World Religion 2-1

NOTE:  Discussion Board writing should be done with the same craft and care as a Reflection Paper: check for spelling and grammatical clarity. Use multiple paragraphs to structure your thinking. Use specific details and examples from text and traditions to support general statements.

Choose only 1 of the following two discussion assignments:

Q1: Both Hinduism and Buddhism involve an element of Liberation.  Discuss the differences between Hinduism and Buddhism in terms of 1) what it is that the individual is being liberated from, and 2) how that liberation is achieved.  Use your best writing and be sure to respond to another students post.  You should have a minimum of 200 words (your own words, not including quotes text or titles) for your initial post and a minimum of 100 words for your response to another student.

Q2: A Breathing Practice for Stress Reduction and Clarity

Practice the following instructions for Buddhist mindfulness relaxation. This is NOT a religion or a form of worship, but a practical stress reduction technique used by many stress counselors and psychologists, but it is an example of how practices from another culture can be part of our own. Practice this at least twice for ten minutes before writing about it. Do not write about the instructions without practicing them! In your journal:

*Please describe effects both in body and mind.

* Please note the relationship between mind a breath.

* End by explaining how this practice could or could not be helpful as a regular stress-reduction practice.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Find a comfortable sitting position. Do not lie down, but you may sit relaxed in any position as long as your spine is upright.

2. Do not resist noises. if external noises come up. Let them be.

3. If thoughts come and go, do not try to control them or push them out. Do not attempt to ‘make the mind a blank.’ Just let them pass as they come, without clinging to them or resisting them.

4. Without strain, gently observe your breath. Let the mind keep returning the breath in the present moment every time it wanders off into the past or the future.

5. Follow the breath as it rises and falls. Breathing in, let your attention flow from your belly to a point between your eyebrows. Breathing out, let it flow back down to the belly. Let the breath become slower, gentler, finer.

6. Allow the muscles of the chest, the solar plexus, and the belly to relax with each exhalation.

7.If physical sensations arise, whether in the forehead, the chest, or anywhere, simply feel them. Welcome and absorb them into your breath. Do not resist sensations or try not to feel them.

8. Letting thoughts go, sink into silence. Feel the power of that inner silence.

Ending the Session: Don’t mind the time or watch the clock. When you feel that about 10 minutes have passed, deepen your breath, feel the whole body at rest, and bring your attention to your chest, your face, your eyes. Then slowly open the eyes.

Reflect: As the textbook author asserts, the Framers intentionally designed a process for selecting presidents that would minimize the president’s political power – the Electoral College. They hoped this institution would insulate the chief executive from the public because they feared the power of presidents who might be elected by the people. However, the Electoral College has also spawned a long ongoing debate about whether the Electoral College should be abandoned in favor of new methods, which would ensure that the candidate elected has the most popular votes. The controversy over the Electoral College must be understood in order to better understand how and why U.S. presidents are elected. After you have read and studied the Electoral College process, you will critically think about the process and share your insights as you write your discussion.

library extra credit

  • Library Extra CreditFor a bit of extra credit, you can take some online classes offered by the library. Five points per class. Once you’ve taken the class you can take a screen shot of the certificate or badge and upload it at the link below (just click where it says “Library EC”). You need to pass the quiz to get credit. You can click on the link as many times as you need to, if you complete different classes at different times.
Here’s a link to the MLA class. Five points for completing the class and passing the quiz.
Here’s a link to the Research classes. There are three of these (Research 1, 2 & 3), and you will get 5 points for each one that you successfully complete.
That adds up to 20 points of extra credit possible from library classes.
If you’ve taken these classes before, that’s great, but you have to take it during this semester to get credit in this class. Having taken it before will make it easier, because you’ll probably already know all the answers. But it’s never bad to get a reminder of important information.
** Please be aware that there is a deadline to register to take the Research classes and it sometimes takes a few days to get this done. Plus, the library regularly shuts these classes down before the end of the semester. If you wait too late to get started you will not be able to attempt this extra credit. If you don’t get registered, or if you don’t complete the classes before they “go dark” I will NOT be able to help you! Don’t wait, if you want to do these classes! **
    Final deadline: May 9, 11:59 p.m.

  • AssignmentLibrary ECTurn it in here. You can use this link as many times as you need to, if you complete the assignments at different times. Just attach a screen shot of the certificate or badge showing you completed the assignment.

If you don’t know how to take a screen shot there are many, many YouTube videos showing how. Here’s one at random: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoTpIYLBtKs&t=3s (It would be great if you would resize screenshots so they are not HUGE files before attaching them here.)

Persuasive Essay Final Draft

This assignment calls for you to revise your Persuasive Essay from week six into a final draft.  All good writers revise their work, often multiple times. Revising isn’t just looking for grammatical errors; editing alone is not revision (though we do want you to edit too). Revision literally means to “see again.” In the revision process, you improve your analytical skills, sometimes challenging your own ideas which can serve to deepen your argument.

Review the feedback your instructor provided on your rough draft as well as the information from the peer review in week seven.  As you begin revising your paper, be sure to consider the following:

·  Did I fulfill the assignment criteria?

·  Did I say what I intended to say?

·  Do I have a two-sided topic?

·  Is my thesis persuasive in nature?

·  Do all my paragraphs serve to support my thesis?

·  Is my argument convincing, my support logical, my evidence sufficient?

·  Does my conclusion sum up the essay?

Criteria

The final draft of your essay should contain the same basic features as the rough draft:

·  A well-defined issue that is controversial by nature

·  A clear thesis statement that demonstrates the position you will be taking throughout the essay

·  A counter argument with at least one credible source defending the opposing viewpoint

·  A refutation to or compromise with the counter argument

·  From 500 to 700 words in length, typed in Times New Roman, 12pt. font, double-spaced, with one inch margins

·  Written primarily in third person

·  Edited for spelling, mechanical, grammatical, and typing errors

The most important criteria for your final draft is that it is revised version of the rough draft!

Analysis 6.1

Effective Post-Project Reviews

1

Read the following scenario:

A large project that was running within the organization for the past four years needs to be closed. Toward

the middle of the project, the project team felt that the project was gaining steam in the execution phase

and was progressing flawlessly. The project sponsor who was initially leading the project left for a job in

another organization. A new sponsor stepped in and did not feel that the project was of any value. He

claimed that the organization was headed in another direction. He constantly criticized the project team and

made them feel like the project they had been working on for the past few years was not of any importance

anymore to him or the organization. He had not really taken a review of the project. He just made a

reactionary decision to cancel the project. He felt that the project did not fit into the direction of the

organization and would rather hurt than help the current environment. The project was canceled, the team

was released to their normal jobs, and the project manager was fired because the sponsor’s view of not

getting the job done correctly. The sponsor’s boss wants to understand why the project was canceled

through a post-project review.

Based on the given scenario, apply the four principles of post-project review and explain how the project

would have been evaluated. Remember the four principles of post-project review are objectivity, internal

consistency, replicability, and fairness.

Submission Requirements:

Submit your responses in a Microsoft Word document of the following specifications:

  Font: Arial, Size: 12 point

  Length: 1–2 pages

  Line Spacing: Double

Evaluation Criteria:

The Analysis rubric will be used to evaluate this assessment. In addition to the rubric, you will be evaluated

on the following points:

  Did you cover the four principles of a post-project review?

  Did you use the four principles to note where the project may have been wrongly canceled?

Bind the Learning

Bind the Learning

Critically reflect on your personal educational goals and describe three substantial reasons why reaching your goals is important to you.  Explain how your emotions either help or hinder you in reaching your educational goals.

Little info below about me, that will help with the work about.

You already know I’m from Chicago. I also know you heard a lot of bad things that happening in Chicago. My dream was to move my kids from that city, because I felt I don’t belong there. I felt my family need more from me and I wanted more for them. I’m no longer childcare provider and I don’t work as a part time teacher at my son school anymore. I have my AA in Early Childhood Education, wanted to farther my education. I wanted to join military, but I spinal surgery July 1 2014, two years ago and I’m always in pain. My pain keeps me in and out the hospital. I don’t have a social life as much and pain management isn’t working for me. I can’t keep a job because of my pain and I feel it putting my life and goals on stand still. I Attended Crane High School and now I’m in Ashford (Education Studies). Teachers in Crane didn’t care about the students or the education.  When I finish high and college in 2007 and 2015 (I was the first out of my grandmother children, my grandmother grandchildren, and mother kids to finish high school and college.) I’m going to keep farther my education. As you learn more about how development occurs, how personality forms, and how factors like society and culture impact behavior, you might find yourself gaining a deeper understanding of the many influences that have impacted your own life. This skill sort of stems from learning about research methods. When you acquire critical thinking skills, you really do doubt all sources of information you acquire. You fully understand the different steps of conducting studies, the problems that can occur at any step, and how each method are problematic in their own ways. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela. “Education is the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process.” It also prepares one for the ability of reasoning and judging, readying one to face the “world”. It’s the foundation of developing one’s mind and intellectual capability, without it, it is difficult to advance in life not only at a personal level, but also on a more global scale. I want to be a grammar school/middle school teacher. I want to take what I learn and pass it on to them. As a childcare provider I learn how to work with other kids that not mine. I learn to build a bond with that parents as well. I learn to take my time with my childcare kids. I feel that we can learn a lot from children. Yes, I had my ups and downs with kids, but I learn to stay calm at all time, because kids feed of your vibe as well. I know time-out don’t work for all kids. I don’t bribe a kid to behave. I feel I learn a lot from my past teachers, the reason because I learn to never give up on a student, I learn to keep an open-mind, I learn to control myself because you never know what a person is going through. I learn to build trust as well; I learn so much from past teachers.
