Discussion

The following scenario is based on an actual attack deconstructed at a seminar I attended earlier this year. The names and locations have been removed to preserve the privacy of the organization in question.

Background:

No-Internal-Controls, LLC is a mid-sized pharmaceutical company in the Midwest of the US employing around 150 employees. It has grown over the past decade by merging with other pharmaceutical companies and purchasing smaller firms.

Recently No-Internal-Controls, LLC suffered a ransomware attack. The company was able to recover from the attack with the assistance of a third party IT Services Company.

Attack Analysis:

After collecting evidence and analyzing the attack, the third party was able to recreate the attack.

No-Internal-Controls, LLC has a number of PCs configured for employee training

These training computers use generic logins such as “training1”, “training2”, etc. with passwords of “training1”, “training2”, etc.

The generic logins were not subject to lock out due to incorrect logins

One of the firms purchased by No-Internal-Controls, LLC allowed Remote Desktop connections from the Internet through the firewall to the internal network for remote employees

Due to high employee turnover and lack of documentation none all of the IT staff were aware of the legacy remote access

The main office has only a single firewall and no DMZ or bastion host exists to mediate incoming remote desktop connections

The internal network utilized a flat architecture

An attacker discovered the access by use of a port scan and used a dictionary attack to gain access to one of the training computers

The attacker ran a script on the compromised machine to elevate his access privileges and gain administrator access

The attacker installed tools on the compromised host to scan the network and identify network shares

The attacker copied ransomware into the network shares for the accounting department allowing it spread through the network and encrypt accounting files

Critical accounting files were backed up and were recovered, but some incidental department and personal files were lost

Instructions:

You have been hired by No-Internal-Controls, LLC in the newly created role of CISO and have been asked to place priority on mitigating further attacks of this type.

  • Suggest one or more policies that would help mitigate against attacks similar to this attack
  • Suggest one or more controls to support each policy
  • Identify each of the controls as physical, administrative, or technical and preventative, detective, or corrective.
  • Keep in mind that No-Internal-Controls, LLC is a mid-sized company with a small IT staff and limited budget
  • Do not attempt to write full policies, simply summarize each policy you suggest in one or two sentences.
  • Clearly indicate how each policy you suggest will help mitigate similar attacks and how each control will support the associated policy
  • 3-5 pages in length.
  • APA format.. citations, references etc…

Week 1 Journal Entry

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. One of the references must come from Sue, D. W., & Sue, D. (2016). Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings. I need this completed by 03/04/18 at 5pm.

Journal Assignment: Being Self-Aware of Cultural Competence

This week you were provided with a plethora of information about culture and what it means to be culturally competent. Using a Likert scale rating from 1 to 10, with 1 being extremely low and 10 being extremely high, indicate where you currently assess your levels of (a) cultural self-awareness, (b) knowledge, and (c) skills. You need to rate each of the 3 areas: a rating for self-awareness, a rating for knowledge and a rating for skills. Support each rating with a statement of why you selected the level you did.

Note: The Journal is a graded Assignment and should not contain information meant to be kept confidential. Responses should adhere to the same standards of quality as those expected for a Discussion or Application question.

These journals are personal reflections of your experiences. These are informally written, can be done in “first person”, can be just a few paragraphs, do not have to be supported with resources, but MUST help me to understand your experience doing the assignment as outlined, or indicate that you have generated some insights concerning the topic.  Please be candid, as this will allow my feedback to be both personally relevant and hopefully helpful.  However, please also remember that everything posted in Blackboard is public, so only share what you feel comfortable sharing. Please review the Grading Rubric for Application Assignments, Journals, and Final Papers attached.

Welcome to the class where we try to ease your fears about having a baby come into your home in a short time.  Babies grow quickly and develop through their interactions with the people around them and their environment (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  Babies are alert from birth.  They take cues from care giver’s faces and body language.   Babies and toddlers watch all the time.  Their wheels are always turning and soaking up what they see/learn.  Mothers who hold their babies all the time, co-sleep and feel that you cannot show too much attention on babies may be from more collectivist cultures where the family is essential in all aspects of life.
What is some common advice that you hear about babies or parenting?  Perhaps don’t spoil crying babies, babies should sleep on their stomach.  Some of this information is accurate and other is not.  These ideas are perpetuated by cultural beliefs (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  If a culture has an emphasis on independence and self-regulation, parents might be less willing to soothe a crying infant immediately.  One thing to keep in mind is that babies cannot communicate with you any other way than cry, so don’t get angry when they are just trying to express their need for food, diapers, or love.  As they grow into toddlers, you will notice that they always explore their surroundings.  You will notice that at times they cry for no reason and seek your attention.  Through this action, children are beginning to develop a secure attachment and  know that no matter where you go, I am here when you return (This is developing healthy attachment.)   Play is also a valuable way that children grow and develop.  Each parent’s view toys as serving different purposes (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  Some parents see toys as ways to distract kids but then some view play as a child’s job and an essential aspect of learning.  This view also varies by culture.  Cultural beliefs infuse parent-child interactions and learning (Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).

As discussed in this module, plural executive systems involve the separate elections of multiple positions in the executive branch.

If a plural executive system were instituted at the federal level, would this be an improvement over the existing singular executive system?  How might national-level politics work differently under such a system?

#2

As discussed in the module, state judges are usually either selected through appointment or popularly elected.  Which of these systems seems preferable to you, and why?

I believe that a plural executive system would not be an improvement to our current system. A plural executive may have its advantages such adding more accountability and seriousness to the positions, but overall I think it would cause chaos and stalemates in our system. Whenever a party takes over office and is able to appoint people with similar values and ideas it is much easier to get things done. Leaders are on the same page with their peers and this overall creates ease in operations. When a political party takes office I think it is counterproductive for them to have added struggle to pass laws and policies. We already have the checks and balances system, there is no need to create more barriers from getting things done. Another issue with elected positions is the fact that a huge portion of the population actually has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to politics. They are easily swayed by flashy campaigns and propaganda. Elected officials are not always the best choice. At least if they are being appointed it is more likely they have a proven track record. Further more I do not think having more elected positions would help current political climate. The way our elections have been going have really been a circus. There is a true lack in actual political debates that cover real issues. They have evolved into slanderous, televised reality shows.

I certainly am all for popularly elected in most cases; however, when it is in regards to electing judges, I prefer them to be appointed. I don’t like the idea of the public popularity aspect coming into play. I like the idea that judges would be somewhat free from the pressure of political pressure when making the decisions that they have to make. I think the stakes are too high for judges to be elected and run a part of a political party. I do understand that it is still somewhat politically connected based on who is in office and appoints them. You are never completely free of political pressure in political offices, but I do feel that judges being appointed helps this in some way. They should definitely be able to make decisions objectively and be in pursuit of justice without the typical ugliness that comes with political battling between parties. It seems that appointing judges takes out some of the negative outcomes that can stem from being concerned with contributions and approval from voters. The job of a judge is so important that it is one area that you just want a sound, rational, but most of all fair person making those decisions. Of course in politics nothing is 100% fair or black and white, but I do think that appointment judges has less negative complications than relying on popular vote.

I actually learned about the ecological model when I was in undergrad during an Adolescent Development class I took on a study abroad in Costa Rica. We had to write down examples of each system specifically relating to our personal life, and then volunteer to share our examples and why we put them there. It was a neat discussion.

What I like about the model provided for us in this week’s resources is that you can clearly see that the circles closest to the “self” are the ones the most influence. Because each systems causes the self to be less attached or focused on the other systems, they’re not balanced and become “rivals for dominance”, which makes sense, as this is true with systems in general (Caws, 516).

The most dominant systems include the microsystem and the exosystem. When I think of the dominance of the microsystem in my life and who that includes, I consider my family (parents, siblings, husband) and my peers (coworkers) and the heavy influence over them in my life, as well as the time I devote to them. The dominance that my microsystem plays on my life is noticeable, and does keep me from being as dominated by the other systems, like my exosystem.

For example, the expectation regarding my husband may include being home in the evening to cook him dinner, taking the time to grocery shop for him, going on dates or bringing him along to social gatherings, etc. could keep me from focusing on things that I include in my exosystem, such as focusing my time on schoolwork, visiting my neighbors as often, taking trips to visit long-distance friends, etc. This strain on the exosystem and other systems causes those systems to have less influence over my life, habits, decisions, etc.

Indian women that are mothers are primarily responsible for raising their daughters to the gender socialization culture in India. According to Hindu doctrine, women where created to provide company for the men, and to facilitate procreation, progeny and the continuation of the family lineage, (Char, 2014). Women are expected to remain home and take care of the family, while the husband goes out and finds work. Although their contribution to economic survival was vital, women’s social status remained secondary and supplemental to that of men. Women are often less educated and less wealthy because of the need to stay home and remain a caretaker (Buckley, 2015).

In Indian culture, women where considered to be subservient to their male counterparts. Either by religious dictation or cultural custom, the females in society were expected to be serve as child barriers in order to propagate the family lineage of her male companion. Women are supposed to be supervised by a male whether it be the husband, older son, or father, when going into the village. Women are also not allowed to learn how to drive because of the supervision rule (Buckley, 2015). In their culture this is supposed to be a luxury for women to not have to worry about the stress of driving. However, I feel this puts limitations on women being able to go where and when they want.

The sex ratio among the Indian children is primary masculine. There are reports that 100 million baby girls were missing from India. Also, there are about 41 million “missing women” died from maltreatment and resulted in a male-biased population. This bias is also seen as the children are growing up. The male child will receive attention and food where the female child will appear neglected. These girls present signs of malnourishment which is called stunting (Pillai & Ortiz-Rodriguez, 2015).

Psychological Disorders and Treatment

Describe a fictitious client (not a real person) who suffers from one of the mental illnesses you read about this week, and provide a brief description of the various symptoms your fictitious client displays. Your post should also:

    • Identify a diagnosis that could possibly fit this client. Provide a clear rationale for the diagnosis based on the symptoms presented.
    • Discuss treatment options for your fictitious client, using at least one biological, one psychological, and one social intervention (the biopsychosocial model).

Here is a sample response to get you started:

Joe is a middle-aged 45-year-old Caucasian male. He has been married for 20 years, and has been working at the same job for the past 10 years as an accountant. He is a busy working dad, the father of two children: a 5-year-old daughter (Josie) and a 10-year-old son (Carl). Joe coaches his son Carl’s baseball team, runs about 1-2 miles a day, and plays basketball once a week with his buddies at the local YMCA. Three months ago, Joe’s company had some layoffs, and his job was cut along with 5,000 others due to the economic downturn. Since that time, Joe has been extremely depressed and withdrawn, and he reports that he doesn’t enjoy activities that he used to like running or playing basketball. He turned over his coaching job to the assistant coach of the baseball team and states that he just doesn’t have the energy to do much of anything anymore. Some days, he feels so depressed he stays in bed for the entire day. He adds that he spends most of his time on the couch in his bathrobe watching TV and playing poker online.

These symptoms have persisted for the past three months—pretty much all day, every day. Joe’s wife has since returned to work full-time to help pay the bills, and Joe reports that this makes him feel like a failure. Joe’s children are worried and want to spend time with him, but Joe tends to push them away due to his feelings of sadness and shame for “letting them down.” Overall, Joe is in good health and does not have any other medical conditions or concerns.

As per the DSMIV-TR, it appears that Joe could be diagnosed with major depression due to his symptoms of anhedonia and feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and shame lasting for three months.

In terms of treatment, an antidepressant medication may be helpful to assist Joe in getting through this difficult time. A consultation with a psychiatrist would be in order here. This medication would be considered a biological intervention. Additionally, Joe would be recommended to participate in weekly sessions with a cognitive-behavioral therapist to help him overcome his cognitive (feelings of failure and shame) and behavioral (staying in bed, lying around on the couch, etc.) symptoms. This would be considered a psychological intervention. Finally, a focus on changing Joe’s daily routine would be recommended by encouraging the entire family to eat right and exercise. In addition, making sure that Joe gets to spend time with his friends and is given the support that he needs in getting motivated to begin looking for a new position would be important to add. Both of these latter recommendations would fit as a social intervention.

response question 1

Culture, is an interesting component to human development.  Not only do we learn why we do things but we begin to understand the influences behind it.  Culturally, there is a difference among the way humans interpret this influence.  How it is integrated in everyday life.

Cross-cultural examination is very important when evaluating differences in disorders, development and so on.  One example mentioned by Cole. M, (2013) is the example about a disorder of ASD and different cultures.  The example is that of Asperger’s syndrome, one of the key characteristics is to advert the eyes when talking.  In the Chinese culture this is seen as disrespect, however the child cannot comprehend any different.  Can not easily adjust the behavior.  Cole, goes on to explain that this was confusing back in the 1970’s and was debated between cross cultural examinations among psychologists (Cole. M, 2013).

The importance of cultural examination among a broad spectrum, is to understand where the world is headed.  To apply these theories and study and research for the betterment of human development as it progresses.  In the article by Cole. M, (2013), he mentioned things are similar or circling back to 1970 where there was so much confusion among the way culture was being interpreted.  We could say that is happening again.  Russell, S. T. (2015), argues that, “… if we value the role of human developmental research for promoting social change and justice, we will consider potential or real contribution to social justice as one of these dimensions upon which we judge the merit of research.” This is why it is necessary to value opinion based on research rather than emotion or personal bias.  As good as it sounds and as good intended as it may imply it doesn’t promote better development of the human race or the development of culture.

In our world today, there are repeated characteristics of which we have already been through, and some new ones.  Things seen from movies or predicted in dystopian futures or books.  George Orwell’s 1984, or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.  If we continue to ignore proper research and don’t carefully examine different cultures, than mental illness and other disorders will plenty of land of which to roam.  What it looks like now is children not being able to read hands on a clock, or having mobile phones at the age of 3 or 9, not knowing cursive.  Changing math as some have experienced this “new” method which doesn’t work.  The importance lies in the statement, “… if we value the role of human developmental research for promoting social change and justice, we will consider potential or real contribution to social justice as one of these dimensions upon which we judge the merit of research.” (Russell, S. T., 2015).

A proposed amendment to the Georgia State Constitution will eliminate the current county-based property tax system and replace it with a statewide property tax system.

Would you support / vote for this amendment?  What factors are important for you in considering this issue?

#2

Here’s another hypothetical scenario:

Governor Kersey has appointed you to lead a state commission for economic development in Georgia.  You must develop a strategy for improving the state’s economy.  What will you suggest?  What are your long-term goals for the state?

No, I wouldn’t vote for this amendment to be put in place. I believe the county-based property tax system is put in place for a reason and is working for us already, so why try to fix it? County’s set the rate of taxes and receive the revenue from that, therefore can use it for leverage and benefit greatly. A area that has a higher tax rate is mostly likely generating lots of revenue and putting it towards making the community even better, such as improving schools, libraries, and parks. This creates a prestigious and safe community that people aspire to be like. If this were to be a statewide property tax, all counties would be the same and it would not matter what part of town you move to. Also, counties differ greatly based on their resources. A county in Atlanta does not compare and cannot have the same amount of tax rate as a county in south Georgia. This is because of the large amount of jobs, people, and resources that Atlanta has. Atlanta also has a very scarce amount of land, therefore property tax rates should be higher because of scarcity whereas south Georgia has a great amount of land and less amount of people.

I would not vote for this legislation.  I like the idea of my tax dollars going to my local officials and public utilities.   The money can immediately be used to hire police and fire rescue.  It can help pay teachers a better wage and it can help build and secure the roads we drive on everyday.  Every year the state takes my tax dollars to support whatever state programs that they feel are necessary.  In this case, I would much rather the county that I live in, receive the funds from my property taxes.  Another issue that I have with this legislation is the fact that not every county pays the same amount in taxes.  In other counties, the property tax rate may very from higher to lower and if we are all paying different amounts, I want the money that I am paying to go to the things that benefit me and my community.

Electoral rules within presidential primary elections are dictated by state laws. For instance, states decide whether to hold a primary election or a caucus, states decide the date of this event, and states decide who can vote/caucus in each race (e.g., closed primaries, top-two primaries, etc). Below are some illustrative resources.

http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/primary-types.aspx
https://www.uspresidentialelectionnews.com/2016-presidential-primary-schedule-calendar/
https://frontloading.blogspot.com/p/2016-republican-delegate-allocation-by.html

To what extent do state laws shape primary outcomes? Are some states more influential in determining party nominees because of their electoral laws? Provide examples to support your position. Consider the role of the national party (including the nomination process and allocation of superdelegates) as well as the demographics of typical primary voters (Chapter 10).

*Note: Reaction posts should be approximately 2 paragraphs in length. Responses to other students do not have a length requirement but serve as your participation grade (i.e., the more thorough the better).

believe that state laws shape the primaries in certain ways. I believe that states such as Florida and Nevada and others that have a closed primary system help to create a strong party basis by preventing cross over voting, but they also exclude the ‘leaners’ that identify as independent which could sway the vote overall.  Furthermore, I believe that the states such as Georgia and Wisconsin, which have open primaries, give voters the most freedom and flexibility but can cause issues on who the true nominee should be from those states. Open primaries can lead to many people voting across party lines and have them choosing the least desirable candidate and the easiest to beat in the general election. This would essentially take the freedom away from the other party voters who are playing by the book.

I feel that there are states that are influential in determining nominees based on their primary type, as discussed previously, and on when they choose to hold their primary. It has been shown that the states that hold there primaries early will typically begin to shape the field of candidates and often some candidates drop out of the race before a majority of states even get the chance to go to the polls and have a say. This was shown in the “Our Broken Presidential Nominating System” article when it discussed how the 2000, 2004 and 2012 nominations were already being virtually decided before an overwhelming majority of the voters had the chance to vote. This leads to the later states having little say in the nominee that is chosen.

In regard to the delegates being awarded, I believe that the proportional allocation process is the best. This provides viable chances for all nominees to make it to the national party. By allocating the delegate proportionally you keep the candidates in the race longer because they still have a fighting chance. If John Smith comes in third in Georgia but comes in first in California, then he still may win over the person that comes in second in both states. It is a fair and more competitive solution to a winner take all type of system. This also would afford the most favorable nominee overall.
