history essay

This assignment is a “think piece,” which is an essay that requires you to interact with a subject and develop your own interpretation based on that experience.  After your initial analysis of a specific topic, you should synthesize that with other outside research to support your ideas.  You should use a minimum of two other scholarly, peer-reviewed resources found in the APUS library.

Specifically for this assignment we will use an interactive map of westward expansion from 1860 to 1890. You can access it at this URL:http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/asset/akh10_int_expansion/ (The interactive map will often not work with Google Chrome). Once you have the map open, click on the boxes for Major Cities, Railroad Networks, Improved Agricultural Land, and States and Territories.  At the bottom of the map, you will notice the decades 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1890.  Click on each of these decades in succession and you will see the ways in which the country changed. The goal of this assignment is for you to interpret, synthesize, and analyze what you are seeing on the map. You will make a well-organized argument, support that through research, and then write a conclusion for your findings.

Analysis is the process whereby the researcher separates something into its component parts.  In an analytical essay, the writer examines a subject relative to its own terms, and explains the problem by studying the individual parts.  In contrast, synthesis requires that the researcher examine individual unrelated parts in an effort to discover something new.  A good essay will utilize both analysis and synthesis.  Instead of examining the simple facts of a problem, the writer will go beyond the obvious, making connections between different pieces of evidence to discover something new.

As an example, consider a modern map of the world illustrating the growth of the internet over the last thirty years. It demonstrates the new ways in which the world is connected by facilitating the spread of ideas through instantaneous communication. Access to much of the information that once required us to physically travel to a library is now accessible through a computer at home (or a mobile phone in your pocket). Social media has also given us the ability to discuss and debate ideas, not only with our friends and family, but with people we may have never met.  We all have the power to disseminate knowledge around the globe within a matter of seconds.

If you were writing a paper on this topic (this is an example only, as your paper will focus on the period from 1860 to 1890) you could analyze this larger topic by focusing on a specific aspect like use of the internet in online education. You might make the argument that the internet has enabled more non-traditional students to pursue a higher education. Your synthesis would include understanding the connections between your outside research and your argument.

This essay should be at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of two academically credible sources. Bibliographies and citations can be in MLA format.

The short paper must include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor’s name, and date. You must also include a bibliography at the end of your paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, informal language, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Before submitting your paper, check your grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper.

REPLY TO CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION

The textbook distinguishes the differences between evaluation and research. Discuss how each of these concepts fits into health promotion intervention strategies.

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS? (A MININUM OF 150 WORDS)

                                                        CLASSMATE’S POST

While research on health promotion interventions has had a long history, the systematic search for evidence of effective health promotion probably began with the publication of two significant sets of reviews of effectiveness on a wide range of topics (DiClemente, Salazar, Crosby; 2013).

Principles for the evaluation of health promotion initiatives

§ Participation – at each stage of evaluation those with an interest should be involved. These can include policy-makers, community members and organizations, health and other professionals, etc.

§ Multiple methods – evaluations should draw on a variety of disciplines and employ a broad range of information gathering procedures

§ Capacity building – evaluations should enhance the capacity of individuals, communities, organizations etc.

§ Appropriateness – evaluations should be designed to accommodate the complex nature of health promotion interventions and their long-term impact

Conclusions and recommendations for the evaluation of health promotion initiatives

1) Those who have a direct interest in a health promotion initiative should have the opportunity to participate in all stages of its planning and evaluation

2) Adequate resources should be devoted to the evaluation of health promotion initiatives (at least 10%).

3) Health promotion initiatives should be evaluated in terms of their processes as well as their outcomes.

4) The use of randomized controlled trials to evaluate health promotion initiatives is, in most cases, inappropriate, misleading and unnecessarily expensive.

5) Expertise in the evaluation of health promotion initiatives needs to be developed and sustained

Fantasy Presidential Campaign Activity

!!!I NEED THIS TODAY 100% PLAGIARISM FREE!!!

In this activity you are going to apply what you have learned this week about policy as well as apply what you have learned in this course so far to create a basic presidential campaign plan.

Imagine that you have been serving the past few years as the governor of your home state or a U.S. Senator representing your home state. You have done great work and face no challenge in winning the nomination of your party to run in the General Election. In your campaign plan, please address the following:

Part 1: Campaign Details

  1. What is your home state?
  2. What is your political party?
  3. What is your campaign tagline or slogan? Almost all recent presidential campaigns have had a theme song. For example, in 1992, Bill Clinton used the song,” Don’t Stop,” by Fleetwood Mac. In 2012, Republican nominee Mitt Romney used the song, “Born Free,” by Kid Rock. What is your campaign theme song? Why did you select that song.
  4. Select someone to be your Vice Presidential Running Mate. You can pick anyone that would eligible, per the Constitution, to serve as President. Why did you select this person to be your vice presidential running mate? How do they help improve your chances on winning the General Election?

Part 2: Your Issues

  1. Select and describe two (2) domestic policy issues your campaign is advocating.
  2. Why did you select these domestic policy issues to focus on? Use polling data from a reputable polling source such as pew research to support your decision.
  3. For each domestic policy issue write a simple one sentence “elevator pitch” that you would use to easily communicate your position to the masses.
  4. Select and describe two (2) economic policy issues your campaign is advocating.
  5. Why did you select these economic policy issues to focus on? Use polling data from a reputable polling source such as pew research to support your decision.
  6. For each economic policy issue write a simple one sentence “elevator pitch” that you would use to easily communicate your position to the masses.
  7. Select and describe two (2) foreign policy issues your campaign is advocating.
  8. Why did you select these foreign issues to focus on? Use polling data from a reputable polling source such as pew research to support your decision.
  9. For each foreign policy issue write a simple one sentence “elevator pitch” that you would use to easily communicate your position to the masses.
  10. Part 3: Your Strategy

Considering the electoral college vote, which specific states would you campaign in. Keep in mind you have limited resources and that you can’t campaign in every state. Think about what states you would need to win in order to win the general election. Based on historical data, do you actually have a chance to win. Would you be able secure enough electoral votes to win the general election by these states.

To help you think about this part of the assignment you may want to find online and play with an “Interactive Electoral College Map.” Here are some website that you could use to help:

NEED IN 12 HOURS REPLY TO CLASSMATE’S POST

1. Managing a project without governance could be challenging. Share with the class some of your governance experiences and how helpful those experiences were to your project as a team member.

2.  As a project manager would you prefer to work in the Program Management Office (PMO) environment? Why, or why not?

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS? (A MININUM OF 200 WORDS)

Prior to reflection I had a general assumption that I worked on many projects in my short time as a finance professional. However, I simply observed peers/coworkers who were really involved with the projects. My professional experience was a level once removed from working hands on with projects or their financial allocations. It was my teams’ responsibility to provide planning and target guidelines to the finance teams and to consolidate the budgets of those teams who worked directly with the project managers. I.e., the finance teams worked with the core and investment initiatives directly while the central financial planning and analysis team provided (1) governance for how to plan and (2) consolidation of those individual budgets and analytics presented to the finance leadership team, the CFO and CIO.

I have gathered that working on projects requires very strong organizational skills and the ability to conceptualize the impact the project will have on an organization. From what I understand of PMO coming from a consolidation role, I don’t think I would prefer to work in the Program Management Office Environment. Being well thought out about projects, I believe it is possible to succeed in projects and align them to organizational goals without the rigid structure that restricts creativity and diminishes the power of ambiguity and individual project success. Working in PMO would decrease project flexibility. I think I enjoy the individuality and ambiguity associated with individual projects. In reality, every individual project is a result of or will result in another individual or program of projects. I like the individual nature because there seems to be more structure and closure even though there can likely be more ambiguity.

I would, however like to experience working in the PMO environment to gain a better understanding of the scope of projects and portfolio management as it aligns with organizational objectives. I think changing roles and experiencing different areas of an organization is essential for those that are curios about the entire operational structure of the organizations livelihood. This transition between roles provides context and a stronger ability to make decisions based on experience and confidence of those experiences.

“A” WORK DISCUSSION

How do we decide what parts of an emergency reaction plan should be made public vs. kept a secret to avoid giving too much information to terrorist groups?

REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 200 WORDS or MORE)

                                                    CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE

When determining to share an emergency plan with the public we must provide generic information with very limited details. With the previous terrorists’ attacks that have been done, we must study their plans of attack to have knowledge of the avenues they would be looking for to make a successful attack on our cities. For example, the following information would be kept secret:

a) Response Process – this information would allow terrorist to know exactly who would be responding to the scene and their duties (Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, 2014).

b) Concept of Operations – this information would allow terrorist to know what that personnel are being deployed, our threat classification, and the process in which we respond (Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, 2014).

c) Roles and Responsibilities – terrorist would have knowledge of local, state and regional roles and responsibilities (Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, 2014).

d) Training and Exercise – terrorist would have knowledge of our training program development, implementation, and exercise the schedule would be (Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, 2014).

If any of this information was available to terrorist, it would make it easier for them to attack law enforcement, medical response personnel, assisting agencies, and all of the personnel that would be in place to attempt to destroy their plan of attack. Any information that would assist them in committing a terrorist act should be kept a secret. Information to water supply, safety facilities, and exit routes should be announced only at the time of an event. Citizens that we believe to be normal often times work for or support terrorist groups and can’t be trusted. However, any information that is made public is also accessible by the terrorist organizations that will, in turn, modify their plans to counter the strategies designed to minimize chaos and destruction. This creates a dilemma regarding how much information related to emergency planning for a terrorist attack should be made public versus what should be maintained on a “need to know” the basis to avoid giving the enemy the opportunity to adjust their plans accordingly (Spindlove & Simenson, 2013).

Party Platform Creation Activity

This week we learned about the important functions of political parties. You also had the opportunity to browse the Democratic and Republican Party platforms for your reading. In this activity, pretend you are in charge of inventing your own original political party and write a platform for your brand new political party.

Part 1 – Your Platform

  1. Name your party.
  2. Identify and describe one domestic policy that your party would believe in. Give a paragraph description of that domestic policy. Be very detailed and specific in your description. (Domestic policy is anything that impacts how we live our lives within the borders of our nation.)
  3. Identify and describe one specific economic policy that your party would believe in. Give a paragraph description of that economic policy. Be very detailed and specific in your description. (Economic policy is all those policies that impact the distribution and exchange of property, wealth, and capital. Think about things that impact money and how much you have and how you can make more.)
  4. Identify and describe one specific foreign policy that your party would believe in. Give a paragraph description of that foreign policy. Be very detailed and specific in your description. (Foreign policy is how this nation interacts with other nations.)

Part 2 – Reflection Essay

Write an essay in which you compare and contrast each of your three policies, one at a time, to similar policies from the platforms of the Democratic and Republican parties. How are your policies similar to the policies of the two major parties? How your policies different from the policies of the two major parties? Be specific and include specific examples. Conclude your comparison and contrast essay by discussing which of the two major parties your political party most similar to?

Don’t forget to include a reference list.

Starbuck Case

 Starbucks Case Study

Read the three articles noted below about an actual union-organizing effort involving Starbucks in New York City: Use the link for the case.

After reading all the articles and considering additional research, address the following questions (feel free to use supplemental authoritative resources in your response):

  • Do you think the administrative law judge and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) went too far in overruling Starbucks? Why or why not?
  • How much leeway should an employer have in setting standards for conduct, customer interaction, and attire in the workplace?
  • Does the NLRB decision unfairly limit Starbucks in the management of the stores? Why or why not?
  • What is your view of the court’s decision?

Ensure to provide references.

The Gospel of Matthew

In The Gospel of Matthew, we have an unusually clear picture of how a gospel writer shapes his portrayal of Jesus’ life and teachings according to the writer’s particular beliefs, audience, and purpose. There are several very important examples of how Matthew is doing this in the “Introduction to The Gospel of Matthew” in your textbook. (Please read this Introduction carefully!)   Matthew is trying to make the case that Jesus represents the true and authentic line of Moses, the prophets, and Israel as a whole – over and against the other Jewish sects/groups of the time (Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, etc.).  This is why Matthew repeatedly inserts sections of scripture from the Hebrew Bible (called “Old Testament” by Christians) – to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of those ancient scriptures (even if Matthew sometimes makes a complete mess of things in the process.  For example:  Read Matthew 21:6-7 to see that Matthew has Jesus riding on both a colt and a donkey at the same time in his slightly misbegotten attempt to have Jesus fulfilling a passage found in Zechariah.)

In our Discussion Forum for Matthew, we are going to consider the Sermon on the Mount. This Sermon is one of the most beloved and well-known messages of Jesus. Our textbook says, “The famous Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5 – 7) sets forth a Christian interpretation of the Jewish Law.” But really, this statement is not quite accurate because Jesus was a Jew who was often speaking to largely Jewish audiences – and there WAS no Christianity and that time. Therefore, Jesus’ re-interpretation of Jewish Law was Jesus’ own interpretation – not a Christian interpretation (see 5:21 – 48 for examples).  And it is worth noting that sometimes Jesus’ teachings are not the same as Christian Church teachings. For example: Many churches take a very hard stand against homosexuality as being against Christian principles. However, Jesus never spoke about or against homosexuality, but he did speak constantly of love and compassion for ALL people – most especially marginalized people.

Jesus paid no attention to social or religious boundaries, he violated Jewish purity laws, and he demonstrated over and over that the compassionate spirit of God’s law is far more important than the letter of religious laws (especially given that religious laws are sometimes cruel and exclusionary).  Clearly, Jesus was opposed to hypocrites of every size, shape, and color and he called his followers to live according to higher standards.

Writing Prompts:

Please read Chapters 5 – 7 very carefully, and then do the following:

  1. Write a summary (including chapter and verse) of how Jesus says we should live and how we should not live.  What things are necessary and what things are not necessary?
  2. What are some of Jesus’ main points (including chapter and verse) about religious hypocrisy?
