In On The Moral and Legal Status of Abortion, author Mary Warren defends abortion on the grounds that fetuses are not persons and therefore have no moral rights. Warren defines personhood, the quality necessary to hold full moral rights, in five characteristics: (1) consciousness and the capacity to feel pain, (2) reasoning (developed problem solving), (3) self-motivated activity (4) the capacity to communicate and (5) the presence of self-concepts, and self-awareness. (Warren 55). Warren then further explains that while a person does not need to hold all, or any specific characteristic of the five, any being that does not hold any of the characteristics is certainly not a person (such as a fetus). While one may agree with Warren that the characteristics defined above may accurately describe a person, the ambiguous and unquantifiable nature of the characteristics may make them impossible to use in a legal sense and therefore irrelevant to the legality of abortion.

The first characteristic, consciousness, is particularly tricky because scientifically there is no test or definition that has been accepted to measure the term. Does an ant, for example have consciousness because it has the capacity to feel pain? Warren even states that “A man or woman whose consciousness has been permanently obliterated but who remains alive is a human being which is no longer a person.” (Warren 56) Yet, would this mean that person who is in a coma is presently not a person because he/she is not conscious? This is a dubious claim and defining how to legislate “consciousness” remains difficult.

None of the characteristics mentioned above are binary conditions, in that one either has the condition or does not but rather exist on a continuum. Reasoning and the ability to communicate for example are characteristics that develop and mature extremely slow in fetuses/humans and there are no specific indicators as to when they are possessed in a manner that Warren would find reliable. Drawing cutoff points for reasoning and communication would inevitably become arbitrary and blurry and defining whether or not a being has a moral right to life on arbitrary standards would be difficult.”

Before connecting to a wireless network there are a number of concerns that must be addressed. They are as follows:

  • Denial of Service is one of the simplest network attacks to perpetrate as it requires limiting access to services (Wilkins, 2011). This can be done by sending a large amount of traffic to the target but in case of wireless networks, something as simple as a microwave or a competing access point on the same channel can cause an interruption.
  • Passive Capturing is performed by getting in range of a target wireless LAN and then eavesdropping and capturing data. This can be used to break the existing security settings and analyzing non-encrypted data.
  • Configuration Problems can be simple enough for attackers to penetrate into. If the security configuration is weak, it opens doors for attackers to gain access to the device and for external use.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is one of the modes of transmission of data over wireless networks. It is one of the specifications for a set of communication protocols that standardize the way wireless devices can be used to access the internet and for instant messaging (Rouse, 2010). There are various layers of WAP:

  • Wireless Application Environment
  • Wireless Session Layer
  • Wireless Transport Layer Security
  • Wireless Transport Layer

Also, there are certain pros and cons associated with the protocol which are as follows:

Pros:

  • Sending and receiving data in real-time.
  • No apprehension of hardware obsolescence.
  • Most modern mobile devices support WAP.
  • Its implementation aligns with the internet model.

Cons:

  • It has low speed, security concerns, and a very small user interface.
  • Most of the people are unfamiliar to WAP.
  • It has an expensive business model.
  • The forms associated with WAP are hard to design.

Students, please view the “Submit a Clickable Rubric Assignment” in the Student Center.
Instructors, training on how to grade is within the Instructor Center.

Assignment 3: “Code of Conduct Memo – Revision”

You are a manager at a call center. The company frowns upon phone calls and texting during work hours. You have looked the other way a few times, but it has started to get out of hand. You need to write a memo reminding everyone that private phone and text message use on company time is viewed as a violation of the company’s code of ethics.

Rewrite your earlier Code of Conduct  (Assignment 1) utilizing the professor’s feedback on organization, format, tone, and editorial issues. Review the example memo in the textbook before submission. In your document, you should:

  1. Ensure the memo is clear and brief.
  2. Choose language to match the purpose and tone for the situation and audience.
  3. Format the memo accurately and according to the details in the textbook.
  4. Create an effective opening that establishes goodwill without obscuring the message.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires use of new Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow SWS or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Illustrate the relationship between how audience characteristics match the context of technical writing.
  • Revise draft documents to improve audience comprehension.
  • Explain ideas in proper format using accurate details and relevant examples.
  • Employ correct Edited Standard Written English (ESWE).
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in technical writing.
  • Write clearly and concisely about technical writing using proper writing mechanics.

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using the following rubric.

english

Assignment:  Create three original, written responses to the prompt; explain your persona, purpose, and audience; justify and explain your rhetorical choices; and critique others’ postings.

Primary Discussion Response

Select a trending topic connected to your field of study or professional field, research the topic online and with academic databases, and write an original tweet, an email, and Facebook post informing others what you have learned/discovered.  You may use your topic that you researched in Unit 1.

Tweet:  in 140 characters, express your thoughts on what you learned in your research; also, please include a hashtag.

Email:  Compose a short email relating to your chosen topic.  The email must include the following fields: a “to:” and “subject:” line and an appropriate “signature”; you should have an introductory greeting, set the context, provide the interesting information including at least one reference to a source, and a concluding statement; the email should not exceed 7 – 10 sentences total.

Facebook:  in a posting to your Facebook followers, craft a summary of your discovery that also expresses your reaction to the information and possible ways your followers might need or use your discovery.

Purpose and Audience:  for each entry, explain the “voice” you’ve adopted (your perspective), your intended audience, and your purpose behind the communication.  Also, discuss how the different platforms affected your purpose, audience, and message.

Justification:  In a brief, 3 – 5 sentence paragraph, explain some of your choices—vocabulary, tone, details and examples, type of research cited—that shape the effect you want to have.

Peer Responses

Respond to 2 classmates. In your responses to your classmates, remember to be constructive and polite when you continue the conversation. Use these questions to assist you with your responses:

  1. What engaged you about your classmate’s tweet, email, or Facebook posts?  What in the writer’s approach interests you?
  2. What about the writer’s style helped or hindered the messages’ appeal to their chosen audience?
  3. Which of the three was most effective and why?
  4. What are your suggestions for the writer?

unit 5 individual project 2

For Unit 5, you will submit a final expository essay that blends the viewpoints from Units 3 and 4.

Specifically, you will bring together the writing techniques that you have learned throughout the course to compose an expository paper. Exposition is a type of discourse that is used to explain, describe, or inform. In an expository essay, the purpose is to give readers a balanced account of a subject with a neutral, objective tone (usually third-person point of view or voice) and offer the opportunity to incorporate a combination of writing techniques.

Your final capstone project will involve integrating both viewpoints of your selected question topic that you worked with in Units 3 and 4. Your expository essay will present both sides of your controversial issue to explain, describe, and inform your audience using an unemotive, neutral, and objective writing style through the use of third-person voice and APA 6th edition format.

For this final assignment, you will complete the following:

  • Step 1: Using the thesis statement, outline, and essay that you developed in Unit 3, revise your content. Be sure to incorporate any instructor feedback and suggestions.
  • Step 2: Based on the instructor feedback that you received from Unit 4 (opposing view draft), revise your content.
  • Step 3: Integrate elements from Steps 1 and 2 to create an expository paper that reflects your knowledge of both perspectives of your topic question. You will write a balanced account of your chosen topic using an unemotive, neutral, and objective writing style (third-person voice). Be sure to include an updated introduction, an updated thesis statement, clear and logical transitions between supporting paragraphs (based on both sides of the topic question), supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
  • Step 4: Your final submission should include the following elements:
    • Title page
    • Abstract
    • Introduction
    • Body
    • Conclusion

Your submission should range between 750 and 1,200 words and contain proper APA formatting in addition to the title and abstract pages. Observe APA formatting for margins, spacing, font style, size, running head, and page numbers. For assistance with APA format, including citations and references, revisit your intellipath nodes on APA, read Chapter 3 of your textbook, and review APA materials provided in the AIU Library and Learning Lab. Visit the APA Web site for detailed free tutorials.

Please note: Citations and references are not required for this assignment. However, if you use quotes or paraphrase ideas that are not your own, be sure to provide in text citations and the aligned references.

This assignment will also be assessed using additional criteria provided here.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

Law of Conservation of Energy

Energy is the ability to do work, or to apply a force through a distance. The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. However, energy can be transformed from one type to another. There are many different types of energy we see every day. The table below reviews some of these.

potential energy  energy stored within an object due to its position or configuration, most commonly energy due to an object’s height from the ground (gravitational potential energy)
kinetic energy  the energy of motion
mechanical energy   the sum of the potential and kinetic energy in a system
lightenergy  the energy of electromagnetic waves, such as visible light and UV light
thermal energy the portion of internal energy responsible for temperature
electrical energy  the energy available to move charges through an electrical circuit
sound energy   energy carried by sound waves in the vibration of particles
chemical energy   energy stored within the bonds of atoms and molecules, also called nuclear energy

When applying this law to a system, the system must be isolated. Otherwise energy could just leave the system and go into another.

Types of Systems

  • Open System – An open system allows mass and energy to travel in and out of the system freely. A cup of ice water is an open system as heat can enter it and warm the drink over time, and more ice cubes could be added later to cool it back down.
  • Closed System – In a closed system mass cannot travel in and out of the system. Energy may or may not travel in and out of the system. The Earth is almost a closed system, as energy enters (from the Sun) but mass seldom enters or leaves the system.
  • Isolated System – An isolated system is the most restrictive. In an isolated system neither energy nor mass can leave the system. Isolated systems rarely, if ever, occur naturally but can be created in a laboratory setting. These are called calorimeters. A Styrofoam coffee cup with a lid tries to be an isolated system by letting out as little heat as possible.

Mechanical Energy
The easiest type of energy to see the conversion of is mechanical energy, which includes the kinetic and potential energy in a substance. Picture a roller coaster. As a roller coaster moves up a hill it is gaining potential energy due to its increasing height from the ground. As it starts down the hill potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy, causing the roller coaster to move faster and faster. Have you ever noticed that the first hill of a roller coaster is always the highest? This is because a roller coaster is an open system, and some energy leaves the system in the form of heat because of friction between the roller coaster’s wheels and the track.

For each of the situations lists describe what type of energy transfer is occurring. For example, a cell phone ringing. The energy transfer is electrical energy to sound energy.
