Assignment 1: Applications of the Scientific Method
Due Week 4 and worth 160 points

The scientific method is useful in problem solving and decision-making in a wide variety of fields. In this assignment, you will demonstrate how to use the scientific method to make decisions and solve problems in your field of study or everyday life.

Identify a specific problem often faced in your field of study or everyday life. Research your problem and assess your data / research. Examples of such problems could be:

  1. Business
    1. Developing a new product that is superior to competitor’s brands; or
    2. Establishing a price for a new product using the law of supply and demand;
  2. Information Systems and Technology
    1. The use of personal electronic devices for work purpose, or
    2. Determining in the most cost-effective computer for your business;
  3. Criminal Justice
    1. The reliability of eyewitness testimony, or
    2. Determining what evidence reveals to you about a crime;
  4. Everyday Life
    1. Selecting a particular brand of detergent, or
    2. Determining the most cost-efficient transportation / route for your commute.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Explain the scientific method and describe the overall manner in which you would apply it in your field of study or everyday life.
  2. Propose one (1) testable hypothesis to explain / solve the problem you have selected. State the expected outcomes of your actions and include criteria for determining whether or not these actions would succeed. Note: Your hypothesis should be stated very precisely.
  3. Describe the main actions that you intend to put into place to test the hypothesis that you proposed in Question 2. Describe the way in which you would evaluate the success of your program. Include the results that you would deem as a success and the results that would be considered a failure.
  4. Discuss the wisdom behind the strategy you would use to test the hypothesis from Question 3, and describe the additional steps you might take, depending on the results of your test. Note: These additional steps might be to revise your original hypothesis (if the results were unsatisfactory) or to propose new hypotheses. The goal is to continuously improve your understanding of the factors influencing your outcomes, to be able to achieve greater results over time.
  5. Use at least two (2) quality resources / references in this assignment. Note:Wikipedia and personal blogs do not qualify as quality resources.

Your report must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The United States is traditionally viewed as a two-party political system and in the state of Texas, the Republican and Democratic parties are the only consistent winners. However, Texas is often viewed as a one-party state. Review at least three news articles (published in Texas media outlets) that discussed this issue and explain their authors’ arguments, explain the reasons for describing Texas as one party state and discuss the likelihood that the state will continue to be dominated by one of the two major parties.

Do not forget to reply to another student’s post and include your word count.

Topic 1: Miranda Warnings

What are Miranda warnings? Research and discuss the pros and cons of having the Miranda warnings. There are some exceptions to the Miranda warnings; identify and discuss at least one of these exceptions.

Miranda warnings are a high point of contention in the law enforcement scene. There are many misunderstandings as to when “Miranda” applies. Watch the following video and discuss with your class the pros and cons of having the Miranda warning. Also discuss the different situations where Miranda may or may not apply. Search online for the Casey Anthony case, and look for videos or information on how the attorneys try to get their client off by questioning police procedures. What could the results be if Miranda warnings are not applied correctly? Do you see any relation to the famous case of New York v. Quarles?

Dissection 1

As technology continues to develop and advance, we are exposed to greater impacts on everyday life. This holds true especially for advances in media technology. The media is a universal aspect of life on a day to day basis. A time when it really becomes prevalent is in regards to government and political information. The Internet has become an important tool for people around the world to not only gain political knowledge, but to engage themselves in the political process itself. Some scholars suggest that this may “revitalize democratic society, enabling citizens to command the political and economic resources needed to become effectively self-governing” (Winner, 2003,p. 167). I use this reference to express just how times have changed because of this social networking medium. The idea that the Internet may create a shift in how certain people view democracy is not a new one. The revolutions of the newspaper, radio, and television each raised the same questions. Certain media sites share news from a conservative perspective while others are more liberal, and this is an ongoing debate in society, is there such a thing being able to learn about a situation, without having your views challenged, or have reassurance that you are right in how you see our current situation. My point being, it is difficult to find different issues than those in previous posts have discussed, because other than a few controversies different media outlets, report on what they feel is important, making it hard to establish what really is a problem or important.

Multiple media sites such as; CNN, NY magazine, Whitehouse.gov, bbc, MSNBC, FOX and CBS to name a few outlets have covered heightened controversial issues such as the enforcement on immigration (Travel ban), retracting the Affordable Care Act, interrogation techniques, border patrol, building and funding of a wall, to name a few. When we read the news, it feels like literally the only thing ever being spoken about are the horrible things happening in this world. But when it comes to politics, why do media outlets pick and choose what to speak about. Take CNN and ABC, at one point, prior to FOX news surpassing other media reporters in ratings, had the biggest audiences, however, according to business insider, they also were also not the most trusted in America. Conservative leaning outlets seem to be the least trusted, yet liberal outlets also, ranked lower than Wall Street journal and NY times. Once a media outlet establishes who their audience is, they can then adjust what content they will focus on because that is how you keep people coming back for more, how you can relate to them.

Pal discusses criteria related to that of implementation and how certain indicators can be used to determine whether a policy can actually be successful, depending on administration standards, and provided that these new policies are free of conflict, no external constraints, valid theory and any miscommunication between the parties of interest, to include the developers of said policy and the citizens. Depending on the majority of which political party controls the house, policies may lean more in favor of their best interests, while still benefitting the nation as a whole, just not as much perhaps. Let us use California as an example, a blue state, has been at the forefront of refuting a lot of policies/ executive orders being passed by our current administration. Here we see a gap between state and federal governments, not being able to work together, which in turn I feel questions pal in a way that how can a policy ever be “successful” if there is such dissonance within the different levels of government.

Dissection 2

The new presidential administration has been in the news for a variety of different policies and proposed laws over the past 50 days or so.  The news media has focused on two big issues during the last couple weeks.  The first issue that has received around-the-clock coverage over the last month has been immigration.  The topic of immigration has been a wide-ranging issue because of the increased number of arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants as well as the affect of the president’s executive order travel ban.  One of the reasons that this issue has received so much attention is due to the fact that there seems to be no agreement upon the objectives of this administration’s policies.  The is a sharp contrast in what is being told to the public and what is actually being implemented.  This is why the president’s executive order was stopped by the courts.  There was not a clear alignment in the thinking of the administration and the language of the executive order.  There has also been a lot of discussion about the increase in military spending and how it will affect other aspects of the president’s first budget.  The president stated this past week that he intends to increase military spending by $54 billion and in the process there will be severe cuts to “education, the environment, science, and poverty” (Shear & Steinhauer, 2017).  The cuts in federal programs will also look to benefit retirees as well as defense spending.  This has received a fair amount of media attention as well because of how large our military budget is compared to many of the other areas of federal spending.  These issues do deserve a there share of media attention but there are other policy issues that deserve much more attention.  There has been little mention of how what investments will be made to the nation’s crumbling infrastructure.  It also seems that the issue of health care slips in and out of media coverage as well.  I think the media has focused on military spending and immigration for a few reasons.  The increase in military spending comes at the expense of many other federal programs that people rely on.  The president has also said that “We have to start winning wars again” and that when he was young “We never lost a war” (Cesca, 2017).  This has many in the media speculating whether or not the country is preparing for armed conflict in the near future.  Immigration has received a large amount of media coverage because it is an issue that touches close to home for many people.  Many people are related to or have friends or acquaintances that are in the country illegally.  Whether people agree on the topic of immigration, nearly everyone is affected by it in some fashion or another.  The coverage of these issues is definitely covered different based on the network reporting the story.  Fox News will report these issues in a way that is supportive of the president.  MSNBC will largely report the negative effects of these policies.  CNN does a better job of reporting reporting the facts without bias but they still lean slightly left in their reporting.  Many of the problems that have arisen from these policies is in how they have been presented to the public.  There is a clear difference in the way policies are explained by the administration and how they are being implemented.  The policies lack many of the elements for successful implementation as listed in the Pal text.  The policies lack proper design and there appears to be a lack of communication in the creation of these policies.

Assignment 3: Obesity in America

Due Week 9 and worth 65 points

Obesity in America is considered an epidemic. There are many contributing factors to obesity (both childhood and adult), such as biological, environmental, social, or economic factors. Review the information on obesity on pages 419 to 421 in the textbook. You may also use the Internet or Strayer Library to research obesity and its causes.

Suggested Reading:

Write a one to two page (1-2) page essay in which you:

  1. Describe the effect that obesity (childhood and / or adult) has had on you personally or your community.
  2. Select one (1) contributing factor to childhood or adult obesity. Recommend two (2) preventative measures related to the selected factor that people can take in order to reduce their chance of becoming obese.
  3. Discuss one (1) sociological theory that relates to the selected contributing factor to obesity.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • To keep this essay short and manageable, your only sources for the essay should be the article from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the sections noted in your text. For this reason, APA citations or references are not required for this assignment.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Define the basic concepts used in the discipline of sociology.
  • Explain the major theoretical paradigms of sociology.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in sociology.
  • Write clearly and concisely about sociology using proper writing mechanics

week 4.322

In Chapters 6 and 7 of Davidson et al. describe the organization of Congress and committees along party lines. Leaders are said to “stand at the intersection of the two Congresses” (155) and face the task of resolving the collective action problem of members who “want to dodge the responsibility for making the compromises necessary to pass legislation” by “devising sufficient incentives (political, policy, or procedural) to attract majority support” (132f). However, Davidson et al. concludes, “typically party leaders cannot command their colleagues. Their leadership rests chiefly on their skill in giving others reasons to follow them” (161).

You might consider this an implicit limitation imposed on Congress by the political process. Remember, Chapter 2 describes limits on Congress, both explicit and implicit. Explicit limits on the power of Congress include prohibitions against bills of attainder and ex post facto laws, but Davidson (22) also notes that the political process and dependence on the people is an implicit limitation and cites The Federalist No. 51.

The Federalist No. 51 concludes with a discussion of the separation of powers. The separation of powers is implicit in the Constitution, and the Court has relied principally on The Federalist Papers for understanding it and the implicit limitation that “it is the reason of the public alone that ought to control and regulate the government” (No. 49).

After reviewing the course readings on The Federalist Papers, select 1 of the following structural elements from The Federalist Papers: large republic, free suffrage, length of term, or size of Congress. Explain how the chosen structural element contributes to meaningful deliberation and the public good.

Executive Orders, A Travel Ban on Hold, and Separation of Powers

Executive Orders, A Travel Ban on Hold, and Separation of Powers

Executive Powers

Article II of the US Constitution generally describes the office of the president of the United States. During the constitutional convention of 1787, the drafters created this new kind of executive official, one that would be head of state and government but whose powers would be constrained. Over time, presidents have expanded their powers not by having the Constitution amended but simply by taking on more power. An example of this is the executive order compelling governmental agencies to act in certain ways specified by the order. There is no mention in the Constitution of a specific power to issue executive orders, but the power itself has been determined to be a constitutional exercise by presidents. If, however, any president over-reaches in the exercise of this power, the courts can, via separation of powers (judicial review), declare an executive order unconstitutional or illegal.

Soon after inauguration, President Trump issued an executive order (Executive Order 13769, titled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States) suspending the admission of refugees into the United States and barring the entry of individuals from seven predominantly Muslim nations. The original executive order was replaced by another in March (Executive Order 13780, titled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States); a “watered-down, politically correct version” of 13769, according to the president. The modification was the result of several federal district and appellate courts barring the enforcement of the executive order. Recently, President Trump asked the United States Supreme Court to take up the issue for a final determination about the legality and enforceability of the executive order.

The so-called (by President Trump) “travel ban” raises a number of questions about the exercise of executive power, the courts, civil liberties, civil rights, and foreign policy. For background information, please read this article from the British newspaper The Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/25/trump-travel-ban-blocked-federal-appeals-court (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Please feel free to consult other sources of information should you need further background. There are Wikipedia articles that do a good job providing details about the actions of the several courts that have been involved in this issue (and I have no problem with students consulting Wikipedia, though it is not a reference one should use for academic research).

Instructions

Your Discussion response will focus on the relationship of civil liberties and civil rights to the travel ban in addition to some of the separation of powers issues that the topic raises. Specifically:

  • In what ways is this a civil liberties issue?
  • In what ways is this a civil rights issue?
  • Do you believe the federal courts will ultimately rule against President Trump’s executive order or do you believe the president can modify it in such a way that it will pass judicial review?
  • If the Supreme Court rules that President Trump’s executive order is enforceable, how do you think it will influence US Foreign policy?
  • What have you learned by doing this assignment?

I recommend organizing your essay into five paragraphs that address each of the elements of the assignment listed above. This structure will keep you focused on what is required and it will ensure that you respond fully. This is an essay that requires you to think about the topic, the assigned readings from chapters 4, 5, 12, 13, 17. The textbook does not provide answers; rather, it provides information and context from which you develop a response that demonstrates to me your understanding of course content. There is no one correct response.

The minimum word count for your essay is 270 (this translates to one page, double-spaced, 12-point Ariel font, one-inch margins). If you fail to meet the minimum word count the highest scores you will earn is 60% of possible points (15/25). All students have the opportunity to earn full credit—100% of possible points (25/25)—if all instructions are followed carefully, you proofread your response to minimize writing errors, and you submit on time.

Remember, you must write in your own words—no quotes or paraphrases or plagiarism from any other source. You do not need to cite the Guardian article because it provides the background for the assignment. Do provide a works referenced list from any other source you consult when preparing your response.

Organizing the Research Paper & Outlining

You have probably asked yourself this question:  Why an outline? Well, here is my answer. You need a Strategic Plan.  In fact, if you want, you don’t even need the term “outline”…but replace it with “strategic plan”.  Strategic planning will take time and effort but the research paper will be made easier with good planning and patience. The time and effort put into developing an effective strategic plan will save you time and effort in the coming weeks.

The process of identifying what the paper’s purpose it and then how to achieve this purpose is known as strategic planning. And it’s important for any organized paper.  Without a clear picture of where you paper is headed the path will be rocky. There will be indecisiveness, second guessing and heading off into directions that you don’t want to pursue.

To help you get started in this process, watch the following video on YouTube and then complete the Collaboration Forum for the Unit 4 Introduction.

The following YouTube video may help you envision how to set-up your outline as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deQzQcOVja8

The Fourth Lecture: Organizing An Essay by Outlining.  Often student writers are taught short-term solutions to the problem of organizing an essay. The most common short-term essay is the “five-paragraph essay” format. The five-paragraph essay uses the following organization:

  1. Introduction–Background and thesis
  2. First Body Paragraph–The first reason why the thesis is true
  3. Second Body Paragraph–The second reason why the thesis is true
  4. Third Body Paragraph–The third reason why the thesis is true
  5. Conclusion–Recap of essay

It is easy to see how you could arrange an outline around the five-paragraph essay.  However, most student writers find that college professors often demand far more expansive essays.  Indeed, student writers should know that an essay’s organization can be pre-planned.  What follows are some common ways to organize a research paper.

Using Examples: The Essence of a strong Outline

Often students are asked to consider large and important issues in their writing assignments. These so-called “big ideas” essays present students with some large generalization and then ask students to analyze it. For example, in a political science class a student might be asked to write an essay on the freedom Americans have, and how it compares to that enjoyed by citizens of Mexico. Or in a psychology class a student might be asked to write an essay on the importance of honesty in personal and professional relationships. Both of these topics require students to answer difficult and possibly unanswerable questions. Because students feel the need to discuss all possible aspects of the topic, students respond to such general topics by writing broad and unspecific essays full of generalities. As you learned in Unit 3, the solution to this is Writing that Uses References! Students need to focus their discussion of the large and general issue by focusing on specific examples. A good outline, like an essay, presents more examples than ideas.

ASSIGNMENT 1

This concept is introduced to you early on in this week’s readings and two characters are mentioned in detail: Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Both were captains of industry and financial geniuses, earning millions upon millions and expanding their business empires across the country.

My questions for you are:

Carnegie invented “Vertical Integration” and Rockefeller invented “Horizontal Integration.” What were the advantages and disadvantages of each?

More importantly, do you think that these business practices were ethical?

The Emergence of Big Business: Friend or Foe?

Welcome to Week 5, where we start to see the emergence of the “modern” America that we’re all familiar with!

In order to start this discussion, I’d like to bring our attention to the section entitled “The Emergence of Big Business,” on page 470 of Chapter 16 of our text. It does a great job outlining the massive changes that businesses went through in the post-Civil War Era. In particular, it talks about how why “big” business emerged during this period and their effects on the consumer, worker, and the American economy as a whole.

Your job is to try to answer the following question: Was the expansion of big business a net positive or net negative for American society? Be careful! It is easy to demonize corporations and “Big Business,” but as students of history we cannot take sides. We need to construct our opinions based on the evidence provided, which in this case is our course text.

Make an argument and feel free to disagree with your classmates! I look forward to hearing what you come up with.

The book is Visions of America: A history of the U.S by Keene et al
