PAD 540 WEEK 9 DISCUSSION

“Social Welfare Programs” Please respond to the following:
“Social Security, established in 1935, is the most costly item in the federal budget. After the income tax, it also provides the largest source of tax revenues. The program provides senior, survivor, and disability insurance protection to most people who work in wage and salary jobs and to the self-employed. Workers and their employers each pay taxes equal to 6.2 percent of covered wages. The self-employed pay 12.4 percent of taxable self-employment earnings. Taxes are collected by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and deposited in government-administered accounts called the Old-Age and Survivors and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trust Funds” (Bosworth & Burtless, 1997).

Week 3 Discussion 2

Background: In 1938, in Munich, the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain made a deal with Adolph Hitler allowing Nazi Germany to annex Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland. Hailed as a hero for his diplomacy at the time, Chamberlain is now widely reviled for his policy of “appeasement” to Nazi aggression. Yet one year later, Chamberlain led Britain into war against Germany in defense of Poland once it became clear that appeasement had failed. By contrast, the US did little to halt Hitler’s initial expansion, and entered into the war only gradually, attempting, until attacked directly, to sway the outcome without going to war itself. Never again would the US remain so aloof for so long from such a momentous international affair. As such, the Second World War represents a turning point in American foreign affairs, and it is perhaps hard for us to understand why the US took so long to take effective action against the Axis Powers.

Resources: In your response, draw from material from AT LEAST TWO of the following documents and videos:

Instructions: Please post a substantive discussion post of at least 200 words that examines the evolution of American foreign policy in the 1930s:What arguments were made in favor of isolationism? How and why did America’s isolationist stance erode entering into the 1940s? How did American foreign policy goals shape the American approach to the war?

Liberty

American Government I

Liberty

In Lecture 1, we explored how “liberty” was interpreted by the Founders of the American Constitution. These Founding Fathers were influenced by political philosophers who argued that liberty is always at risk, and because of that risk, liberty must be protected, not just by the leaders of a nation, but also by the citizens.

While our founding fathers realized government was necessary to protect the citizens from criminals and outsiders (Lecture 2, comments about the King of England), they were concerned with amount of power the government should be given. To ensure that the people maintained power, the first Ten (10) Amendments (also called: The Bill of Rights) were added.

For this week’s assignment, write a 500-750 word essay addressing each of the following questions:

  • What is liberty? Provide a definition and at least one example.
  • Why does it matter? Explain what you think the citizens of a nation might gain or lose through their liberty.
  • What is your personal responsibility to protect it? Provide examples of what you can do, what you should do, and what you must do.
  • In modern times, do you think Americans have gained/maintained liberty in the way the Founding Fathers described it in the Constitution? Why or why not?

As in all your weekly written assignments, be sure to tie your writing to the readings for that week. You should strive to demonstrate to your instructor (and to the rest of the university) your full understanding of the course concepts being addressed. Don’t just answer the questions; really think them through. How will your ideas fit within Locke’s “social contract?”

Submit your work as an attached file. Double-space your paper and use 12 point Times NewRoman as your font.
