say. Be sure to indicate in your discussion whether the information is based on empirical data or analysis of the author.
  3. Implications of the literature: Again, organize the implications of the literature in a manner that logically builds the case for your conclusions (which you will present in the next section). For each of your implications be sure to reference the literature related to that implication. Be sure to indicate whether the implication is one that has already been made in the literature or if this is one that is original to you through your own analysis. You should identify in this section important areas related to your topic that are missing from the literature. As appropriate within a business report, it is important to use section headings to organize your key points.
  4. Conclusions: This is where you tie all the pieces together. Make sure your conclusions are organized in a logical order that synthesizes your major points relative to the purpose of your paper. Be sure that your conclusions are justified and have credible support.  Inspire your audience to think about the practical application of your topic.  Remember, this is the last thing you are leaving with your reader so make the context of your message clear, communicate the impact of your topic, and leave a lasting impression.

Remember, your paper:

  • Must include a title page according to APA style.
  • Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought and analysis.
  • Must include section headings to organize your key points clearly.
  • Must include citations to references that support the assertions made and facts presented in the paper.
  • Must conclude a conclusion paragraph that ties directly back to your thesis statement.
  • Must use APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide to document all sources.
  • Must include, on the final page, a Reference List that is completed according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Compensation Philosophy

In a 3-5 page paper, outline the current compensation philosophy for your organization.  Evaluate this current philosophy and propose ways to enhance or revamp the current compensation philosophy to meet the changing needs of the organization and its employees. Identify key factors within the internal and external environment including the mission and strategic focus of the organization, as well as the financial and cultural aspects of your organization (i.e., you cannot have a compensation philosophy where you “lead” the market if your organization does not have the financial resources) that should influence this philosophy.  The proposed philosophy itself should be no more than a short paragraph.  The remaining portion of your paper should be devoted to supporting your choice of that philosophy within your chosen organization by identifying the key factors that should contribute to its development.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Defining Classical – 2 to 3 pragraphs

This is a discussion 1 or 2 paragraphs…..choose one rom the table…

WEEK 4 DISCUSSION -“Defining “Classical”;

“Defining “Classical”; Visual or Literal Early Abolitionist Art and Literature” Please respond to one (1)of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  •  Listen to one (1) composition (for a symphony) by Haydn or Mozart, either at the Websites below or in this week’s Music Folder. Identify the work that you have chosen, and describe the way in which the composition expresses the specific qualities of the Classical music style: Use the key terms from the textbook that are related to that particular music style, and explain what you like or admire about the work. Compare it to a specific modern musical work for which you might use the term “classic” or “classical”
  • Compare Neoclassicism and Rococo as styles and sensibilities. What do their differences reflect about patronage, popular taste, and historical change?  And how can you relate either style to today’s popular taste (or not)?
  • The United States’ Declaration of Independence, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, is one of the most influential documents in modern history, helping to inspire mass movements and revolutionary upheavals in America and abroad. Analyze the Declaration as a literary work.  What does Jefferson’s diction suggest about the American Revolution as a product of the Enlightenment? What does it suggest about how “revolutionary” the American Revolution was then?  And how can you relate it to today?
  • Explain whether you think an autobiographical or fictional account by a slave such as Phillis Wheatley and Olaudah Equiano, is more persuasive than a biographical or fictional account by a white author such as John Gabriel Stedman or Aphra Behn. In your explanations, use specific examples and consider both audience and the content and nature of the work. Identify a literary form example in modern times that you think is most effective at depicting injustice and why.
  • Explain whether you believe the representations of slavery in the visual arts such as William Blake’s illustrations, William Hackwood’s cameo, or John Singleton Copley’s painting were more compelling and convincing of the injustices of slavery than the literary representations already mentioned above. In your explanations, use specific examples and consider both audience and the content and nature of the work.  Identify an art form example in modern times that you think is most effective at depicting injustice and why.

The Birth of Islam

In Unit 5, we will focus on the rise of Islam and the development of an Arab-Islamic Empire. We will explore the life of Mohammed as well as the religion he founded, Islam, whose religious ideals and ideas are outlined in the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an. As a result of conquest and expansion, Islam quickly spread across the globe, from the Middle East through North Africa and into Spain. Exploiting the weaknesses of the Persian and Byzantine Empires and growing wealth from international trade routes, the early Islamic Empire flourished.

The Islamic Empire was a theocracy ruled by a series of caliphs, originally centered in Damascus and then Baghdad. During the Abbasid Dynasty (750 – 1258 CE), Islamic culture flourished and fueled not only Arab scholarship, but the revival of ancient Greek and Roman texts. As the Islamic Empire grew, it came into increasing conflict with other groups, including Christian Europe and invading Mongol armies from the Eurasian steppes. In 1258 CE, a grandson of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol empire, destroyed Baghdad, ending a golden age in Arab-Islamic history.

From the thirteenth century, the center of a new Islamic Empire, governed by the Ottoman Turks, developed in Anatolia (modern Turkey). At its height, the Ottoman Empire not only conquered the last Byzantine territories, including Constantinople itself, renaming the city Istanbul, but extended their rule throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and southeastern Europe. The Ottoman Empire would remain a formidable force in history until the early twentieth century. As we seek to understand the historical context of the Islamic religion, it is also important to understand how the religion has influenced political and social development, and how the Islamic society itself has evolved over time.

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Describe the origins of Islam and the development of a new Islamic society, including the difference between the Sunni and Shi’ite sects.

2. Explore the expansion and spread of Islam, including the early Arab conquest, Turkish and Mongol invasions, and Islamic influence in Africa, India, Central and Southeast Asia.

Topic 1

Unit Topic 1 – The Rise of Islam

In the deserts of Arabia a new religion was born in the seventh century CE. Led by a prophet named Mohammed, Islam emphasizes submission to Allah and the practice of the five pillars of the religion: to confess faith, to pray, to fast, to be charitable, and to make a pilgrimage.

Unit Topic 2 – Islamic Empires

During the seventh and eighth centuries CE, Islamic armies exploded out from the Middle East, conquering Persia, North Africa, and Spain. Islamic expansion was successful because of the weakness of the militaries and economies of the Byzantine and Persian Empires as well as the willingness of many people to convert to Islam.

Unit Topic 3 – Islam in Africa, India, and Central and Southeast Asia

During Mohammed’s lifetime, disciples were sent southwards, and by the thirteenth century, major Islamic empires existed in North and West Africa. Additional non-Arab populations were brought into Islam when the religion spread into India, culminating in the Mughal Dynasty, and Central and Southeast Asia.
