writer’s notebook 5.1

For this Writer’s Notebook assignment, you will be practicing paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting. First, you should choose an article that you will be using as a source for your Argument essay. Then, you should find three different pieces of evidence that you might use in your essay as support material. Need 300 words.

Complete the Writer’s Notebook in 4 steps as explained below:

1. Create a “quotation sandwich” out of one of the pieces of evidence.

2. Paraphrase a different piece of evidence. Include both the original and your paraphrase for comparison.

3. Summarize another piece of evidence. Again, include the original and your summary.

4. Include an in-text citation for each! At the end, be sure to include a Works Cited entry for each source.

Integrating Sources

Why integrate sources? In academic writing, you will often present claims based on your own research and analysis. In order to prove or advance these claims, you may need to use evidence from sources. Evidence are those things outside of our own mind (facts, figures, reports, books, etc.) that support the reasons we present to make our claim. Integrating information from sources helps you to:

  • Strengthen your own argument / claim / position,
  • Identify others’ ideas, and
  • Establish your ethos / credibility.

When selecting information to use as evidence, it is important to:

  • Utilize the latest, most significant and credible sources that engage with the topic at hand.
  • Use sources to show your readers where you fit in with other writers in the larger conversation about your topic.
  • Use sources that show your readers you are up to date and knowledgeable about your topic.

Ways to Integrate Sources

It is important to know how to effectively integrate sources into your own writing. Generally speaking, there are three ways to integrate sources into your writing.

IntegrateSources

Whenever you integrate sourced information it is important to frame it, which means, you should introduce the information in your own words, insert the sourced information, and follow it with your own interpretation or analysis. A common approach is regularly referred to as the “sandwich approach.”

sandwich

Making Connections

Be sure that your reader understands why you have integrated the sourced information.  To help the reader follow your logic, you should make connections.

  • Point the reader back to the thesis
  • Point the reader back to the paragraph’s main point
  • Point the reader back to your purpose

Revising and Editing Your Text

When you are revising/editing your paper, answer the following questions to ensure that you have effectively integrated your sourced information.

  • Did you use a direct quote?  If so, did you place it within quotation marks?
  • Did you place your parenthetical/in-text citation immediately after your sourced information?
  • Does your citation include all of the required elements?
  • Does the ending punctuation follow the parenthetical/in-text citation?

Citing Integrated Sources

Whenever you integrate sources, you must document the source. Doing so helps to establish credibility and avoid plagiarism.

Generally, parenthetical/in-text citations require the following components:

  • Author’s last name and
  • page number.

Example: (Green 210)

Just as with most things, there are exceptions.

  • Signal Phrase – A signal phrase is an introductory clause that introduces information from sources.  It alerts the reader that you are shifting from your own point of view to someone else’s. When the author’s name is included in the signal phrase, you only need to include the page number in the parenthetical/in-text citation.

Example: According to Charles Green, “televisions are going to have a significant impact on the way people experience the world” (210).

  • Second consecutive use of same source – When using the same source consecutively, you only need to include the page number in the parenthetical/in-text citation.

In Summary

There are three main ways to integrate sources into your paper:

  • Direct quote
  • Summary
  • Paraphrase

Remember:

  • All three methods require citations
  • When integrating sources, it is important to “frame” the information
  • Sourced information should be used as evidence, not to replace your own thoughts or ideas

Week 10 Assignment: Investing in My Future (170 points)

Finance is exciting! In this course, we learned how money can grow through the use of compounding and interest rates and your growth strategies may now be different. What are your new financial goals? Would you like to become more liquid, to save more for your retirement, or to start a new business? Whatever your goals, finance is right at the core. Think about what you learned in this course regarding investing to complete this assignment.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

    1. Describe (3) ways you will invest in your future based on the principles of finance discussed in this course. Include terminology from the course and use citations as necessary to support your explanation of the terminology.
    2. Discuss one of the (3) ways you feel most confident as a way to invest in your future. Explain your level of confidence.
    3. Of the (3) ways you will invest in your future, discuss the one you perceive might be the most challenging. Then, discuss how you might overcome some of those challenges.
    4. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
      1. This course requires use of new Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
      2. Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
      3. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

ENGLISH DISCUSSION PAPER

  1. First, go to the “What Color is Your Parachute?” website and read “The Seven Rules to Keep in Mind about Taking Career Tests” toward the bottom of the web page. Keep these in mind when doing the assessments for this section and others we’ll do as part of the class.
  2. To get a Holland-like Code, use the O*NET Interest Profiler (preferred site) or go to “RCC Holland Code” and take the online test. Record your three letter interest codes.
  3. These sites use the Holland Code profile to help you explore related education and career options. Once you have your code, you can explore occupations at O*NET or try going to Career Zone and selecting “Assess Yourself.” Enter your letter code in steps on the hexagon. If you click on one of the occupations listed, information about that career is shown. If you use the University of Indiana site, you will be able to link to college majors that are often preferred by individuals with similar interests. (Also, the Self-Directed Search site has a section you can access without paying anything, but to use the whole site, you need to pay $9.95, which we do not expect you to do.)

Required for Participation Points

Each of you needs to submit a post to this Threaded Discussion in the Discussion Board on the following (Please include your code in the title of your post.):

  • Summarize your own Holland Code Profile. Which set of letters seems to best describe your interest areas? What does this mean to you? How well do you feel these summary codes describe you?
  • How does your Holland Code link with your academic major and possible career direction? Remember that within each major and career, typically there are a range of interests represented.
  • Help others interpret their codes. What do you share in terms of similarities and differences with other students based on their interest areas? I am really looking forward to seeing what you all come up with

  1. Refusing an Adjustment:  Letter from Duncan’s Exotic Pets refusing a damage claim

As a well-known exotic animal dealer in the Cincinnati area, your boss, Roger Duncan, has dealt with his share of customers experiencing buyer’s regret.  Despite his warning, many of them still buy their exotic pets for the wrong reasons.  When Melissa Carpenter bought Binky, the red-tailed guenon monkey, she begged Mr. Duncan to reduce his price to $10,000 because she had “fallen in love with Binky’s soulful eyes and adorable button nose.”  Now she wants to return poor Binky, and you have never seen your boss so angry.

“Listen to this!” fumes Mr. Duncan as he reads Carpenter’s letter

While I was at work, I locked Binky in his own room—which I equipped with his own color TV (with cable) and which I spent days wallpapering with animal pictures.  Then last night Binky somehow unlocked the door, ripped out my telephone, opened the refrigerator, smashed eggs all over my kitchen and my new Persian carpet, broke 14 of the china dishes my mother gave me when I got married, and squeezed toothpaste all over my Louis XIV settee I inherited from my grandmother!

“Not only does she demand that I take poor Binky back after she’s abused him through her ignorance and neglect,” snapped Mr. Duncan, “but she wants me to pay $150,000 in damages for her car, her apartment, and her state of mind.”  Your boss is so upset that you decide to write Ms. Carpenter yourself.

    Your Task—

Write an adjustment refusal to Ms. Carpenter and include a copy of her contract.  It clearly states Roger Duncan’s policy:  refunds only if animals are returned in good health, and absolutely no warranty against damages.  Each pet comes with specific care instructions, including warnings about certain idiosyncrasies that could cause problems in the wrong environment.

Despite the fact that Binky is probably traumatized by his experiences, Mr. Duncan has generously agreed to accept his return, refunding Ms. Carpenter’s $10,000.  However, he will not accept liability for any loss of property or for any claims of mental duress on the part of Ms. Carpenter.  Write the letter in an appropriate style.

    Return Address—

Writing 2 Assignment (100 pts)

Audience for this assignment: Generally educated readers familiar with Bragg’s story we’ve read.

Task: Write a developed paragraph in response to the following “Questions.” Please read the questions very carefully. It is impossible to write an effective paragraph unless you have a full understanding of what you are asked to focus on.

Questions

How do you respond to the phrase, “getting above your raising”? Is it a good thing, something to aim for, or is it something to be afraid of or ashamed of? Explain your response; support your response by logical reasoning, by using what you read and learned in Rick Bragg’s writing,and/ or by relating an experience you had or you witnessed.

(1. Please do not retell the story. Retelling or summarizing the story will lead to no credit for this assignment. 2. Please do not turn this assignment to a personal story of yours; doing so will not gain a passing grade. 3. Do not put a title – it is not an essay.)

Paragraph Topic Sentence and outline due*: JULY 8TH. (See bottom of the page for more details.)

Final draft for a grade due:JULY 9TH

____________________________________________________________________________________

Expectations / Requirements

· It is a fully developed paragraph. The minimum length requirement is about 150 words.

· It should demonstrate your understanding of the social class issues we discussed; it should show application of what have studied about paragraph writing conventions (paragraph topic sentence, paragraph development, and coherence…). There is no need to summarize the whole story—see “Audience” above; relevant details in the story may be used to support your own point of view.

· It should be relatively free of surface errors, particularly comma splice, run-on and fragmented sentences, regarding compound and complex sentence types.

· It must be typed and double-spaced. Put your name and specific class on the upper left side of the first page.

*Topic Sentence and Outline Due Date: A penalty of 20% off the grade of the paper will be applied if you fail to bring these. An effective T. S. is crucial to a successful paragraph and requires lots of time thinking and rewriting; we will share, revise, and evaluate the Topic Sentence you’ve composed. Make sure you are able to articulate, to the rest of the group, how the T. S. controls and informs the content and its movement in the paragraph (an outline of the paragraph may be very helpful at this stage for your readers).

Definition of Topic Sentence: A topic sentence shows the writer’s attitude or opinion of a subjcet (or “topic”). It can also be called “paragraph main idea” or “central idea.” It is not factual but arguable – meant to be supported and developed by the rest of the paragraph.

What security considerations are involved?

Since I recommend a cloud-based network Verbania would need a cloud-based security software and a security software for their office computers. Cloud-based security offer the same functionalities as you would with any traditional IT security such as protecting your important information from theft, data leakage and deletion. The great aspect of having a cloud-based security is that you will operate at different levels and still be protected.  Another aspect of cloud-based security it allows you attack the threat from different angles verse traditional IT security. With cloud-based security most company have their data center located in different country that have strict laws on how people can gain access to your company data and by having multiply data center in different country you will have a greater chance of protecting your important asset from data leakage and deletion.

Cloud Security

Traditional IT Security

Third-Party Data Centers

In-House Data Centers

Low Upfront Infrastructure Investments

High Upfront Costs

Quickly Utilization

Lower Efficiency

Reduced Time to Market

Longer Time to Market

Usage-Based Cost

Higher Cost

Quick scalable

Slow Scaling

The next security you must worry about is the security on your company computer. I recommend Verbania to go with McAfee Security Suite. The reason I choose the software is that I can protect the company across multiply device that may connect to the company network and do work on it also; if the company allow the employees to connect their personal devices to the network it can install the software to the devices to protect the company from external threats (McAfee, n.d.).

week 5 project due Wednesday Claire adurey

Instructions

Putting It All Together

This assignment has many different steps to it. Be sure to check off each one so you know that you accomplished it. You will be creating a personal résumé in Microsoft Word, revising your PowerPoint presentation from Week 5 Discussion, and then zipping these files along with your Excel spreadsheet that you created for Week 4 Project into a compressed folder to upload to the Week 5 Project submission folder.

Your résumé will be based upon résumés in your field that you found for Week 3 Discussion. You will include your experiences no matter how few they are at this time. Include what information you have now and you can keep adding skills and experiences to your résumé as you complete classes and change jobs. Below are tips and criteria to meet as you create your résumé.

Tip: You learned about tables in Week 2. Tables are great for creating résumés. Most of the time borders are turned off on the tables after the résumé is created although sometimes a top or bottom border is turned on to separate categories.

Part I: The Resume

  • Create your résumé based on the following criteria in Microsoft Word and save it as W5P_Resume_LastName.docx. Remember that the program will automatically add the extension of .docx.
  1. Ensure that the résumé was logically laid out and easily understood
  2. Create categories: create distinct separation and identification of important line-item job skills and experiences using bullets or numbers with appropriate application.
  3. Have content separation: provide a distinguishing feature that separates one line or paragraph from the others.
  4. Modify text: modify default typeface in one line or section and modify the default color or style of a line or section.
  5. Modify text size: modify the default typeface size by changing the points in at least one line on the page
  6. Create an overall professional look to your résumé.
  7. Include a header with your name and include page numbers. In reality, you would only do this if your résumé was more than one page but you are demonstrating your skills in this document.

Part II: The PowerPoint and Zipped Folder

  1. Revise the PowerPoint presentation you created in Week 5 Discussion based on feedback you received in the Week 5 Discussion threads. If no suggestions for improvement were made, try something new on a slide and document that. Make sure that you describe the changes you made in the Notes section of the changed slides. If you had not done so before, compress all graphics.
  2. Create a new folder called W5P_LastName. Put your résumé, your revised PowerPoint file, and your Excel file from Week 4 Project into this folder and “zip” the folder following directions below to upload one file file as your Week 5 Project submission. . This is a handy way to treat multiple files. Once uploaded, be sure to download and unzip your folder to make sure that it contains exactly what you want in it. Sometimes in a rush, students upload empty folders and lose one-fourth of their grade for the class. Don’t let this mistake happen to you!
  3. When you submit your work, add a brief comment as a reflection on your own continuous professional self-development.

* To zip the folder on a PC:

  • Right-click on the main folder (W5P_LastName).
  • From the drop-down menu select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Attach the resulting ZIP file to your response in the classroom.

* To zip the folder on a MAC:

  • Right-click on the main folder (W5P_LastName).
  • From the drop-down menu select Compress.
  • Attach the resulting ZIP file to your response in the classroom.
