Topic 1: Abused Women

Often, society does not understand the dynamics of abuse and why abused women often stay with their abusers over long periods of time. What are the realities for the abused woman? How do these realities affect the treatment of battered women?

Topic 2: Models of Treatment

In reality, models of treatment are often broken down into parts depending on the needs of the client. If you were treating a client with a chemical dependency, which parts of the various models of treatment as well as the format of treatment (group, individual) would you use? Provide a rationale for your selections.

Topic 3: Team Meetings

How can a supervisor conduct an effective team meeting? What are some of the necessary elements and why are they necessary?

Topic 2: Personality Assessment

For this Discussion, you will take a short 60-question personality assessment.

Before you can take the personality assessment, you will have to register on the Brainbench website. View step-by-step instructions on how to register for the personality assessment.

Impersonal Policing vs. Community Policing

The use of squad cars and preventive patrol strategies was associated with a move toward police professionalism and a rejection of favoritism and corruption. After all, if the officer simply patrols the city in his or her car and reacts or responds to crimes as they occur, then there is no opportunity for the officer to indulge in corruption or to develop relationships with the citizenry that could compromise his or her objectivity and impartiality. A police officer dispatched to a dispute between neighbors or neighboring shopkeepers, neither of whom the officer has met, will presumably be able to bring a sense of objectivity to the dispute that one would expect of a neutral, noninvested third party.

Then, the community policing model was introduced. Officers were told to get out of the cars and get to know shopkeepers and residents.

Proponents of community policing argue that the rapport established with friends and acquaintances will allow the officer to resolve a dispute in a quicker, more informal, and less dramatic ways then would be the case otherwise. However, a police officer dispatched to a dispute in which the officer knows one or more of the parties may have a difficult time being neutral and objective. It may be difficult for the officer to tell a citizen who happens to be a friendly acquaintance of the officer that he or she is wrong, or worse, that he or she is going to get a citation or is going to jail.

Using the Argosy University online library resources, find at least two articles on community policing. To read more about community policing refer to the title “Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)” in the Webliography. This is a premier federally funded research organization and think tank incorporated in 1977. Some of policing’s most significant empirical studies, such as the Kansas City preventive patrol experiment and the San Diego experiment on one- vs. two-officer squad cars, were sponsored by the PERF.

Submission Details:

in a minimum of 250 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:

  • Is there a possibility of corruption when officers develop working or friendly relationships with members of the public as part of a community policing strategy? Why?
  • Are officers likely to treat citizens impartially when they’ve interacted informally with them on a regular basis? Or is the pursuit of an impartial, “just the facts, ma’am” kind of relationship with the public a mistake on the part of policing?
  • Do impartiality and barrier-of-police professionalism result in a lack of communication with the public, resulting in inefficient problem solving and effectiveness? On the other hand, are officers who have invested time and energy into building personal relationships with people better communicators and, therefore, more effective as police officers?

Be sure to support your positions by citing your research.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, research and develop within 350 words an overview of Cyber and CBRN threats to the U.S. Be sure to include the following:

  • Briefly discuss the main categories of CBRN threats and how they differ. Summarize the main aspects of the WMD Prevention and Preparedness Act of 2010.
  • Discuss in detail the one method of CBRN attack that you feel poses the most serious threat to the U.S. and why you feel this is a threat. Support your assertions with your research.

Briefly discuss the risks posed to the private sector and to government from cyber threats.

Briefly discuss measures that can be implemented to protect systems from hacking, malware, or theft.

Your response should include references to the assigned documents.

Please be substantive and clear and use examples to support your ideas.

Assignment 9

Throughout this unit, you have learned about many changes and social problems that impact families. In this Assignment, you will choose one of the three following social problems that impact families: divorce, one-parent families, family violence.

Project Specifics:

  • Your paper should be between 800 and 1000 words, double spaced, not including your title and reference page.

  • Use the textbook and at least three outside references from the library or other reputable sources to support your project.

  • Please use the Research, Citation, and Plagiarism document found in Doc Sharing to help you with formatting your project, or ask your professor for assistance.

Part I: Begin your paper with a discussion of the social problem you have chosen and explain why you have chosen this particular social problem.

Part II: As human services professionals, it is important to be able to view social problems from multiple perspectives. There are often many people involved in a social problem. Some of the different people involved in social problems like divorce, one-parent families, and family violence are the mother, the father, and children. All of these people will be impacted by the problem in a unique way, and they may have different perspectives about what is occurring. With Part II, you are going to have the opportunity to examine the social problem you chose from multiple perspectives.

If you chose divorce or one-parent families, discuss how the parents and the children involved view the issue. If you chose family violence, discuss how the abused woman, and the children involved view the issue.

Part III: Conclude your paper by discussing how society views the social problem that you wrote about. In addition, discuss your role as an advocate. How can you work to create awareness and teach others about diversity and multiculturalism.

Amending the U.S. Constitution

Ashford 2: – Week 1 – Discussion 2

Amending the U.S. Constitution

The formal process of amending the Constitution is cumbersome and slow.  While this fact explains why relatively few amendments have been adopted, it does not discourage advocates of constitutional change from proposing them. Four amendment proposals that have gained considerable attention are the Balanced Budget Amendment, the Birthright Citizenship Amendment, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the Overturn Citizens United Amendment. Select one of these proposals as the topic of your initial post and use the assigned resources to inform yourself about its purpose and the arguments of its supporters and critics.

Before writing your initial post, review the assigned resourcesTo easily access the resources from the Ashford University Library, please see the table located in the Course Materials section.

In your initial post of at least 200-250 words, briefly summarize what the proposed amendment would do and the problem its proponents say it will solve. Explain the main pros and cons in the debate about the amendment. Evaluate the proposed amendment from two perspectives:

  • Your own political philosophy, values or ideology. (Justify your assessment by clearly explaining your political values and why they lead you to support or oppose the amendment.)
  • The likelihood that the proposed amendment will eventually be ratified to become part of the Constitution. (Justify your assessment by explaining how the proposal will or will not, in your judgment, survive the ratification process.)

Fully respond to all parts of the question. Write in your own words. Support your position with APA citations to two or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Please be sure that you demonstrate understanding of these resources, integrate them into your argument, and cite them properly.

By Day 7, respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts. Your peer responses each must be at least 75 words. They must demonstrate critical thinking (e.g., ask a relevant question about your peer’s post while explaining why your question is significant, or state a perspective that contrasts with your peer’s while explaining or justifying your position).

A-9

Police Technology

New technology represents an important force multiplier for police agencies. Recent advances in the arena of high-tech gadgetry, software, and hardware may allow police departments to gain critical advances in the areas of response times, productivity, and safety. Police administrators realize that criminals are becoming more sophisticated and, as a result, police agencies must also increase their knowledge and use of technology if they are to keep pace with today’s criminal. In addition, the recent reduction in many law enforcement budgets has highlighted the need for greater use of technology in an effort to work smarter through the application of technology resources.

Chapter 14 “Technology Review” provides exploration and analysis of the important technological advances and applications in the field of law enforcement. The chapters reveal advances in technology, from computer information and application systems, to gadgetry or tools that will aid in the capture of criminals. This technology also aids in limiting or eliminating potential injuries to officers and the suspects that they intend to detain or arrest.

Write a 3-page paper (excluding the cover and references page) using APA format and three to five references that responds to the following:

Your paper should identify the most useful and potentially beneficial emergent or currently applied technology that you believe will aid law enforcement in the performance of their public safety mission. In the course of the paper, please identify four technologies and explain their applied value to police agencies.

As an example, if you identify a technology that is a suspect apprehension tool, please explain the value of the gadget (i.e., taser), how it is applied in the field, why it is of demonstrated benefit to officers, and what you believe the impact of the use of the technology item will be to both the law enforcement agency and also the public that they serve. The same principles would apply for computer software or hardware components. Again, the key is to fully explain the usefulness of the items in their application and benefit to the law enforcement field.
